Beta sports enduro in the test compact
Happy Birthday Florentine women!
Congratulations: Beta is celebrating its entry into the sports enduro market – for the tenth time. The prices of all models (two-stroke from € 7,779, four-stroke from € 8,879) remain unchanged compared to this year.
D.he birthday surprise was canceled. It would not have suited the down-to-earth family business from Tuscany at all. It’s been ten years since the trial machine specialist ventured into the highly competitive sports enduro segment. Initially with built-in engines from KTM, from 2010 with in-house engines. And above all: with success. A total of 3000 machines sold per year bring the sports enduro range in the company’s internal race on par with the trial model range (see also interview).
And because a completely new two-stroke engine rounded off the frontal attack in the current model year, the men from near Florence were allowed to breathe deeply for the 2014 vintage. Only a little fine tuning spices up the red and white bikes for the coming season. But that doesn’t change their basic orientation. In other words: With a fine response behavior and still comfortable coordination of the Sachs spring elements, the Florentine women can be beaten over inhospitable terrain in a very good condition and with a lot of traction.
Matching it: the engines. With an emphatically gentle response, the four-stroke singles plow their way unspectacularly but efficiently through the rough. Whether the reason for meekness lies between the air filter and intake valves? As one of the few manufacturers, Beta still relies on the legendary Keihin flat slide carburetor instead of an injection for all engines. Anyway. While the easily manageable smaller displacement versions (350/400 cm³) make life easy for hobby pilots in particular, the displacement upper class (450/498 cm³) offers the ideal compromise, especially for experts. The combination of easily controllable acceleration, excellent running culture and sufficient power will inspire even professionals. The beta accounting calculators too. The prices of all models (two-stroke from € 7,779, four-stroke from € 8,879) remain unchanged compared to this year. Maybe a birthday surprise after all.
That is new
All types: Fork gets harder compression damping; The shock absorber has a harder spring (5.4 kg / mm instead of 5.2 kg / mm) and stiffer rebound damping; Reinforced frame; Front fender more stable; Two-tone bench
All four-stroke models (Beta RR 4T 350/400/450/498):
- Revised balance shaft
- Switching mechanism changed in favor of softer actuation
All two-stroke models (Beta RR 2T 250/300):
- Control screw for engine oil level
- Sealing of the exhaust control improved

Frank Schroder
Beta export manager Frank Schroder (54) on the development of the off-road machine manufacturer from Tuscany.
MOTORCYCLE: How do you become a German export manager in an Italian family business??
Schroder: I imported beta motorcycles to Germany for 19 years. When the Italians took over international sales themselves in 2003, the owners, the Bianchi family, offered me the position of global export manager. Since then I have been working at the plant near Florence.
MOTORCYCLE: Beta was considered a specialist for trialers. The expansion of the model range to include sport enduros has borne fruit?
Schroder: Clearly: yes. In terms of numbers, the enduros have caught up with the trialers. We sell 3000 machines per year from both lines. There are also 3,000 soft enduros and mopeds each.
MOTORCYCLE: Is this number of units profitable?
Schroder: Yes. We also focus on growth. A third of 120 employees work in the development department.
MOTORCYCLE: And also design their own engines there. This is not common for companies of this size.
Schroder: That may be, that’s why we’re proud of it. The entire range of models comes from our pen and corresponds to our quality standards.
MOTORCYCLE: This is – with all due respect – a weak sales argument for an Italian manufacturer.
Schroder: We apply Northern European standards. Our trialers have been among the best in quality in the industry for decades, and so do the enduros. Internet forums confirm this.
MOTORCYCLE: And where is the further development going at Beta? Towards the street?
Schroder: No, we still see enough potential in the off-road segment.
