A quantum leap in driving dynamics
With the new Monster Ducati throws off all ballast of the glorious past. A quantum leap in driving dynamics.

Let’s not dwell on questions of aesthetics and heritage: Yes, they do Ducati Monster (2021) no longer has a tubular space frame, that’s it. We’d rather stick to numbers, and they speak for the new monsters. The mid-range naked bike is almost 20 kilos lighter than its predecessor, the Monster 821. The main reason for the dry weight of 166 kg is the new frame, which is made of cast aluminum instead of tubular steel and is not only 4.5 kg lighter, but also builds much narrower. This not only makes the entire front section slimmer, but also gives the Ducati Monster something that it has never really had in its entire history: a decent steering angle.
Extensively revised 937 cm³ Testastretta
The rear frame made of glass fiber polymer with a new seat unit and the cast aluminum swing arm with distinctive openings also save a lot of pounds. In the first case there are two, in the second 1.6 kg for the Monster 821. The new wheels tumble another 1.7 kg. The revised Euro 5 engine saves the last 2.86 kg, including the new exhaust system. This 937 cc Testastretta is also used in the Hypermotard and the new SuperSport 950, but it has only been extensively revised for the Ducati Monster (2021): new cylinder head with covers, new alternator and clutch cover including aluminum screws, new shift drum and hydraulically operated clutch as well as new pistons and connecting rods – everything lighter than the 821 and the conventional 950. The V-Twin develops 111 hp at 9250 rpm, and the torque peaks in 93 Nm.
The electronics package of the Ducati Monster (2021) ranges from the TFT display to the standard quickshifter up / down to cornering ABS with Supermoto setting options, wheelie and traction control to the three driving modes with further configurable engine characteristics.
New Monster vs. Monster 821
The latter were not yet final on our first ride with the Ducati Monster (2021). So we stayed with the sport mode with the engine characteristics “high”. The others were still inharmonious while in “Sports” the potential of the Testastretta flashed. There it hung very directly on the gas, but didn’t jerk a bit below 2,500 rpm and turned up very nicely. The power delivery was very linear and the running smoothness was pronounced.
The most amazing thing was of course the handling of the new Ducati Monster (2021), especially because Ducati gave us a Monster 821 for the test ride for comparison. The new one looked like a curvy toy against a somewhat bulky fellow. While the 821 has to be turned in noticeably more decisively and requires a more active driving style overall, the new Monster can do that fluffy easily. A nudge on the much more relaxed handlebar – and it willingly folds down. She can unwind any line, while her predecessor stoically follows the trail that has been taken and reluctantly gives herself to new commands. Of course, this old-school posture also contributes to this, as it used to stretch the monster pilot so far over the tank and crammed it tightly into the seat. All of that is in the new Monster story, it is a modern, agile, slim and light midsize naked.
Conclusion
Ducati stuck to the iconic styling of the monsters for a long time, but has now recognized that nostalgics believe that there is nothing more to be gained with 90s design than the beauty prize. Especially no new customers, because the former mega-seller has become a slow seller. In the saddle of the new Monster edition, you can immediately feel the breath of fresh air – from the seating position to the handling and the engine. Desmo-Twin and the quote from the legendary humpback tank will remain with the Ducati Monster in 2021 – everything else is finally affordable from a driving dynamics perspective.
