From the cuddly cabin scooter to the assembled boxer clique to the four-cylinder cruise ship. There are all kinds of characters in the BMW motorcycle family.
At the beginning of the 1980s, things did not look particularly rosy for BMW Motorrad GmbH. With the comparatively historical-looking two-valve boxers, the Japanese, expanding in all directions, with their exuberant model programs, including dizzyingly fast model changes, were difficult to deal with. Exception: the G / S models. They established the big enduro class on the market and sharpened the profile of the white-blue with glorious rally victories.
In 1983, just in time for the 60th BMW motorcycle birthday, the Munich-based company presented something completely new for them with the four-cylinder K series and at the same time made a clear commitment to motorcycle. Another ten years later, the R 1100 RS, the four-valve boxer with Paralever chassis, appeared.
At that time, BMW Motorrad GmbH had 1200 employees, 900 of them in production. Today, 2,600 employees from the entire motorcycle division work at the Berlin-Spandau plant. Since the F 650 GS, unlike its predecessor, no longer rolls off the assembly line at Aprilia in Italy, the entire model range now comes from the capital. Only the C1 scooters are still being built across the Alps at Bertone. Nevertheless, this niche product, actually a development by the car subsidiary M-GmbH, remains true to a BMW principle: injection and G-Kat for everyone, anti-lock braking system at least as an option ?? that use up to 95 percent of customers.
Since the first use of ABS in 1988, the Munich-based company – in contrast to most of the competition? their anti-lock device continues. Today, BMW does not install a universal ABS, but offers three variants from the light, inexpensive, digitally regulating system of the single-cylinder models including C1 to the analog ABS II in the R 850 R and R 1150 GS to the third ABS generation in the other models . This system, called Integral ABS, comes up with an electric-hydraulic brake booster? unique in the world of two-wheelers. The stable Telelever front with its almost complete brake buckling compensation provides assistance with harsh stops.
Keyword Telelever: In addition to the 100% availability of G-Kat and ABS, the chassis technology of the R and K series is a specialty. Even if the modular principle is only rudimentary. Even after the 2001 facelift, the R 1150 RS carries the first Telelever variant, the handlebars of which, in contrast to the siblings with tilt decoupling, swivels with the fork bridge around the ball joint of the upper tele-adjustment when the forehand springs. With the Roadster R 1150 R, such dumping is not an issue, it is also equipped with a weight-reduced A-handlebar on the Telelever. The aluminum frame of the R 1100 S is less about weight than about stability, which gives the sports boxer the necessary backbone. The two four-cylinder K 1200 RS and LT come with an aluminum bridge frame. While their four-cylinder engines turned out to be conventional except for the horizontal installation, the valve control of the boxer in particular seems exotic: First, a countershaft operating at half the crankshaft speed drives the two camshafts located halfway up the cylinder via a chain. These in turn control the four valves via two short bumpers and fork rocker arms.
Since a conventional DOHC system would require more space and thus more overall width, the subject of valve control remains acute for future boxers. Like the main shaft. It has a long tradition at BMW, for example racing legend Schorsch Meier won the European Championship in 1938 with a vertical shaft boxer and a year later the Senior TT on the Isle of Man. Even today, the appearance of an RS 500 from 1954 ensures moist eyes and massaged ear canals, as Ralf Schneider and Co. know from page XXX.
Some time ago, MOTORRAD (issue 7/2001) outlined what a modern sports boxer for the street could look like. Regardless of whether the cam is driven directly via the vertical shaft or via a rocker arm or intermediate shaft, a slim, powerful boxer would be ?? the hit, with a flanged Roots compressor you would follow in Schorsch Meier’s footsteps and at a direct striking distance from the potent competition.
W.he knows that according to the BMW era, a new generation of engines would be due in 2003. Perhaps the Bavarians will surprise the motorcycle department with a real high-tech boxer just in time for the 80th birthday. Or a transversely installed inline four-cylinder. We’ll see.
C1 200 Family’s Friend
Telelever fork, injection, G-Kat, ABS option, windshield wipers with wipe-wash function: When it comes to equipment, the BMW employees know no mercy, even with scooters. However, the construction-related treetop center of gravity including the blaring 176 cm3 four-stroke single, to make matters worse, the variator at full throttle is always kept in the performance-ready range of 7000 tours, initially not for everyone. But after a bit of getting used to it, it is quite attractive, strapped crosswise to the seat and protected by the security cell, to whiz around the corner in the roofed city mobile. BMW F 650 CS
In order to cheat the bogeyman of an increasingly aging biker community, the Munich-based company created the candy-colored toy mobile called Scarver based on the F 650 GS. With a thoroughly practice-oriented attitude. The newly designed bridge frame functions as an oil tank and, together with the fuel bunker in the rear, makes space for a large storage compartment above the airbox. In this tub, dubbed “StuffBay”, everything from a small tank bag to a fat audio system can dock. The transparent plastic railing ensures a firm hold. ABS and variable pockets for pillion seat and luggage rack are available for an extra charge. Single-sided swing arm with toothed belt drive is standard, just like the injection-fed, G-Kat-cleaned single that pushes the CS quickly and in a sophisticated manner. The soft, non-adjustable spring elements stand in the way of all too committed hustle and bustle on the handy Scarver. Larger reserves would be desirable, especially for pillion riders.
BMW R 850 R.
600 euros separate the R 850 R from the 1150. Pecuniary considered. Technically and especially visually, the distance between the siblings is clearer. However, as long as the government business promises profit with the small roadster, the cozy Nackedei will appear for a while in the tried and tested guise. Privatiers is that? Free of charge – classic black painted special model with cross-spoke wheels and chrome-plated cylinder head covers. Incidentally, the boxer Benjamin brings very solid arguments into the field, such as the smoother engine running and greater revving. He received a minus because of his unpleasant load change reactions. In addition, for a surcharge of 910 euros, the 850 R can only be equipped with ABS II instead of the current, brake-assisted Integral ABS with Evo brake. After all, BMW offers the small R as the only boxer optionally in a 34 PS variant? also free of charge.
BMW R 1150 R.
Roadster ?? pure driving machines with no frills. Think, the R masters the entire white-blue repertoire from (partially integral) ABS to accessories. Even the base is impressive: the focus is on the 1130 cm3 boxer with six-speed transmission, the last gear of which can be ordered either as a short gear or overdrive. Highway freaks should take the short sixth. It ensures a crisp connection, while the long-translated alternative can noticeably starve the boxer in StVO mode. Normally, the four-valve engine delivers sustained power and torque between 2500 and 6000 rpm without annoying you with harsh vibrations and load changes. Corresponding to this, the five quintal weight R can be circumnavigated surprisingly easily and neutrally over land. Even longer trips including a pillion passenger promise maximum pleasure. Helpful: the optional Speedster screen, which keeps the pilot away from the worst storm.
BMW R 1100 S.
Followers of the pure super sports theory brand the sporting boxer: too big, too heavy, too little top performance. But be careful, apart from the heated regulars’ table conventions, »S« causes astonishment. With stoic calm she passes even badly prepared country roads and alpine passes, even with passengers, and makes life difficult for even more well-trained competitors. Gentle, controllable power development, underpinned with plenty of torque, as well as the unshakable Telelever front create good conditions for unrestricted curve fun on any route. Unfortunately, sustained speeds of over 6000 rpm cause numb hands due to the penetrating vibrations of the most powerful boxer. If you like, you can buy a real safety plus with the partially integral brake system including ABS for an extra charge of 1040 euros, the more tightly tuned sports suspension with shorter spring travel and crisp damping costs 260 euros.
BMW R 1150 RS
The four-valve boxer made its debut in the RS ten years ago, and the latter received a facelift in 2001. Although the Munich team lend a hand at every nook and cranny, the RS remains the veteran in the boxer round. The flexible handlebar, which is not decoupled from tipping, honors the first generation of the Telelever chassis. After all, the rubber blocks of this mounting protect the driver’s hands from the ever-present engine vibrations that let off steam on the fairing. On the other hand, the good seating comfort on the bench, which is height-adjustable in three stages, excellent wind protection behind the adjustable window and the easy-to-swallow spring elements are forgiving. Held on a long leash, the RS glides neutrally, directionally and undeterred over streets of all stripes, only short, hard heels are passed directly to the passengers. Incidentally, with the 23 liter tank capacity, up to 500 kilometers are possible in one go.
BMW R 1150 RT
Some of them know it anyway, let’s say to the rest: Despite the mobile home-like appearance, there are a lot of dynamic talents slumbering in touring boxers. A driving-active, driver-friendly seating position, the 1150 drivetrain implanted in the course of last year’s model update and the likewise optimized handling conjure a smile on the pilot’s face, regardless of whether it is around the corner to get a cigarette or halfway around the world. Practical: Thanks to the great wind protection, butts glow longer and you can even get high fideles on your ears for cash. Braking is standard with fully integral ABS, i.e. foot and hand brake levers act on both brake circuits. Since inexperienced foot brakes were often frightened by the hard-to-dose, violently pulling stoppers, the Munich-based company has now somewhat defused the story. Not defused: full equipment with fog lights, suitcases and electrically adjustable windows.
BMW R 1200 C avant-garde
Whether as a generously chrome-laden standard model, graphite-colored “Avantgarde” or two-tone, single-seat show talent “Independent”: the Bavarian cruiser family knows how to make a highly independent appearance. In other words, the exclusive frame layout, the extra-long mono swing arm of the otherwise usual Paralever linkage and the specially prepared engine. So that the torque surges violently even at low engine speeds, the boxer can draw from 1170 cm3 with an increased stroke and leave it at 61 hp peak power. Between 2000 and 5000 tours, cruisers can glide at around 100 Newton meters of torque. Put in fifth gear and you’re done. That’s a good thing, because the C only develops its chassis qualities when the vehicle is moving smoothly. On the other hand, the truck reacts to jittery acceleration with clear cardan and load change reactions. But who gets jittery on a cruiser??
BMW K 1200 RS
Since last year, the comfort handlebar, which was previously traded as an accessory, has been a series, which perfectly underlines the essence of the fastest and most powerful BMW. Namely, to bridge distances of all kinds virtually weightlessly. With the 2001 facelift, there was even more wind protection and part-integral ABS as standard. The full range of ergonomics with adjustable seat, handlebar width, windscreen and footrest position was already on board. Rubber mounts decouple the vibrating four-cylinder from the aluminum bridge frame so that the torque potential can be used smoothly. Exploring the winding streets is not quite as smooth. When fully equipped, the weight approaches the 300 kilo mark, rather suboptimal for jagged cornering. Long, fast curves taste better for the Gran Turismo, here it majestically pulls its course, largely decoupled from the rigors of the road surface.
BMW K 1200 LT
“I would never have believed that you can drive so fast with the BMW” marveled racing driver Markus Barth after comparing the MOTORRAD touring bikes over 5000 kilometers across Europe. Sure, the almost eight hundred-pound heavy LT cannot and will not be a planer for driving dizzy. But despite the luxurious equipment with stereo sound, reverse gear, 120 liters of storage space, electrically adjustable window and fully integral ABS, it is definitely dynamic, whether solo or in pairs. On the autobahn, there is only a gentle breeze behind the monumental plastic cladding, and the Trumm passes even tight bends precisely. Extras such as seat heating, cruise control, CD changer and satellite navigation degrade the passing landscape now and then to an extra. In contrast to the passenger, who can direct the music program from the stern while cuddling up against the heated backrest.
BMW F 650 GS
At least a third of the small GS are in female hands. Which is probably not only due to its compact shape, the low seat height and the smart, independent look. Rather, their package – single injected, G-Kat cleaned, ABS option and extensive accessories – is unique in the 50 hp class. Initial teething problems, which also afflicted the MOTORRAD endurance test copy, are now considered to have been cured. And after it was dismantled, the four-valve single-cylinder manufactured by Rotax was in exemplary condition. Not a matter of course after 50,000 exhausting kilometers, on which the all-rounder gained sympathy with easy handling, powerful engine and astonishing pillion suitability. For fans of hearty off-road excursions, there’s the Dakar version with longer suspension travel and a 21-inch front wheel.
BMW R 1150 GS
It is not only the best-selling motorcycle in Germany and subscription test winner, but something like the original meter of travel enduro bikes. Even if the competition is getting closer and closer to the platypus, which is used to success, it has never really been able to bag one. The chassis, which is stable under all circumstances and yet handy, the boxer gripping gnarly even at moderate engine speeds, and the ergonomic ergonomics prove to be a difficult fortress to take? no matter whether on asphalt or gravel. An experienced pilot can even elicit real terrain qualities from the mighty trump; among less talented people it is enough for hearty milling work. Usually, however, the GS predominantly populates asphaltic slopes, on which, despite its unfavorable power-to-weight ratio, it is not only fun, but also really fast. Even packed up to the roof, the Munich cowgirl does not show any nakedness.

So BMW design chief David Robb. Responsible for the white-blue motorcycle design since 1993, he gave his signature to all the models that are currently in the BMW showrooms. In addition to the consistent family resemblance, the »corporate identity«, which includes accessories and clothing in addition to the motorcycles themselves, each model nevertheless speaks its own design language. Examples: those made of transparent ?? Elements of the F 650 CS made of »translucent« plastic, here the luggage rack (1) bathed in glowing red by the rear light. Depending on the model, the Cruiser line includes the independently drawn speedometer (2), smooth metallic ignition key, chrome-plated tank hood and pull lever for the rear seat / backrest lock (5). The rainbow-like manifolds (4) are almost a design element of the BMW boxer. Viewed from below: tunnel on the boxer cylinder (6). The heat shield on the Scarver frame (7) filled with engine oil is positioned in front of the pilot’s legs to protect it. Classic: analogue clock and an almost undesigned indicator light set on the instrument panel of the R 1150 R (8). Opulent flowing lines dominate the shapes of the four-cylinder touring sports car K 1200 RS, for example on the ventilation grille and the recess for topping up engine oil in the side panel (9).
