The Yamaha MT-09 Tracer is something like the rational version of the triple. The ones with the highest utility value. Height-adjustable windshield, on-board socket, extensive cockpit, plenty of space for driver and pillion: Well-being is already anchored in the vehicle’s genes. When it comes to a variety of models when using one engine, a small Italian manufacturer can do even more.

We’re talking about MV Agusta. In Varese they seem to knit countless variations around the 800s. The most recent example is that MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800. It not only wants to set new standards for the Italian three-cylinder bikes when it comes to the look with bewitchingly beautiful lines and fine workmanship, but also when it comes to everyday practicality. So utility plus elegant design.

MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800 systems are very promising

A direct comparison with the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer shows whether this works. The systems of the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800 are not bad. A large tank in combination with a consumption of less than five liters ensures a long range. More than 400 possible kilometers in a row are a word. In addition ABS, a multiple adjustable traction control, 15,000 inspection intervals, automatic gearshift with blipper function for clutch-free upshifts and downshifts, a two-way height-adjustable disc, a total of three on-board sockets (one double USB in the cockpit, two as a power connection) and long spring travel for Comfortable gliding over patches of all kinds at the front and back.

All of this shows that at MV, they carefully looked into the specifications of tourists with a passion for sport. With just one on-board socket, simpler suspension elements, shorter maintenance intervals and a more simply designed traction control, the Tracer is more spartan, even if it even undercuts the MV in terms of fuel consumption. One to zero for the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800. Until the first seat test.

With the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer, arms and feet find their fixed points by themselves. The wide handlebars lie comfortably in the hand, the knee angle is relaxed and casual. The knees don’t hit the tank or any plastic panels. Everyone feels good, from 170-centimeter dwarfs to two-meter giants. In Italy they probably didn’t think of second when interpreting the seating. Although the knee angle is bearable on the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800, the driver sits much closer to the handlebars. In addition, legs and tank bulges don’t always want to come together. For longer contemporaries, there is a noticeable problem in this area. Help is provided by sliding all the way back on the short driver’s cushion. After all, things are not as close as on the even more radical MV sister Stradale.

The photographer is waiting, the curves are calling

And somehow in the end everyone can somehow come to terms with the sitting posture. The photographer is waiting, the curves are calling. Even on the first bends, the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800 reveals a very special talent: its handiness. Almost without effort, it falls into an inclined position. In comparison, the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer needs a clearer impulse to change direction. Your strength when dancing through curves of all kinds is revealed in the further course of the radius you have just taken under the wheels: stability. As if by itself, the Yamaha follows the chosen line, hits the apex, flies confidently around the corner.

With the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800, spontaneous maneuverability turns into nervousness. Even the tiniest tug on the handlebars is enough to stray from the perfect line. Not bad, but you notice. In tight turns it helps enormously to push the Turismo Veloce into the curve like an enduro. So grabbed by the handlebars, she drives more harmoniously through the tight left-right worm. However, it does not reach the level of the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer.

Yamaha MT-09 Tracer better at wheelbase

It actually has the more radical chassis data, combining steeper steering head angles with shorter caster. Only in terms of the wheelbase does the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer beat the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800. And its suspension travel is shorter. Overall, the tracer is more stable, but could definitely offer more comfort. The fork and shock absorber do not respond very sensitively, they score more with reserves than with sensitive damping behavior. This is particularly noticeable at the back.

As a tip: fully relax the spring at the back and open the rebound stage one turn. Then the comfort improves noticeably without any loss of stability. The MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800 is not familiar with such little bitches. It carries 160 millimeters of spring travel around the front and back – and that is what we use. The Popometer is particularly pleased. The sensitive roadway seismograph only registers little shocking that reaches it. At a brisk pace, however, the comfort-oriented set-up allows too much movement. It is therefore advisable to at least adjust the spring base at the rear of the Turismo Veloce. There is more stability with almost the same level of comfort when exactly three rings can be seen on the practical handwheel.

The swing factor at the MV is higher

All the turning on the spring elements, which are fully adjustable on the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800, does not change the basic characteristics of the chassis. This can be seen when the motorway has to serve as a connecting road between two photo stops. The Yamaha MT-09 Tracer whizzes over the cross-jointed track at just over 200 km / h with only slight restlessness. At a higher speed it would get more fidgety. Yamaha is putting a stop to this by limiting gears five and six. The swing factor is higher with the MV. Even when loading the gears using the automatic gearshift on the driveway, she nodded her front every time the gear changed. She retains this nervous touch at high speeds behind the adequately protective window. But we didn’t want to race at all. Therefore, no more high-speed brawling now. On the next descent, the two can show what their brake anchors can do.

The tracer converts kinetic energy into heat with good effect. The MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800 does the same procedure a little better. Thanks to high-quality components, braking point landings are even more accurate with it. This also applies to decelerating at the limit. The ABS controls finely, the hand lever only pulsates slightly. The wheels stay neatly on track. Until a second person climbs up or it goes steeply downhill. Those who now fully grasp the iron will quickly balance on the front tire. In the last few meters of the deceleration, the rear wheel shoots up in a flash. If the driver does not readjust manually, a somersault follows without prior notice. The Yamaha MT-09 Tracer is more reserved. Your ABS works with coarser intervals, but much more reliably. Even with a pillion passenger, there is no stoppage. That creates trust.

Tracer with three different driving modes

This should also strengthen the different driving modes. With the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer there are three: A, B and standard. The latter is stored at every start. The Tracer-Triple develops a little less power in B-mode, which shines with the smoothest response. A and standard modes act rougher. All three variants can be easily selected using the switch on the right end of the handlebar.

The MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800 offers even more modes – including individual configuration. It always accelerates without strong load change reactions, but responds quickly to spontaneous opening of the throttle valve. The sporty motor donors Brutale and F3 come to the fore. Does not matter. In total, the two are on the same level in terms of response behavior and load changes, even if they score their points in different ways.

Who will win the comparison test??

A look at the table of points reveals that it stays that way for almost the entire comparison. Overall, the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer collects 18 points more on its account, impresses with its balanced functionality. This is also noticeable in pillion transport. Although the knee angle is a bit narrow for the passenger, the contact with the driver and the comfort on the wide cushion in the second row are right from the first meter. The MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800 with its exciting design with the optically free-floating rear makes a small dash through the bill. It crouches up high and somehow not connected to the driver as a pillion passenger.

But still: the bottom line is that the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800 is probably the most everyday motorcycle from MV Agusta. The triplet from Varese combines an objectively high utility value with Italian chic, pampers the eye and reason. Until the price falls. 14,990 euros – you need a cappuccino to calm you down. Fortunately, objectivity is not necessarily the most important impulse when buying a motorcycle. Although that could almost apply to the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer: It is more reserved when it comes to spending money and looks. With her, function is the focus, only then does form follow. At 9595 euros, this is easy to get over.

The curves diverge. From almost 50 cm³ more displacement, the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer develops up to 10 HP and 11 Nm more at its peak. This is also noticeable when driving: the Tracer always pushes forward confidently, the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800 rather likes the momentum in the second half of the engine speed.

The fact that the Italian is still ahead in the draft measurement is due to the short translation of her sixth gear. In the corridors below, both are always at the same height when the throttle is fully opened. Even the tracer tends to have the edge. Noticeable: the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800 does not quite reach its rated output, the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer slightly surpasses it.
