Yamaha has subtly revised the MT-07 for the 2018 model year. We drove the refreshed MT-07.

The fork, which is now much tighter, may not respond as smoothly to hard transverse joints as a premium product, but it keeps the MT absolutely stable on course even in the case of severe distortions.

The same applies to the shock absorber, which is now adjustable not only in the spring base, but also in the rebound damping.

In combination with the unchanged in-line two-cylinder, this results in a sporty mixture that should not only make (re) beginners grin.

The modifications for the 2018 model year include a redesigned tank, a new seat and revised suspension elements.

The modified tank and the newly designed seat result in a significantly more generous amount of space, and even people over 1.85 meters no longer complain of being a little too compact.

The new suspension elements are completely convincing – especially with a view to the motorcycle price segment.

Yamaha has subtly revised the MT-07 for the 2018 model year. In addition to various visual changes, the spring elements have also been revised. We drove the refreshed MT-07.

In particular, the tank and seat were visibly changed for 2018.
For the 2018 model year, the MT-07 had a redesigned headlight, a new tank with large air scoops, a better seat and new parts on the side panels. In addition, the telescopic fork has been revised (130 millimeters of travel) and the rebound stage of the shock absorber can now be adjusted. And how do all the innovations and changes affect you?
So good that it is actually difficult to criticize anything serious about the Yamaha MT-07. Well, the modified tank and the newly designed seat result in much more space, and even people over 1.85 meters no longer complain of being a little too compact. However, the driver’s seat still doesn’t really offer more comfort. After half a day in the saddle, you have the feeling of sitting on the substructure and no longer on the pad. But remedial action can be found quickly in this area – thanks to a flourishing accessories market.

The revision did the spring elements good.
So far, there has also been one in the chassis area. But that could change soon. Because the new suspension elements are completely convincing – especially with a view to the motorcycle price segment. The fork, which is now much tighter, may not respond as smoothly to hard transverse joints as a premium product, but it keeps the MT absolutely stable on course even in the event of severe distortions. The same applies to the shock absorber, which is now adjustable not only in the spring base, but also in the rebound damping. Previously this tended to pump badly during a brisk ride, the Yamaha is now fed up on the asphalt and even riders of around 85 kilograms won’t be disturbed by heavy bumps.
In combination with the unchanged, in-line two-cylinder, imitating a V2 engine, with an ignition offset of 270 degrees, this results in a sporty mixture that should not only make (re) beginners grin. With an empty weight of 182 kilograms, you navigate the 07er playfully through the city using the narrow handlebars, enjoy the restrained and cultivated engine and the everyday sound from the short stubby exhaust, which is quite civilized.

With the revision, the MT-07 will surely win even more hearts.
The engine responds somewhat harshly to gas commands, but hangs lively and with good feedback on the cable and pushes the visually refreshed Yamaha forward with powerful force from 2,500 rpm. It’s amazing how cheeky the twin acts, from 4,000 tours the chain tensions properly, at 6,000 in the lower three gears even the front wheel becomes light. At its peak, the engine pushes 68 Newton meters and 75 hp. But the elasticity of the two-cylinder is its greatest asset. Even in third gear, the engine casually pounds out of tight turns. The six-speed gearbox shifts exactly, albeit a bit bony. The clutch lever, which cannot be adjusted within reach, requires little manual force. If you want to, you can drive a real quick dash with the handy and neutral steering Yamaha. Some stronger bikes will have to work harder in the future to keep up.
And the brakes? Like the entire MT-07, they remain a reliable partner. The initial bite is a bit subdued at first, which should be helpful to inexperienced users, but if you increase the brake pressure on the adjustable brake lever, the fixed brake calipers bite hard into the double disc and vehemently decelerate the Yamaha with the help of ABS.
Everything done right Yamaha
After 220 kilometers of test drive through Andalusia – in extremely demanding weather and road conditions – the new Yamaha MT-07 leaves an excellent impression. The 689 cubic bike will essentially remain what it was in 2018: a good-natured and characterful all-rounder. With the many optimizations, it is now once again suitable for experienced bikers who like a fast-paced, handy, sporty and well-made and inexpensive motorcycle. Chapeaux, Yamaha!
