First ride on the hot three-cylinder
Content of
More power, more torque, more sound for more action and excitement in the Moto2 class. The change from Honda four-cylinder to Triumph three-cylinder should ensure this. In Calafat, the triple prototype gave a first taste of its skills.
A.In 2019 the Moto2 will be powered by Triumph three-cylinder engines. The 765 triple from the Street Triple RS serves as the basis, in its final expansion stage as a Moto2 engine it then has at least 133 hp. PS was able to drive a prototype exclusively in Calafat, Spain.
The three-cylinder is in the chassis of a Daytona, which was prepared for this task with shock absorbers and fork cartridges from K-Tech as well as steering dampers and Dunlop Moto2 slicks on the OZ wheels.
The three-cylinder starts like the fire brigade. Out of the pit lane, and with an enthusiastic roar from the Arrows exhaust, he puts the load on the rear wheel. Compared to its well-behaved series base, the triple is unrecognizable.

From honest man to arsonist
What the technicians have got from the 123 hp series engine is really speechless. Based on an extraordinarily strong center, the triple reaches out splendidly at the exit of the curve.
The racing engine has a longer first gear, otherwise the transmission remains unchanged. The gear changes are clean and crisp thanks to the automatic gearshift – there is no blipper on board. But the first is not needed here, even the narrow corners of the Spanish course can be taken in the second.
Below 6,000 rpm, the triplet is still a bit cautious, from this mark on there is pressure in the boiler. At 8,000 rpm, in second gear it quickly pulls the front wheel up. Quickly followed by the third. Does that thing have pressure in the middle.
The three-cylinder works precisely, directly and willingly. Stingy with vibrations. It delivers its performance very evenly, turning powerfully and with a triumphant roar.
In its final expansion stage, the racing engine should turn around 14,000 rpm, which is 1,350 rpm higher than the series engine.
The Moto2 racers will be equipped with Magneti Marelli electronics which, in addition to launch, traction and wheelie control, also have an electronically adjustable engine brake.
Only a few changes to the production engine
triumph
The first test laps with the new Moto2 engine left a lasting positive impression.
The list of changes compared to the production engine is surprisingly short. CNC-milled channels, higher compression and titanium valves with harder springs ensure optimal gas throughput and efficient combustion even at the highest speeds. As mentioned, first gear was longer, and an anti-hopping clutch and a smaller alternator rotate under the narrower housing covers. Overall, the racing engine is 4.4 kilograms lighter than the series. In addition, a modified oil pan opens up more freedom in the manifold routing.
The development of the engine is already well advanced. There were no real problems with the durability during the test phase.
Conclusion: An absolutely impressive performance that the three-cylinder delivered in the few test laps. A real grenade in combination with an agile super sports suspension. When will such a 765 athlete come from Triumph? The answer from the officials? A mischievous grin.
