Womanizer! Unfortunately only the motorcycle, not the driver. Kathrin is clearly enjoying it.

Affordable customizing
Wunderlich usually underlines the touring character of current BMWs. With even more comfort, equipment and Klimbim. But they can also do other things, as the Wunderlich BMW R 100 R Classic shows.
"Can I go with you sometimes?" The pretty lady with the long hair and the top figure kidnapped me charmingly. Her name is Kathrin. “Yes, of course.” That doesn’t happen to you every day. Even if Till Kohlmey from the company W.And finally wanted to leave the photo curve in the Ahr valley: So much time simply has to be for the important things in life. Adjust the helmet and instruct the newly minted pillion passenger (42). “In left turns you look over my left shoulder, in right turns over my right – then you’ll do everything right.” Apparently, BMW specialist Wunderlich also did everything in an exemplary manner. He managed the feat of creating an attractive BMW. Really adorable.

Affordable customizing
R 100 R Classic no longer appears conventional and baroque, but crisp, individual. With little renovation work. The pivotal point is the 2.3 kilogram rear frame at 499 euros (with TÜV certificate). It houses a short fender made of GRP with a knobbly lamp on it. Missing side covers allow a clear view through the filigree construction. The flat, individually configurable “Pure” bench (599 euros) is screwed onto the top. It already fits perfectly as standard. A compact 50 centimeter seat automatically creates a cozy arrangement for two.
Dull and sonorous, but never intrusive
Reduced to the essentials, optical compression: a slim, wiry fender sits in front. Like the colleague in the rear, it costs 119 euros. Bellows on the fork, the traditional 18-centimeter round headlight and elegant bullet indicators call for classically elegant lines. A coherent design language that is intuitively accessible. Wunderlich has the stylish fork stabilizer between the dip tubes and the upper fork bridge specially milled. The high, 80 centimeter wide LSL handlebar of the Wunderlich BMW R 100 R Classic is perfectly at hand. The hands grab thick, brown handles as if by themselves. Its corrugated contour evokes 70s design and feel.
“Hold on tight, Kathrin, let’s go!” The ignition lock placed in the engine housing is hip. The boxer wakes up with a pleasant booming sound. The raised Zach exhaust provides a sporty note. It has EG-ABE, sounds robust. Dull and sonorous, but never intrusive. It sits on a light Y-tube with elbows from BSM. Open, oval K&N air filters on both Bing carburetors are chirping to themselves.
The 60 hp series engine lives and vibrates happily and emotionally. With a slow resting heart rate. The boxer bubbles beautifully evenly through the rev range, runs really smoothly under 2000 revolutions, comes nice and powerful from below. Easy going. 3000 revolutions are enough for healthy propulsion, for a smile on your face. Beyond the 5000, the torque flattens out again. The characteristics of the Wunderlich BMW R 100 R Classic are perfect for narrow streets. Kathrin enjoys good vibrations. Real, pure, unfiltered driving pleasure is that broad-shouldered soaking up the landscape. With a speed limit of 80 to a maximum of 120. For those who find comfortable chugging not enough: Wunderlich also offers various engine tuning kits. For example, the tried and tested 1070 cubic rate with 80 hp.
"Customizing should remain affordable"
The lovingly designed, 186-page “Wunderlich Classic” catalog explains why the classics from BMW are right on trend and Wunderlich is now stepping on the gas across the board: “Because we love these motorcycles with their clear structures. Because we are enthusiastic about the simple, straightforward technology. Because the modular system allows a large number of conversion options: from bobbers to scramblers, everything is possible. Because performance is not the center of the two-wheeled world. Because they just look cool. And because they are so easy to drive. “
Right. It only takes a few kilometers to feel why two-valve engines are so popular. Because they have their own aesthetic. Forms that follow from a comprehensible function. They are good-natured, honest characters. No hot spurs, but real buddies. The Wunderlich BMW R 100 R Classic gently carries Kathrin and me through the steep vineyards. “Customizing shouldn’t be too perfect or too crazy, but rather remain affordable,” said Till Kohlmey, explaining the basic idea. “In principle, anyone can easily assemble this in their own garage.” With matching components. “First of all, we deliberately didn’t take / 5, / 6, or / 7, because they are already too expensive.”
BMW R 100 R Classic for 3500 euros
So this sahara-colored BMW R 100 R Classic shows the potential. It is based on a still affordable model with a Paralever single-sided swing arm from 1992: “They are not in great demand yet, and at the same time, with a 41 fork and two-joint swing arm, a technically better basis, because the ride comfort is right ex works.”
For Till Kohlmey, the BMW R 100 R Classic is about the affordable entry into tuning: “This is the simplest conversion that can be carried out. Such a motorcycle built between 1991 and 1994 is available for around 3500 euros – with a mileage of around 60,000 kilometers. Then all you need is a small inspection and buy parts and a new paint job for around 3000 euros, that’s it. “
Felt lightness at only around 200 kg
Strictly speaking, the Paralever BMW is no longer a real rubber cow, the momentum of the cardan single-sided swing arm is too low for that. Nevertheless, it helps to drive like before: it is better to finish shifting and braking before the curve so as not to provoke a load change reaction. Then nice and round with even pulling through the curve, the radius is right. And if not: course corrections are playful. Nice and handy, this beige-brown boxer BMW. It’s fun how easily it folds down, how easy it can be directed, how neutral it stays on track. Turning on gravel, maneuvering in a soggy parking lot? All simple exercises without cramp. Felt lightness with a weight of only around 200 kilograms.
That creates trust. Also from the passenger to the driver. Anyone who can ride a bike has no problems with the Wunderlich R 100 R Classic. Nevertheless, the BMW turns boldly around the corner when necessary. Whereby the thin tires only require little lean angle even at brisk pace. Conti cross-ply tires “Go” roll off somewhat woodenly, and their low intrinsic damping makes them look a little chunky. After all, they stick quite well. Progressive Wilbers springs make the fork respond smoothly. The series parts, on the other hand, were linear and had spacer sleeves. A tailor-made Wilbers shock absorber is to follow soon. Wunderlich wasn’t about a show bike, but about driving.
Floating 260-millimeter brake discs from EBC rotate at the front. They have ABE, are tweaked by adapted documents via steel braided lines. Despite the tuning, the stoppers are grateful for the support of the rear drum. After all, as of 1992, braking power and dosage are okay. This motorcycle fits into the landscape, the green of the hills, the curvy Eifel. But above all in time. And in the Wunderlich portfolio: Here you can combine everything as you want. Lego for grown-ups, because all BMW boxers from 1969 to 1995 offer a similar technical basis and have been built almost 250,000 times.
The program was actually intended for self-screwdrivers
“There are still an incredible number of parts,” says Till Kohlmey happily. “Even if BMW can no longer deliver for a change, some specialist is guaranteed to have spare and exchange parts on offer.” Actually, the entire Wunderlich Classic range was only intended for do-it-yourself tools. Customers should get new parts little by little: unscrew, screw on, done. In fact, demand from the stand is “unexpectedly good”, and there are already waiting times for the first components. But “a surprising number of customers preferred to let us do the conversion”. Incidentally, also on a BMW R 100 R Sport as an interpretation of a cafe racer or a classically sensual R 60 “dash six”.
Wunderlich reacted and, in addition to a large stock of parts, now also offers a conversion service: tuned two-valve engines, ready from the Sinzig factory. “If someone doesn’t dare, we’re happy to help.” Ultimately, it’s about driving experience, about pride in ownership, about technology that you can touch. Anyone who has ever forgotten why people started riding a motorcycle long ago: The Wunderlich BMW R 100 R Classic will show you again after a few kilometers. It was great, Kathrin, wasn’t it? Goodbye, and thank you for this great experience.

The "Wunderlich Classic Catalog".
The beautifully designed “Wunderlich Classic Catalog” is worth a real recommendation: The BMW specialists from Sinzig am Rhein have put together a huge range for the two-valve boxers from the 1969 to 1996 model years. The extensive offer fills over 180 completely colored pages in a handy B5 format. It includes design elements, tried and tested cylinder and piston kits, various tuning parts (“power kits”, “big bore kits”), high-quality chassis components and all standard and wear parts that are necessary for everyday operation.
All components are coordinated with one another and can often be plugged in & Mount Play so that even less experienced screwdrivers can design their two-valve boxer dream themselves. The catalog also serves as a guide. He gives practical tips on the maintenance and care of the two-valve engine, knows tips on buying used vehicles and shows in a model history which boxers ran off the assembly line in Berlin at what time. It is available free of charge as a printed version (address below) and electronically to leaf through at www.wunderlich.de. Have fun!
