Driving report Harley-Davidson Road King
2009 Road King
Classic beauties are best adorned with shiny jewelery. For example White Gold Pearl with Pewter Pearl applications. What else does the 2009 vintage offer??
For an extra 715 euros, everything is in the paint. More important than the beautiful appearance of the two-tone paintwork, which is subject to surcharge, are the inner values. The 2009 Road King is visually indistinguishable from the current model, but in terms of chassis it is almost a new development. Frame and wheels are completely new. According to the data sheet, the steel pipe work with the frame rear screwed on should be 67 percent stiffer than the previous one.
At the front, a wheel that has grown from 16 to 17 inches takes over the management tasks, at the rear the tire width of the Dunlop D 407, which was specially developed for the 2009 Touring series, increased by 40 millimeters to an impressive 180 millimeters. With the result that the Road King runs steadfastly and without swinging even at top speed. In addition, handling and cornering stability have improved significantly compared to the predecessor. This is good for driving pleasure and bad for the expansive, repositioned running boards, which, according to the press release, are supposed to increase the lean angle by one percent (!). Not enough to be permanently spared from contact with the ground.
The now standard ABS is responsible for increased driving safety. It enables braking values that are well within the normal range for the genre, but are not record-breaking. This also applies to the performance, which is also due to the impressive weight of 373 kilograms. Because despite the shortened secondary gear ratio and a stately 131 Nm torque, it is proceeding confidently, but not really agile.
The 1585 cm3 V2 remained unchanged, but there was vigorous development on the periphery. The front cylinder wriggles on a modified suspension, the throttle position is transmitted electronically, and the huge exhaust system has a new layout. The manifold of the rear cylinder no longer overflows, but under the gearbox to the muffler, so that the front passenger‘s calf has to suffer less from waste heat. The newly shaped bench offers more space and ensures more comfort for the crew despite the rather tight suspension setting. Due to the revision of the chassis, the Road King has gained enormous inner values. The outer ones are never up for debate at Harley anyway.
