With the R 1200 GS BMW has not only the most sold motorcycle of Germany, but also an excellent travel enduro in the program. For real rail center, the GS is not suitable: too heavy and too unwieldy, the freaks say. That’s the HP2 now.

Driving report from the travel enduro

KOnView all: frame and fork
It is a 195 kiled enduro with the 1200er boxer from the GS, which is similar from the layout to the desert machines of the Marathon Rally WM (a run is the Dakar Rally). That means: steel grille frame instead of carrying motor and conventional suspension fork instead of the characteristic front telelever suspension.
Air suspension for rear
The rear Paralever swing arm has remained, but a new feature is a spring damper system that works exclusively with air. BMW developed it together with Continental Automotive Systems. According to the manufacturer, in addition to a weight saving of two kilograms, it offers a whole bundle of advantages: Both the spring and damper rates adapt to high loads “more naturally”. This also applies to loading and increases puncture resistance. In addition, the seat height can be adjusted comparatively easily.
Engine without balance shaft
The two-cylinder boxer engine from the R 1200 GS now delivers 105 hp instead of 98 thanks to modified engine management. The maximum torque remains unchanged at 115 Nm. Bayern rationalized away the balancer shaft.
The HP2 should be able to handle jerk-free slow driving without clutch support – particularly important in difficult passages or on deep soil. Helpful according to BMW: the principle-related high running culture of the boxer and its soft but lush power development from the "low revs". In addition, the HP2 also has the so-called torque-based engine management with the automatic idle control from the GS.
Whole family of sport bikes
Incidentally, “HP” is the abbreviation for “High Performance”. The "2" in the model designation indicates the two-cylinder boxer engine. The HP2 is the "first representative of a new motorcycle category from BMW". The Munich-based company wants to concentrate primarily on the boxer models. They want to develop these special motorcycles in small teams beyond the usual structures for larger series. High-performance motorcycles from BMW should therefore remain comparatively rare. This is also reflected in the price. While the R 1200 GS hasn’t broken the 12,000-euro barrier yet, the "HP" should have trouble staying under 16,000 euros.
