Driving report Husqvarna TE 250 (2009)

Enduro version based on Crosser

With a completely redesigned motocross model, Husqvarna has been flying the flag in the popular 250cc class since the beginning of this season. On the technical basis of the Crosser, the off-road forge has now also designed the enduro version, the TE 250.

The start in life was a bit bumpy for Husqvarna’s 250cc project. In the debut model, the Crosser TC 250, breaking frames caused trouble at the beginning of this season. The reason: poor quality pipe material. With new suppliers, the faux pas should now be resolved.

Gut so, because the completely redesigned motorcycle comes up with extreme key data, at least on the engine side. No other quarter-liter engine is lighter (22 kilograms), and none has a shorter stroke (50.9 millimeters). The enduro model, the TE 250, will also adopt this drive for the 2010 season. On top of that with an electric starter instead of a kick starter and gasoline injection instead of a carburetor.

Which immediately creates initial sympathy. A push of the button, and the petite unit purrs obediently to itself. And already in the first bends it becomes clear that with this TE 250 a completely new era is dawning at Husqvarna. The familiar, emphatically front-wheel-oriented and often somewhat sluggish driving behavior gives way to extremely agile handling on the new 250. Aiming at the bends, folding down and accelerating out, all of this works with a snap of your fingers thanks to the more active seat position and the shortened wheelbase.

Much of this striking progress is due to the new engine. The 250 does justice to its technical disposition, turns unbelievably, pushes ahead properly, but tackles the very low speed regions, as is usual for its class, a bit cautiously. Still astonishing: Compared to the carburettor-equipped cross engine, the enduro propellant is at least equal, if not superior.

Which ultimately speaks just as much in favor of the reorganized overall package of the TE 250 as the revised suspension, which is noticeably firmer than the previous model. At least cross-country pilots will be happy about the larger suspension reserves.
