The 999 had the 749 as a sister, the 1198 had the 848 and the 1199 Panigale?

The chassis differs
899 from its 848 predecessor, of course, as is the case with the superbike
the engine is the load-bearing element, which helps keep the weight of the baby panigale within reasonable limits. Ducati gives 169 kilograms dry for the super sports car, with a full tank and with ABS it should be 193 kilograms – that’s three kilograms less than we recently measured with the standard version of the 1199.
Aesthetes are likely to react somewhat disappointed to the two-arm swing arm of the 899, because its predecessor spoiled with an expensive one-arm swing arm, which is technically more difficult to implement. Ducati is still silent about the price for the 899, but the fact that this solution was used in Bologna shows how keenly attention is paid to the final customer price. And so compromises have to be made when cost-intensive technology of the 1199 is used elsewhere. However, the cast aluminum swingarm is quite well done. A price around 15,000 euros should not be exceeded in order to bring the 899 to buyers.
But still in the range of the new Supersport weapon: The 43 mm Showa fork already had the 848. The 899 Panigale uses the fully adjustable Big Piston version from Showa, which offers a spring travel of 120 millimeters. The steering head angle is slightly steeper (0.3 degrees), the caster shrunk by one millimeter, the wheelbase against-
over the 848 by four millimeters. At the rear, a fully adjustable Sachs shock absorber with 130 millimeters of spring travel, which, like the 1199, is installed horizontally on the right outside. According to Ducati, 52 percent of the weight is distributed to the front and 48 percent to the rear. Together with the 180/60 ZR 17 rear tire from Pirelli on a light aluminum ten-spoke wheel, these numbers suggest an agile motorcycle.
The engine of the 899 Panigale is a real new design, which should produce 148 hp and a torque of almost 100 Nm. More about the technique of the short-
Lumpy L-Twins is in the box above. The power is captured not only by the complex electronics, but above all by the radially mounted Brembo brakes, which bite into 320 mm discs at the front with disengageable ABS. While the 1199 still shines with a fine-resolution digital display in color, the 899 has to make do with a black-and-white screen. We will test the bike for the first time in Imola at the beginning of October – the anticipation is of course huge.
Scrambler
Those who like things a little more casual and more retro, but still rave about Italian motorcycles, could soon find the right thing at Ducati. The Sport Classic was considered a flop, but its failure eight years ago is largely attributed to poor timing, when customers were not yet interested in retro bikes. The final appearance of the new edition is of course not yet known, but there are increasing indications that work is being carried out in Bologna on a new retro bike that is very much based on the legendary single-cylinder bevel scrambler from the 1960s. Ducati had the word “Scrambler” registered as a trademark back in March of this year, and it is no wonder that things are moving in this direction. The 250, 350 and 450 of yesteryear are currently enjoying great popularity not only with collectors, but also appeal to the cafe racer scene and more. Prices of easily over 10,000 euros for an original could also attract customers to a new vehicle that would also be technically more reliable and significantly better in terms of performance. Sources around Bologna speak specifically of the 796 twin from the Monster family, which makes 87 hp. In the search for new customers, such a retro bike could enrich the model range below the Monster family, which will obviously be considerably sportier in the future (see PS 9/2013). Whether such a scrambler model, as our computer graphics shows, will be at the Eicma in November is still very questionable. The Intermot 2014 is much more likely for the premiere. The bike would then come to dealers in spring 2015.
Diavel update
Significantly further is the next level of the Diavel, which Ducati has brought a whole new clientele in addition to die-hard fans since its appearance in 2011. Our Spy-Shot shows the big 1200 with a different exhaust and slightly more inconspicuous edges in the tank area than the current Diavel. The engine is being retuned, which is why a new exhaust is being developed. Also to be seen: the next one Diavel could have a “cladding” in the form of a “fly screen”, ie a windshield or window.
There is a little Diavel there-
against no sign of life yet. The Power Cruiser has already been used several times in conjunction with the smaller Testastretta such as the 848 Evo.
