BMW K 1600 GT / GTL – flagship and luxury liner
Two top touring bikes with in-line six-cylinder engines were launched in BMW’s high-tech fleet. The waves beat high in the face of a fireworks display of equipment. Cast off!
South Africa. A different climate – high summer, a different life: nature richer, the colors more colorful, the air clearer. In addition, there is now other driving. For the first time, BMW is equipping motorcycles with six cylinders in a row after its automobiles. The K 1600 GT and its even more luxuriously equipped sister ship GTL with the same engine, drive train and landing gear compete with the Pan European, 1400 GTR, FJR 1300 and Gold Wing on Seh-Reisen.
In escort, the two top tourers replace the four-cylinder K 1300 GT, with a similar concept: cylinder bank inclined at 55 degrees, aluminum bridge frame, Duolever front wheel guide and Paralever cardan single-sided swing arm. But with a fascinating, highly emotional engine. The in-line six-cylinder wakes up with a cozy, eerie wroouumm. The red GT sounds sensual, almost aggressive from its two completely separate three-in-one exhaust pipes. She blow drying the cilia.
D.the roaring sound is reminiscent of the BMW M3 power sedan. In contrast, the silver-white luxury liner GTL sounds quieter, more muffled, like a five from BMW. This is made possible by a differently designed interior of his chrome-plated pots. Both 1600s, which are actually 1650s, not only have real six-appeal acoustically.

Precision work: all taillights are LEDs, including additional brake lights in the top case of the K 1600 GTL. Air ducts on the outside of the case lids are supposed to keep the rear clean, the six exhaust outlets speak for themselves.
It is pure pleasure to glide through the South African picture-perfect landscape with extremely lazy shifting gear. BMW promises 125 Newton meters after 1500 tours. The heavy cruiser sets off energetically. On the Franschhoek Pass, sixth can stay in even in corners that would otherwise be negotiated in third gear. Fantastic elasticity. The gearbox of these pre-series machines here sometimes has problems, the shifting travel is rather long. In the lower speed range, noticeable load change shocks can be provoked with accelerator-to-accelerator. Then it limes and rattles a little from the engine room. It’s a BMW.
Despite the perfect mass balance of a straight six, very gentle vibrations can be felt on the pre-production GT. The six-cylinder boxer of a Honda Gold Wing runs even smoother. Cruise control on, half way ahead. Up to 4000 tours, that’s a good 130 km / h in sixth gear, the propulsion takes place with vigor. Then the afterburner ignites. Now the engine changes pitch and character, barks and roars. Even at 5250 tours, the maximum torque should be 175 Newton meters, at just 7750 rpm a whopping 160 hp are available. Madness, that thrust when turning it out feels like riding a torpedo.
As the successor to the K 1300 GT, BMW’s 1600 flagships are the world’s most powerful super tourers. Consumption optimization was a central development goal by minimizing the higher internal friction in a six-cylinder and by a high compression ratio of 12.2 to one. The GT should consume 4.5 liters per hundred kilometers at a constant speed of 90, 4.6 liters the GTL. The GT’s 24-liter tank – the GTL even holds 26.5 liters of Eurosuper – should allow a large operating radius.
For Gran Tourismo, for great tours, the swallowing undercarriages guarantee. The 1600s are always full and stable on the road. It is sensational how their spring elements iron even bumpy country lanes, supposedly to smooth slopes. Bumps in the curve, consciously provoked load changes at the apex, it doesn’t matter. The two cruise ships move steadfastly on their way. The suspension elements in the ansons are even more comfortable-
tuned to the unchanged chassis of the GTL. The ESA II electronic spring / damper adjustment is very effective as an extra ex works. At the push of a button, it adjusts the chassis in nine practical levels to the conditions of the asphalt, load and driving style.

When the GT footpegs drag, you are on the wrong path.
BMW specifies 319 kilograms for the GT, without a suitcase and with 90 percent fuel on board. The GTL weighs 348 kilograms, including the case, top case and nine tenths of the tank capacity. Here as there, this would result in a load of around 200 kg, with a permissible total weight of 0.54 and 0.56 gross registered tons. After such a sheer mass, the big ships feel alone when turning and maneuvering. While driving, a whole hundredweight seems to evaporate easily, so cheeky both roll around the corner. Lively, handy and precise.
When the GT footpegs drag, you are on the wrong path. The Metzeler Z8 Interact rear tire modified for the 1600 series with special identification "C." adheres well and rolls nicely with its 190/55 cross section. The brakes bite strongly and easily. Especially at the front, the standard ABS controls very sensitively. The brake buckling compensation by the Duolever keeps the damper extremely stable, gives a feeling of security, like the low pitching moment when braking in an inclined position and the optional traction control.
Anyone who knows the GT 1300 immediately feels at home on the deck of the 1600s. You sit very similarly, enthroned 81 or 83 centimeters high in the adjustable, heated saddle. Lower benches up to 75 centimeters are available on request. That is the standard seat height of the one-piece comfort bench of the GTL with its pronounced seat recess and lumbar support including a heated pillion seat. For them, higher versions are available. The more upright GTL ergonomics in the US style are reminiscent of the K 1200 LT: handlebars further back, footrests lower and further forward. In addition, the GTL disc is higher and larger.
Smaller captains are constantly looking up through the plexiglass. Then there is heavenly peace, you can listen to the standard audio system of the GTL. However, if the disc is set high, it produces a significant pull, and vortices of wind dance around the shoulders. The on-board engine is phenomenal "air conditioner", Opening wind deflectors on the right and left in the upper part of the fairing. They cool the rider’s torso even in tropical temperatures. When the ignition is switched off, the windshield automatically goes all the way down, including anti-trap function, as theft protection for the Garmin navigation system (650 euros).

Infotainment: optional navigation system above the easy-to-read TFT display (below).
After starting the motor, the disk then moves back to the last selected position using the memory function. Equipment and details set new standards. The spacious luggage boxes can be locked centrally from the handlebar and are still removable. Interfaces for MP3, USB, iPod, Bluetooth and other audio devices meet the highest demands on entertainment and communication; Speakers on the bridge are part of the GTL series. Premiere: In the cockpit, all information from the on-board computer and the selected settings are shown on a 5.7-inch TFT color display – easy to read even when the sun is high.
In the front, two H7 high beam lights with unmistakable LED dark circles and a xenon low beam as standard. Its lens causes automatic level compensation using level sensors on both suspension struts. A world first is the adaptive cornering light to illuminate the road more effectively. Its oscillating mirror compensates for inclinations of up to 25 degrees, for a surcharge of 850 euros – in a package with traction control and tire pressure sensors.
The Power Tourer GT costs 19,900 euros, the luxury liner GTL in the basic version 21,850 euros. A Honda Gold Wing costs from 28,300 euros. BMW’s new flagships, which will be anchored at every dealer from March 19, are therefore on a good price course.
Noticed:
Positive:
- Running culture: silky.
- Thrust: violent, especially at the top.
- Features: opulent, hard to beat.
- Comfort: top chassis and ergonomics.
- Sound: really horny, especially with GT.
Negative:
- Weight: immense when turning.
- Clutch metering: somewhat difficult.
- Throttle response: in mode "Dynamic" toxic.
