Two years ago, the small Italian company VDM, based in Rimini like Bimota, presented the Vyrus, which was actually a naked Tesi. Now Bimota presents the original Tesi 2D, which was actually a Vyrus. Confusing ?? but reason enough to check out the Vyrus alias Tesi 2D.
Sure, this driving report could have been called “Fascination Technology”. But although the Bimota Tesi 2D would be just as aptly characterized by this, would it be just as inappropriate as wearing Birkenstock shoes with fine Italian thread. In the Italian language lies the music ?? as in the Tesi, the irrepressible passion for exclusive technology.
At first glance, it becomes clear that the bare Tesi 2D has little in common with the first fully clad variant that Bimota presented in the early 1990s. Nevertheless, the latest version embodies the original company philosophy of the Italian luxury smithy. Bimotas are intended to arouse emotions with the combination of technological avant-garde and selected high-tech materials, as only objects that have been created with extreme devotion and care can do. With its provocative styling and the eye-catching swing arm construction on the front wheel, the Tesi 2D attracts the greatest attention even while standing. But what about the emotions when driving??
What better opportunity than race training in Mugello? Even if a naked bike of this category will rarely be found on racetracks, the Tesi 2D somehow belongs on this traditional course, which is now in Ferrari hands and, with its wide curves, spectacular uphill and downhill sections, is perfect for the emotionally charged motorcycles from Bimota fits.
The first surprise after the 991 cubic centimeter Ducati two-cylinder warmed up loudly in the pit lane is the generous amount of space on this petite motorcycle, which even gives riders who are almost two meters tall enough freedom of movement. In addition, the operation of the futuristic Tesi is no mystery. Everything lies comfortably in the hand or can be made to match using adjustment options such as the footrest system.
Tesi’s instruments are characterized by progress through reflection. While more and more manufacturers are using digital tachometers that are difficult to read, Bimota relies on a conventional analog display that prominently focuses on the essentials with large digits and wide scaling. Only the speed is indicated by means of a small digital display, which is also directly in the driver’s field of vision ?? and causes astonishment at the end of the long start-finish straight.
The instrument shows a full 230 km / h after the crest. Nothing special for a super athlete in Mugello. For a naked bike with a nominal 86 hp, on the other hand, this is more than astonishing. This is made possible by the powerful two-cylinder from Ducati, which is subjectively very good in the lining and also impresses with its silky smooth response and a full performance curve in the medium speed range. The Tesi 2D doesn’t make things too difficult for the air-cooled two-valve engine. A modest 150 pounds ?? full tank, mind you? have to accelerate the 86 hp and thus ensure a power-to-weight ratio that would look good on every 600 super sports car.
Accordingly, the four-piston calipers of the Brembo brake system with the two 320 millimeter discs have easy time slowing down the flyweight. In Mugello, the chaff is separated from the chaff in the braking zone after the knoll
Wheat. Anyone who does not have a very stable chassis with the brutal deceleration that is necessary there, when shifting down from sixth to first gear, should set the braking point early enough to be able to turn in on time. A discipline that the Tesi should actually master effortlessly, the Italians promise particularly safe driving behavior due to the complex wheel hub steering with powerful front wheel swing arm.
However, theory and practice are far apart, at least on the racetrack. Although the Tesi masters the braking zone with flying colors, the high technical effort not only brings advantages. Although the Bimota remains very calm and directionally stable when braking, and this system also efficiently compensates for the brake nod, the front wheel does not offer enough feedback about the road surface or the blocking limit. A disadvantage that BMW’s Telelever system also has to contend with. When you bend with the brake pulled, you don’t really feel safe, although the double-system air suspension strut on the forehand is sensitive.
The same goes for quick changes of direction in Mugello’s liquid S-combinations. The 149 kilograms can be thrown from one side to the other in a playful way, but the guidance of the front wheel is more conveying
an indifferent driving experience and does not inspire much confidence. The reason for this could be the two push rods and their bearings that transmit the steering movements. The disadvantage of this design are the many bearing points, the play and friction of which dilute the feedback somewhat.
This leaves a mixed impression after a day with the Tesi. The Ducati engine is impressive, the technically very complex chassis is an absolute eye-catcher and works well apart from the slight feedback. However, the fact that the steering angle is very small does not offer any advantages compared to conventional solutions. If, on the other hand, one regards the Tesi under the maxim under which the Bimota technicians created it, as “tecnologia dell ?? emozione” and not as a normal motorcycle, then one can only congratulate. It actually conveys the passion with which it was built, causing a sensation everywhere with its extraordinary technology. A multitude of setting variants also leaves plenty of scope for technology freaks who like to experiment. And the price of around 40,000 euros will do the rest to arouse emotions and preserve the exclusivity of the Tesi 2D.
