Driving report Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster
A real cruiser, only sporty in the approach
Triumph has introduced two new retro bikes for the 2018 model year: the Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster and the Triumph Bonneville Bobber Black. We could already drive the Speedmaster.
Triumph expands the Bonneville model family: The latest members are Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster and Triumph B.onneville Bobber Black.
Most people already know the Triumph Bonneville Bobber from last year. For 2018, Triumph is giving the Bobber a slightly darker look and is calling the new model Bonneville Bobber Black. In addition, compared to last year’s Bobber model, the Black is getting a new chassis setup, new wheels and a new fork.
Video of the driving report
In 2018, the new Speedmaster will pay more attention to touring and social suitability than the Bobber. The Speedmaster therefore has an easily adaptable double and single seat, a handlebar that is pulled back, a chrome-plated double exhaust made of stainless steel, forward-positioned footrests, new brakes, LED headlights and 16-inch spoked wheels. Now we were able to drive the Speedmaster for the first time.
Inclined position? no thanks.
The new Speedmaster is clearly a cruiser that invites you to take a leisurely stroll and usually only lets its power flash in short sprints. The two-cylinder relies on a lot of torque at a low speed. Even if the revs drop to 2,000 rpm while strolling, all the Speedmaster needs is a hearty twist of the throttle to rush off again with an impressive roar of exhausts. In the “Road" the specifications that the driver makes with the right hand are implemented directly. This is less true for rain mode.

Sporty ambitions stand in the way of the low lean angle.
Using the contour of its 16-inch balloon tires, it willingly folds into an incline and also performs nimble changes in lean angle. It leaves the impression of carefree handiness. However, the lean angle is not enough for sporty people. Even a slight compression on a bump is enough to produce unsightly grinding noises.

The coordination of spring and damping on the hindquarters is successful, but 73 mm of spring travel is quickly used up on undulating slopes. The Speedmaster remains stable, the fork inconspicuous on bumpy roads.
The brakes are positive. The Triumph only has relatively simple double-piston floating calipers on the fork, but these bite vigorously into the 310 discs and allow considerable deceleration. After the first impression, the ABS is neither aggressive nor too cautiously tuned.
