Unusual: An Italian manufacturer of all people does not use Brembo brakes. But the retarders from Nissin are extremely easy to dose.

Fresh enduro material from Florence

The beta sport enduros won’t let the top dogs KTM and Husqvarna get them down. Driving report of the 2017 models.

The question could be useful for a trivial pursuit: What do ex-Chancellor Gerhard Schroder and Beta owner Lapo Bianchi have in common? Answer: the policy of the steady hand. While Schroder directed German politics, Bianchi has been carefully guiding model development in his Italian family business for decades. The success proves the grandson of the company founder right. The mark B.eta enjoys trust, the sales figures are increasing continuously.

Singles shine with excellent controllability

For example, the decidedly smooth running of the engine at low speeds. Across all classes, the singles shine with excellent controllability and play this trump card above all on tricky terrain. On typical enduro single trails, the stews offer plenty of traction uphill. The engines equipped with an injection system from the French supplier Synerject are just as well trained when going downhill.

In push mode, a stepper motor opens the throttle valve slightly, thus noticeably reducing the drag torque (motor brake). While the 350 fuel rate works cautiously, the 390 and 430 fuel rate should become the first choice for the majority of pilots. The more powerful acceleration helps to relieve the front with a throttle or to catapult the bike more vehemently out of the neighboring areas. The Beta RR 390 is smoother, while the slightly rougher Beta RR 430 is a bit more powerful. The Beta RR 480 is probably only needed by ambitious people in the largest displacement class of traditional enduro competitions (E3).

In terms of price, everything stays the same

Especially since the chassis takes up the smooth character of the engines. The Sachs spring elements act comfortably. If this design does not have enough reserves for use on the motocross track – the training area for most off-road pilots – the betas flourish on species-appropriate terrain.

The fork sensitively sniffs out the smallest of edges and, together with the somewhat harder monoshock, makes the ride through the undergrowth the Italian’s favorite discipline. But the new Beta four-stroke engines are not only true to their character. In terms of price, everything stays the same, so they are around 600 euros below the competition from Austria.

Interview with Frank Schroder

beta

Frank Schroder: “After all, we sell 3,000 vehicles in Germany”.

Frank Schroder, 58, has been international sales manager at the Beta plant near Florence for 18 years.

MOTORCYCLE: First a personal question: How do you become a German sales manager at an Italian family business??

Frank Schroder: By being associated with the brand long enough. I was, by the way, also in the family business, as an importer for Beta in Germany since 1984.

MOTORCYCLE: And are you satisfied with the development?

Frank Schroder: Yes, you can say that. We have a nice success curve. We sold around 13,000 vehicles in 2014, then 15,000 units in 2015, and this season we should break the 18,000 mark.

MOTORCYCLE: How big is the proportion of sports enduro bikes?

Frank Schroder: Almost 50 percent. We build a total of around 8,500 sport enduros and around 3,000 trial machines. Our hiking trial Alp and approved 125cc and 50cc mopeds add up to around 6500 units.

MOTORCYCLE: How important is the German motorcycle market for Beta?

Frank Schroder: Very important. Germany is just behind France and Italy. We will sell 3000 vehicles in Germany this year.

MOTORCYCLE: From January 1st, 2017, new machines must meet the Euro 4 standard. KTM states that the limit values for the two-stroke models with carburettors cannot be observed. Will also have to switch Beta to injection?

Frank Schroder: I can only speak for beta. At the moment we are still passing the approval hurdle with carburetor technology. But there is no doubt that electronically injected mixture preparation is the future in the medium term. Euro 5 (note: from 1.1. 2020) is also comparatively close.
