The international rubbers, front tires from Spain, rear tires from Thailand, let the 700s wag back and forth as quickly as possible. With the Michelin Pilot Road 3, the Honda drives in a balanced way down to deep lean angles. And really precise steering too. The momentum when pulling the brake is noticeable, but controllable. And wet grip was superb in previous tests. Everything goes well together!

The German Metzeler Roadtec Z8 Interact tires turn the Biedermann into an arsonist, arouse sporty talents. The NC 700 folds down cheekily and boldly until the footrests drag. Great liability meets the minimum set-up moment in an inclined position. Top! The rear tire in particular works great. Only steering precision and feedback from the front wheel should be better. The bottom line is a clear recommendation.

With the Dunlop Road Smart 2 tires, the NC 700 is sluggish – handling should be easier. The generally well-mannered accuracy of aim suffers somewhat from the cumbersome turning in. Just like the neutrality in an inclined position under the handle on the front brake: the righting moment is extremely strong. And the rear wheel rolls more uncomfortably, with little self-damping. Conclusion: functional in the midfield.

The Continental make the NC 700 very handy, but never nervous. The Road Attack 2 steer cleanly and, thanks to their high steering precision, tempt you to drive fast and agile. They hardly stand up and comfortably dampen bumps. Earlier tire tests showed that the Contis don’t do quite as well in the wet. They are the first choice in drought conditions.

The Honda NC 700 S drives even better with the right tires. The Japanese tires from Bridgestoe make the 700s seem quite stiff around the steering head, making them more unwieldy when turning. On the other hand, the Honda drives with the BT 023 very stable and predictable, simply good-natured. It remains neutral in an inclined position and hardly stands up even when braking. In addition, the tires adhere well, especially to the front wheel. Overall, recommended despite sluggish handling.

It has often been a pain in the ass to venture into the diffuse field between scooter and motorcycle. Even at Honda, just think of the futuristic cross-over experiment called DN-01. The design was too daring, the technology too unusual – that was not at all well received by the market. With the Honda NC 700 S, which is actually a mixture of scooter and motorcycle, things are completely different. The difference: Even at first glance, the inexpensive all-rounder can be identified as a real motorcycle, elements and structures from the scooter area remain optically discreet in the background. Which is why the NC was immediately received extremely positively by customers and became a bestseller in the first year. In this case, Honda’s courage was rewarded once.

The Honda NC 700 S was also welcomed positively in MOTORRAD’s long-term test fleet. An undemanding small motorcycle that is extremely practical in everyday life, which was often and often used for the city, for short journeys and weekend trips. The long journey was definitely not the NC’s forte, as there is a lack of wind protection, seating comfort, power and speed. Nevertheless, the Honda unwound the 50,000 kilometers in just over two years, which proves its popularity. The large storage compartment under the tank hood turned out to be extremely useful in daily use, even if it makes refueling a little more cumbersome because of the tank cap under the seat bench. It gets even more fiddly when a luggage roll prevents the bench from folding up.

Pistons, connecting rods and parts of the valve train come from the car

Endurance test final balance Honda NC 700 S

Bilski

There are auto components in the NC 700.

However, it was not just the chassis concept that was new, the engine of the Honda NC 700 S also has unusual key data and technical solutions. A mere 48 hp from a lush 700 cm³ displacement, which results in a torque-emphasizing character, rather unusual for the entry-level class. The liter output is below 70 HP / l, which is in the range of car engines. The maximum speed of a leisurely 6,750 rpm is correspondingly low. As a motor vehicle group, you could also fish cheap parts from the car shelf.

Said and done. The 1.4-liter four-cylinder from the Honda Jazz mimicked the generous donor. Pistons, connecting rods and parts of the valve train come unchanged from the car. “There they easily stop 300,000 kilometers and more”, says Guido Nowak, quality technician at Honda Germany. Did the Honda NC 700 S inhale a touch of immortality? You could almost guess it, because the dismantling of the engine at the end of the 50,000-kilometer distance brings to light parts that are not too far removed from being new. “Just retracted”, Klaus Bescher from Honda Marketing comments with obvious satisfaction on the neatly spread out individual parts of the Twin in the MOTORRAD conference room. In any case, it can be said that not a single part of the engine shows significant wear, it can be reassembled exactly as it is.

Endurance test final balance Honda NC 700 S

The starting shot: In the top test in MOTORRAD 10/2012, the little NC did splendidly.

So everything is all sunshine? Almost only small clouds cast faint shadows on the overall sunny picture during the endurance test of the Honda NC 700 S. There is, for example, the criticism of the clutch expressed after a few thousand kilometers, which suffered from sluggishness of operation and moderate separation. Shortly after the market launch, Honda realized that the cable behind the steering head had been laid in too narrow arcs. The dealers received an instruction to change the situation on customer machines as part of inspections. In individual cases, clutch cables were also exchanged under warranty. On this, Klaus Bescher: “With us, trains are not wearing parts, of course they will be replaced in the event of defects or sluggishness as part of the warranty.”

But possibly another problem arose with the Honda NC 700 S. Because in the first production batch there were too great tolerances in the bearing of the clutch basket on the gearbox input shaft. Under unfavorable conditions, this could mean that the basket did not run completely free. The test machine may have been affected, as the criticism gradually subsided in the second half of the endurance test. Honda exchanged the clutch basket and the bearings on twenty NC machines, unfortunately the endurance test machine was not checked in this regard.

Otherwise, the dealer’s support was not particularly good. The drive chain, for which there was a recall campaign in September 2012, was not replaced on the test machine until spring 2013. The manufacturer delivered the Honda NC 700 S with chains from RK and DID, the recall due to possible hardness errors only affected RK. The dealer acted correctly according to the specifications and exchanged the – otherwise still intact – chain at a mileage of 26,000, but not the sprocket and pinion. New chain, used sprockets, that couldn’t go well for long. The entire chain set had to be replaced just 10,000 km later. That could have been solved more skillfully.

Discoloration of the switches in the cockpit after a few months

Endurance test final balance Honda NC 700 S

Engwer

Optical defects on the switches in the cockpit.

The MOTORRAD patient was not oversupplied in terms of service anyway: The Honda delegation at the closing meeting amused the Honda delegation at the final meeting that a goodwill application to replace the lamp holder on the Honda NC 700 S, which had been damaged by paintwork, had been rejected. On this Guido Nowak: “We have actually resolved all of the related complaints, around 25 cases, on goodwill.” The cause of the detachments were quite simply parts that were inadequately prepared for painting. A blemish, but unfortunately always in the field of vision.

Just like another point of criticism: the two switches on the left and right in the cockpit of the Honda NC 700 S turned brown after just a few months. The testers assumed premature signs of aging, but the cause was vapors from the production process that could have been easily cleaned up with silicone spray. Guido Nowak demonstrated this on the test machine in the MOTORRAD workshop, after a few seconds the switches shone like new – you should have known that earlier. Nevertheless, Honda had changed the production process after a short time. For this reason, the cockpits of a total of 30 customers were swapped.

Sudden continuous honking in the rush hour

Endurance test final balance Honda NC 700 S

wagner

Ghost horn on the NC 700.

And then there was this funny horn button, which suddenly made the horn sound continuously during rush hour without the driver having to do anything. The return spring of the Honda NC 700 S was broken, the problem also affected other Honda models with an identical switch unit. 42 NC drivers were replaced, which is still less than one percent of the 4,653 machines sold.

The fact that the long-term test balance has to deal with such little things is an indication of the rock-solid technology of the Honda NC 700 S. The sales figures show that the NC was a hit. In the first year of sales in 2012, around 2,000 customers bought it, and the same number chose the sister model X. A year later, there were even more with 2,312 / 1,970 units at slightly higher prices. The successor model NC 750 S, which was once again more expensive, sold significantly worse in 2014 with 974 machines to date.

5,500 euros in the first year an absolute competitive price

Endurance test final balance Honda NC 700 S

www.jkuenstle.de

The Honda NC 700 S impresses above all with its easy handling and neutral driving behavior.

Speaking of price: the Honda NC 700 S was a hit primarily because of its fantastic price-performance ratio. 5,500 euros in the first year was an absolute competitive price for a 700, ABS was of course series from the start. The long-term test in no way confirms fears that the low entry price is associated with a lower quality standard. On the contrary, the entire machine is in good overall condition despite two winter missions.

Time for a conclusion: first place in the eternal endurance test statistics could have been easy, the bottom line is only a single point is missing on the brand colleague CBR 600 F. The low consumption of the Honda NC 700 S is unrivaled, an average of 4.0 Liters / 100 kilometers has not even come close to being achieved so far. The decisive factor is not only the minimum consumption at country road speed, even on full-throttle stages on the motorway, the twin barely allows itself to exceed seven liters / 100 kilometers. The undemanding all-rounder is also right at the forefront when it comes to costs per kilometer. On the other hand, the loss in value is enormous, which is, however, partly due to the fact that the successor model NC 750 has meanwhile come onto the market. And then there were two unscheduled visits to the workshop because of the clutch problem and the horn defect. Annoying, because at its core the NC 700 S is pretty close to being indestructible.

Honda takes a stand

Endurance test final balance Honda NC 700 S

Hertler

Honda employees Klaus Bescher, Oliver Franz and Guido Nowak (from left) inspecting the dismantled NC motor.

The horn button got stuck right at the beginning of the endurance test after a spring broke, an isolated case?
In Germany, the left switch unit was replaced on guarantee in 42 vehicles. In some cases, the horn button springs did not meet specifications and jumped out of position.
Even in the first winter there was ugly paint damage on the lamp holder, which could not be explained by stone chips alone. Why was that?
In a few vehicles of the first series, oily residues in the mold resulted in an inadequate coating. Rejected parts will be replaced under guarantee (provided that the paint has not peeled off due to stone chips).
When the mileage was 26,000, the chain was exchanged for goodwill. Did that affect all model variants, and what was the problem?
We carried out a recall campaign regarding the drive chains on all NC 700 models from model year 2012. The hardening process was not carried out properly on some chains. However, we consider a mileage of 26,000 km to be appropriate.
The rear wheel bearing and the steering head bearing, which engages in the middle position at the end of the test, are likely to be seen as normal signs of wear?
In our opinion, the steering head bearing shows only very little wear and can continue to be used. The rear wheel bearings could not be checked, but we consider 50,000 km to be an acceptable mileage.
At the beginning of the endurance test, the clutch was criticized as being stiff and poorly separating. The later exchange of the train brought some improvement.
The routing of the clutch cable has been changed. Our dealers have been informed about this. Any defective trains will be replaced under guarantee. In a few vehicles, there were also unfavorable tolerance pairings for coupling parts that were changed after a short time.
The two switches on the left and right of the display turned ugly after a relatively short time. How can this be explained?
These are chemical vapors on the surface after the manufacturing process. These can be easily removed with a silicone spray. Even so, the manufacturing process was changed to avoid this.

The cheap solution: luggage roll for the short trip, the problem is then the refueling.

I use my Honda NC 700 S as a commuter and for short tours to the Sauerland and the Eifel. In addition, my NC 700 X has already seen Thuringia, the Black Forest, the Vosges, the Engadine and the Dolomites on long trips. The mileage is currently 49,000, my Honda has not been in the workshop since the 12,000 inspection. I prefer to do it myself, then at least I know how it was done.
Torsten Schepers, Essen

I have my Honda NC 700 S, also lovingly Black Panther called, Bought two years ago and not regretted it for a second after 14,000 km. This motorcycle is unbeatable, except for the low performance, which I, like every other NC rider, consciously accepted. It was love at first sight and it continues to this day. The low consumption of less than three liters / 100 km with normal driving style, the low maintenance costs and the long service intervals are positive. My wife and I have also often enjoyed passes such as the Timmelsjoch, Stilfser Joch and Hahntennjoch as well as longer stretches with the NC, that’s all you need in terms of performance. Hasan Fehmi Sanigok from Ostallgau

Since May 2013, due to the weather and illness, I have only covered about 6000 km with my Honda NC 700 S.. It is a rational motorcycle that still delivers acceptable performance. In addition, the NC is undemanding, reliable and very economical in consumption. The scratch-sensitive seat bench cover should be criticized, however, and Honda should make improvements here. The side stand could also be a little longer, I sometimes have a kind “Falling over”. Otherwise I’m really very satisfied and hope it stays that way.

My experiences with the Honda NC 700 S, for me the entry into motorcycle life, have been positive.
As a beginner, I didn’t miss the performance and was particularly impressed by the storage compartment and, at first, also by the dual-clutch transmission. But the more practiced I got, the less I used the automatic function. Especially when going downhill and with a pillion passenger, it’s scary when suddenly the gear jumps up and you lose engine braking torque. In the end, I was only on the road fully automatically in the city and now enjoy manual shifting again. I can only describe the driving behavior of the NC 700 as good-natured. I can confirm the frequently quoted consumption values of 3.5 to 4 liters / 100 km. One disadvantage is noticeable when selling: Here, thanks to the upgrade with the 750 series, the prices have come under pressure, which increases the resale value of the now in considerable numbers “Beginner machines” significantly diminishes.

In August 2012 I bought a Honda NC 700 X to replace my XJ 600 (manufactured in 1985).
I’ve ridden about 16,000 km since then with no technical problem whatsoever. I have never missed performance, not even in the mountains. The fuel consumption is ingenious, the seating position for driver and passenger is good. Still, there are a few things to complain about, I miss a gear indicator. I usually have to guess which gear I’m currently moving in. I also have to mention the reflective display as a drawback, I improved it a bit with an anti-reflective film. It remains to be mentioned that the bench and clothes are very dirty due to the narrow rear. Nevertheless, overall a great moped for everyday use and trips.
