Dani Pedrosa announced his retirement after the current season at a press conference as part of the MotoGP race at the Sachsenring. The Spaniard, who has competed in MotoGP since 2006, is ending his active racing career. The now 32-year-old, who entered the 125cc World Cup in 2001, was world champion in the 125cc / 250cc class three times in a row between 2003 and 2005. This was followed by promotion to the premier class, in which he was denied a world championship title.

Pedrosa was recently eliminated from the Repsol Honda team. The Spaniard had not received a follow-up contract for the 2019 season with the world championship team. His place in the team is still Ducati rider Jorge Lorenzo.

Tears at the end of the press conference

At the press conference, Dani Pedrosa explained why he decided to resign: “I will end my career after this season and so I won’t be participating in MotoGP next year. It was a tough decision. I thought about it for a long time because I really love this sport. Although I have the opportunity to continue racing in the coming season, I no longer have the feeling of being involved with the same intensity as I used to be. I have noticed that I now have other priorities in life.”

In his World Cup career, Dani Pedrosa has so far won 54 wins.

The 32-year-old also stated: “I am very lucky to have been given all of these opportunities. It was overwhelming for such an important team and to be able to drive in front of such great fans. I’ve achieved far more than I initially expected and I’m also very proud of what I have achieved. I have fulfilled my dream of becoming a racing driver.”

When he was asked towards the end of the press conference whether he remembered anything special, the Spaniard even got a tear or two down his face. He remembered an event from long ago: “When I started racing as a little boy, I was chosen from a multitude of young drivers in Jarama. Despite the great competition, they decided on me back then. From that moment to the present day it was just outstanding and there were many wonderful moments”.

At the end of the press conference, Dani Pedrosa thanked his team, the Dorna, his sponsors and his family, without whom he said he would never have made it that far.

MotoGP colleagues show their respect

Some of his long-term colleagues such as Valentino Rossi have also spoken out about Pedrosa’s resignation and pay tribute to the Spaniard. According to his own statements, Rossi would have been happy about a continuation of Pedrosa’s career, possibly with Yamaha. He also regrets that Dani Pedrosa was denied a world championship title in the premier class despite strong performances.

Teammate Marc Marquez also commented on his teammate’s resignation. He has learned a lot from Pedrosa since joining MotoGP. In addition, he gave the team a lot despite missing the world championship title. Pedrosa was also one of his childhood heroes. Especially at the beginning, he told him a lot of details that made Marquez what he is today. In terms of technology and feeling for the motorcycle, he is one of the best in MotoGP.

Even if Pedrosa does not comment on his future himself, there are rumors that see the Spaniard as a test driver and brand ambassador at Honda. Other rumors want to know that Pedrosa is also being discussed at KTM as a test and development driver.
