For exactly 30 years, Kawasaki has been delighting us with ninjas, the purebred super athletes of the Japanese. Two ninja superbikes came to TunerGP with the BikeShop Luchow-Kawasaki ZX-10R and the BDS-Kawasaki ZX-10R and showed how much the ZX-10R can do.

So we were really looking forward to the BikeShop Luchow-Kawasaki ZX-10R and the BDS-Kawasaki ZX-10R, and even more because both forges wanted to show us in their own way that the Kawasaki is a green force – without always having to be green. Karsten Bartschat from Luchow always relies on solid tuning with high stability for ambitious hobby racers at an absolutely understandable price for his bikes.
The long-time TunerGP participant has therefore repeatedly left the engine untouched and mainly taken care of the chassis and a little power increase through selected parts on the periphery. In principle, he also did that at the BikeShop Luchow-Kawasaki ZX-10R, for example with the World Cup model of the LeoVince exhaust system, a racing oil filter from BMC, the larger racing cooler and a few other little things like the Samco hoses for even better ones Heat dissipation. But nothing more, the engine remained completely standard.
The big trick comes from the production control unit
This time Bartschat intervened courageously in the electronics of the ZX-10R, because the Bazzaz expert deals intensively with the subject of series control units and reprogramming, also works here with the expert Stefan Briege (see PS 6/2014) and did a lot his Kawasaki ECU upside down. For example, the ABS can simply be switched off, which the series cannot, and if the ABS is working, it regulates much later, so that it also makes sense on the racetrack.
The most important thing for the performance of the BikeShop Luchow-Kawasaki ZX-10R is of course the factory-programmed throttling. She was “thrown out”. The fuel cut, i.e. the electronic stalling of the spray supply to take the foam off the mouth of country road drivers when accelerating, makes no sense in a hot racing motorcycle and has been eliminated. All of this, coupled with a crisper gear ratio, provided a huge boost across the entire rev range. The motorcycle accepts the throttle perfectly and increases its power one to one with every millimeter of the throttle grip – as briskly as it should be for a superbike.

The plan worked
The second big change concerned the chassis, which ultimately brought the BikeShop Luchow-Kawasaki ZX-10R the in-house designation ZX1 Factory, because the Luchow fork is identical to the Aprilia RSV4 Factory fork. Bartschat only adapted the set-up to the motorcycle. At the rear, the electronic EEC shock absorber, also from Ohlins, has a special setup. Together with the changed geometry, this combination gave the Kawa a very good compromise between high agility for clean line selection and playful turning as well as very good braking stability.
Maybe the setup turned out a little too hard, but in terms of feedback, the bike in Hockenheim was beyond any doubt and controllability was an absolute pleasure despite or with this power. In conclusion, it can be said that Bartschat’s plan worked again: he saves thick pants for drivability, stability and price are closely linked. “With the BikeShop Luchow-Kawasaki ZX-10R, the hobby racer has a real race bike and the professional simply has a lot of fun,” says Pascal Eckhardt, summarizing the ZX1 Factory.

Everything that was used stands for first-class racing and is correspondingly expensive, which alone underlines the Suter racing clutch (approx. 2000 euros).
The engine is made according to all the rules of the art. From the reinforced and balanced connecting rod to the finely balanced crankshaft, nothing is standard anymore, even the bearings are polished. The camshafts come from Kawasaki Racing, the injection is done by a Kawa ECU from the Superstock EM. The guys worked so hard that they ran out of time and Lothar Kraus (www.kraus-racing.de), who looked after Kevin Wahr in the Supersport World Cup and was involved in the BDS project, no longer finished the motorcycle got matched. This explains the performance deficit of the BDS-Kawasaki ZX-10R. The burner now pushes well over 200 hp.
Pure enthusiasm
The fact that we were still impressed by the BDS-Kawasaki ZX-10R shows what a great motorcycle has been made. TunerGP tester Rene Raub, who set the fastest times in the team with the PS long-distance Kawasaki 2011 in Le Mans, immediately raved about the silky and low-vibration running of the four-cylinder. A quantum leap to the long-distance machine back then. Without any load changes, the engine hung very directly, but finely dosed on the gas. Here, too, every little twist could noticeably be transformed into performance. You can’t even imagine how brutally this unit now pulls at full power. At the push of a button, different mappings can be called up and the ABS can also be switched off. The dosage of the traction control also works via the colorful buttons that we know from the GP and SBK-WM. The transmission was beyond any doubt. The gear changes with the automatic gearshift slipped through the butter like the famous hot knife. The frictional connection was barely interrupted, the gear changes were done with a gentle tap.
Another piece of cake is the chassis of the BDS-Kawasaki ZX-10R. Lothar Kraus is an expert in this and with the reigning IDM Supersport champion True, the guys had a clever set-up driver with them. The modified TTX36 shock absorber and the FGR 800 TTX20 gas pressure racing fork from Ohlins are not as hard as a rock, but rather sensitively. Nothing pumped in the parabolic steroids, and the pilot could ruthlessly and fearlessly squeeze the kawa to the extreme.

The crowning glory of the TunerGP
The chassis, which has also been clearly modified in terms of geometry, also shone on the formidable brakes. Compressed to the maximum, the BDS-Kawasaki ZX-10R could be effortlessly turned on the brakes at the end of the Parabolika and maneuvered around the nasty hairpin. “Like a fine-wired sprinter,” tester Rene Raub finally characterized the bike and more than once expressed the wish to have reeled off the 24 Hours of Le Mans with this machine.
The BDS-Kawasaki ZX-10R and the BikeShop Luchow-Kawasaki ZX-10R were worth it and were the super sporty crowning achievement of the TunerGP. And they underlined why the ZX-10R is finding more and more friends – it doesn’t always have to be Bavarian.
