Insights into the big boxer for the cruiser

Content of

BMW is building a new, large boxer engine for its upcoming cruiser models. Now there are first insights into the two-cylinder with 1.8 liter displacement.

I.In the previous prototypes, the so-called Big Boxer ran under the R18 label, suggesting 1.8 liters of displacement. Now Bayern are pushing hard facts and figures for the new boxer engine.

91 hp and 158 Nm torque

With an OHV valve train and separate engine and gearbox housing, the new “Big Boxer” also has the design features that characterized the first BMW boxer engine, which at that time still had side-controlled valves. The two-cylinder boxer engine with the largest displacement ever used in motorcycle series production has a displacement of 1,802 cm³, resulting from a 107.1 mm bore and 100 mm stroke. The engine output is 91 hp at 4,750 rpm. The Bavarians give the maximum torque with 158 Nm already at 3,000 rpm. It should always be more than 150 Nm available from 2,000 to 4,000 tours. A lush flywheel should ensure smooth running. The new boxer can do a maximum of 5,750 tours, the idle heart rate is 950 / min.

The cooling concept is based on air / oil cooling. In addition, the boxer, including the transmission and intake system, has large ribs and cylinders and cylinder heads, weighing 110.8 kg. The vertically divided motor housing is made of aluminum.

BMW

In contrast to the classic air-cooled two-valve boxer engines from BMW, the crankshaft of the “Big Boxer” forged from tempered steel has an additional main bearing in the middle, which was necessary due to the enormous cylinder volume in order to prevent undesirable bending vibrations of the crankshaft.

Like the crankshaft, the two connecting rods with I-shafts have sliding bearings and are also forged from heat-treated steel. They accommodate pistons cast from aluminum with two compression rings and an oil control ring. The running surface of the light metal cylinder is provided with a NiCaSil coating. The supply of lubricating and cooling oil is provided by wet sump lubrication with a two-stage oil pump driven by the crankshaft via a sleeve chain. Other features include four-valve technology, injection and dual ignition.

Valve control with push rods

The valve control of the Big Boxer relies on two camshafts arranged on the left and right above the crankshaft. Two push rods guided on the top of each cylinder operate the valves via fork rocker arms. The valve clearance is set in the classic way using adjusting screws. The steel-made valves have a plate diameter of 41.2 mm on the inlet side and 35 mm on the outlet side. The valve angle is 21 degrees on the inlet side and 24 degrees on the outlet side. The valve clearance is given as 0.2 – 0.3 mm.

A single-disc dry anti-hopping clutch with power assistance ensures the power connection to the six-speed gearbox. A reverse gear is available as an option. This is driven by a back gear and an electric motor and can be switched manually.

That is what the competition offers

With the new boxer, BMW competes directly against competitors such as Harley-Davidson and Indian. Harley uses air-cooled V2 engines with displacement levels of 1,745 cm³, 1,868 cm³ and 1,923 cm³ for its models. Here the performance values are between 84 and 106 hp. The range for the maximum torque is specified with 145 to 171 Nm. The air-cooled V2 at Indian comes to 87 hp and 150 Nm from 1,811 cc.
