Driving report Triumph Speed Triple (2018)
Three-cylinder naked bike even livelier
The new Triumph Speed Triple is in the starting blocks. The 2018 model comes with more power, better handling and a TFT display in the cockpit. We have already driven it.
Nhen only Superbike legend Carl Fogarty and TT racing driver Gary Johnson were allowed to play with the new Speed Triple models, Triumph is now allowing the rest of the world to participate in the new three-cylinder models.
The new Speed Triple is available in an S and a better equipped RS version, both of which should be able to do everything better than their predecessors. But they want to have retained their rebellious character.
Three-cylinder is more willing to turn and stronger
triumph
The three-cylinder engine was revised in many points.
To the facts. The 1,050 cm³ three-cylinder has been fundamentally revised. Triumph names 105 new parts that give the triple a total of 150 hp and 117 Nm of torque. A lighter crankshaft, a lighter alternator and less splashing losses due to a smaller oil pan make the three-cylinder more willing, more spontaneous and 1,000 rpm. turn up further. New pistons, modified exhaust ports and increased compression help with top performance. The package is rounded off by a more aerodynamic stainless steel exhaust system and an optimized six-speed gearbox with an anti-hopping clutch.
The cockpit is becoming more colorful
triumph
The cockpit is equipped with a 5 inch TFT color screen with an adjustable viewing angle, which should guarantee optimal readability.
Brave new world in the cockpit. Both models are now equipped with a 5-inch TFT color screen with an adjustable viewing angle and extensive customizable display. The new switch units on the handlebar are equipped with illuminated buttons. One of them controls the now standard cruise control. Five different driving modes can also be set. A USB socket supplies mobile devices. Headlights with integrated daytime running lights ensure better visibility.
Other technical features include an ABS that can be switched off and a traction control that can also be switched off.
Proven frame, familiar design
triumph
The main frame and the single-sided swing arm come from the predecessor.
The aluminum double bridge frame and the single-sided swing arm were adopted unchanged from the predecessor. At the front there is a fully adjustable 43 mm Showa upside-down fork with 120 mm of travel, and a fully adjustable Showa central spring strut with 130 mm of travel at the rear. The wheels now have a ten-spoke look with unchanged dimensions and tire sizes. Braking power is provided at the front by 320 discs and Brembo four-piston monoblock calipers. At the back, Nissin double-piston pliers bite into a 255 disc. Triumph gives the dry weight of 192 kg (RS: 189 kg).
The characteristic features of the Speed Triple also include a milled rear hub cover, the characteristic headlight profile and a flyscreen with integrated air inlet, handlebar end mirror made of aluminum, a slim 15.5 liter tank, a narrow radiator and a two-part seat with an embossed Triumph logo.
RS with exclusive equipment
triumph
The RS competes with improved equipment.
Anyone who uses the Triumph Speed Triple RS receives various fine upgrades. The suspension elements then come from Ohlins (NIX30 fork in front, TTX36 shock absorber in the rear), ABS and traction control master their profession even when cornering, the locking system is keyless, Arrow mufflers with titanium-carbon finish replace the stainless steel counterparts and the pillion seat carries a lockable cover. In addition, the RS is equipped with corresponding emblems and various carbon components.
Speed Triple became even more alive
triumph
On the country road it doesn’t really matter which gear is engaged.
Although the changes do not seem serious at first glance, a lot has happened with the optically largely unchanged Speed Triple. Both have the same revised 1,050 triplet. Thanks to a modified cylinder head with revised ducts and combustion chambers, as well as camshafts with more cam lift, harder valve springs, a new timing chain tensioner and a revised oil supply, it now doesn’t turn just 1,000 rpm higher.
Its power increased from 140 to 150 hp, the torque from 112 to 117 Nm and is already at 7,150 and thus 700 rpm earlier.
In addition, the technicians have reduced the rotating masses on the crankshaft and balance shaft as well as the clutch by 19%, which is supposed to benefit the turning pleasure. And the transmission also got a revision.
There were no changes to the chassis, coordination of the suspension elements or the seating position. Was good, is good.
Both the S and RS models now have the TFT display familiar from the Street Triple, as well as illuminated switch units and cruise control. The RS also got a keyless go system (you still need a key for the tank) and an IMU that monitors the new lean ABS and traction control.
The chassis continues to work well, the spring elements of the RS come from Ohlins (S: Showa). And they do an excellent job. On the country road, the Sweden dampers work smoothly, and still give comfort a reasonable amount.
The balanced handling of the Speedy is impressive, it never leaves you in the dark about what it is doing, is not hyperactive, but confident and serene. And the engine waits with unprecedented agility and revving, accelerates as smooth as butter, reacts very directly to gas commands and the shiftability of the transmission has improved enormously, the gear changes are really slippery. The optional automatic switch is still recommended. Especially for sporty drivers. The broad torque plateau of the revised three-cylinder makes the question of which gear is almost superfluous on the country road. And the sound? Still inimitably smoky triple, but never vulgarly loud.
The chassis is also impressive on the racetrack
triumph
The spring elements of the RS also exist when used on the racetrack.
During a detour to the Almeria race track, the suspension elements showed that they have enough reserves for this task and that they are up to speed. The brakes, with somewhat sharper pads and Brake Boosts MCS 19-21 brake pump with adjustable transmission ratio, do not pack a lot, but can be easily dosed. Whereby on the highway "19th"-Translation and on the racetrack the "21st"-I liked translation best.
The changes may not seem sensational, but have made the Speed Triple even more agile, easy to turn, more powerful and therefore more lively.
The new Speed Triple in the S version is available from 13,750 euros plus 450 additional costs (Jet Black, Crystal white plus 125 euros), the RS starts at 15,850 euros plus 450 additional costs (both colors).
