Driving report Triumph Speedmaster, model 2008

Have a nice cruise

The first look is deceptive. The second and third too. In this respect, the Triumph designers can pat each other on the back: goal achieved, nobody notices. Because the tradition-conscious Speedmaster enthusiast should not be frightened, would like to mention the carburetor, where an injection is now inevitable. Because without them, the currently valid Euro 3 standard can no longer be achieved. Whether the deceptively real mock-up of the two constant pressure carburettors is necessary for the nostalgic styling of the British cruiser remains a matter of taste, it is definitely unique in motorcycle construction. In addition to the tank that has been enlarged from 16.6 to 19.3 liters and the newly shaped silencers, the injection is also the most important change in the 2008 model.

After all: The coordination of the Keihin injection succeeded immediately. Compared to its predecessor, the new one can maintain the level of performance despite the stricter emissions regulations. This is by no means successful for all manufacturers, especially with large-volume two-cylinder engines. In this respect, the Speedmaster remains true to itself in the new model year.

Big-Twin running culture in perfection.

Optical illusion: What looks like a carburetor is an injection.

The 865 cm engine impresses with its impeccable manners and silky smooth running, revs up smoothly from idle speed, doesn’t even rattle at the maximum speed of 8200 rpm, can also be precisely shifted and coupled with moderate manual force. Actually perfect. Objectively speaking, sure, subjectively not only Harley-infected people want a more cruiser feeling in the drive. The parallel twin is still unable to offer this despite the change to 270 degrees of crank pin offset that was already made in the 2005 model.

Reality: 19.3 instead of 16.6 liter tank.

Nevertheless, the following applies: Other manufacturers of big twins would dream of such a smooth run. And from such a chassis. The bench is ?? at least for solo use? extremely comfortable, the handling, measured by cruiser standards, above average, the straight-line stability excellent, the brakes are formidable. However: The suspension struts, which can only be adjusted in the spring base, are quick to be stubborn and even when the potholes are moderate, the Easy Rider’s back is bunched up hard, the footrests touch down fairly early when they are tilted? perhaps as a consolation for the fringed jeans group.
