Massive displacement and over 130 hp: Benelli is building a brutal naked bike around the three-cylinder Tornado Tre. MOTORRAD saw the first drawings and spoke to Benelli boss Andrea Merloni.

Benelli boss Andrea Merloni, 36, on the current situation of the Italian motorcycle brand.
Mr. Merloni, are you satisfied with Benelli? For a start, and that’s where we are, things are not going badly at all. Above all, we have successfully developed our own engine. Sure, not everyone likes our three-cylinder. On the other hand, it doesn’t leave anyone indifferent. There were problems with the first models of the Tornado Tre Biposto, including the MOTORCYCLE test. To be honest, it could have been worse. Some quirks only show up in series production. For example, the high consumption that MOTORRAD complained about. It’s just a question of engine tuning, we’ve changed that. Then there were problems with our slipper clutch, the neutral position was difficult to find. This was done with a kit. Isn’t that angering your customers? I do not think so. The Tornado has not yet been on the market for a year, so we cannot move on the same level as our long-established competitors. However, we solve our problems and don’t leave customers out in the rain. What are you planning for the long term? A complete range of models for our three-cylinder engine. At the end of 2005 the family is to have a new member. I can tell you one thing: It won’t be a custom bike. How many motorcycles do you want to build in 2004? Around 2500 pieces, 1000 more than in 2003. When do you expect black numbers? If everything works out ?? next year.
