Endurance test final balance Hyosung
Hyosung GTR 125 R
It looks like its sister GT 650 R, but is a light motorcycle and has now been the first 125 to have completed a MOTORCYCLE endurance test: 12,500 kilometers were the target for it. And that is what the small V-twin cylinder finally achieved.

She is the big one among the little ones. While other 125 cc models differ in their dimensions clearly from the larger models, the GT 125 R looks like a real motorcycle. In short: it really makes a difference. Not only that it is wrapped in the fire-red cladding of the GT 650 R. The around 15 hp V2 also sports an electronic cockpit. “A lot of value was placed on the optics,” said Jorg Muller, Sales and Marketing Manager at Hyosung importer MSA, at the final meeting with MOTORRAD.

However, it was not just the visual advantages that provided topics of conversation in the editorial corridors during the almost 16-month guest performance. The starting weakness of the 125 cc, which drove so many pilots to white heat, was also hotly debated. Below 10,000 rpm, the GT doesn’t pull any sausage off the plate, as editor Thomas Schmieder and others noted in the logbook: “When you start the traffic light, cyclists are serious opponents.”
Almost instinctively you try to push yourself off the ground with both legs when starting off in order to use the Hyosung not to starve to death in the first few meters. On the way department head Annette Johann even sees Einstein’s theory of space and time refuted: “The GT is the proof that locomotion can also take place statically,” she noted in between. And editor Ralf Schneider quickly rededicated the red speed range: “It is no longer the area in which you should only stay for a short time, but the one that you can only leave for a short time,” is his tip.
Continuous operation under full load

The Hyosung looks like its big sister GT 650 R..
Anyone who overcomes their weaker self in this way will at least be rewarded by the Hyosung on the autobahn with speeds of up to 120 km / h, which tempts test editor Andreas Bildl to first expressions of sympathy. However, everyone involved was afraid: Continuous operation under full load cannot bypass the GT 125 R without a trace, especially since gentle warming up at moderate speeds was often too tough a test of patience or was simply not possible. For example, when you had to climb a steep mountain immediately after a cold start in the morning. Although the reason has not been clarified beyond doubt, the two-cylinder finally gave up after 3827 kilometers under graphic designer Stefan Weber. A connecting rod bearing had dissolved. In addition to the crank drive, the front cylinder was also a case for scrap.
This was followed by a standstill of almost four weeks because the supply of Hyosung original parts left a lot to be desired due to an IT conversion. During this time, there was serious discussion in the editorial team about ending the endurance test with the GT 125 R. But those who have been told dead live longer. With a new crankshaft plus connecting rods and bearings, an oil pump and a new front cylinder plus piston, the Korean returned for the second attempt in mid-2006. The repair was carried out under guarantee, with the replacement part costs being within 450 euros alone.
Too many pounds, too many cylinders?

The front brake disc is covered with scoring after the end of the test.
Hardly anyone would have bet even a cent after that that it was the last damage to the GT. But she gave the lie to all skeptics. Apart from the scheduled inspections, for which the Hyosung authorized workshop charges up to 166 euros (first maintenance after 1000 kilometers driven), not a single workshop visit was on the program. Only the fact that the rear brake disc was already at the end after almost 6000 kilometers does not fit into the picture of durability.
The technical effort involved in this 125 cc is also out of the ordinary. Under the cover of the Hyosung there is a completely roller-bearing and air / oil-cooled V2, from which the Korean designers have elicited 14 hp with great effort. Two overhead camshafts control the four valves per cylinder, which are spread at an angle of 75 degrees. “Many parts of the engine come one-to-one from the Hyosung 250 Naked,” says Jorg Muller, explaining the two-cylinder choice, which is unusual in this class. Sure that so much effort is involved in weight ?? the GT 125 R weighs almost 170 kilograms on the scales? and editor Werner Enzmann finds it difficult to classify. “Too many pounds and too many cylinders for a 125cc. Too little payload for a truck, ”he joked after a long tour.
Better on the road with Bridgestone
Bilski
The Bridgestone BT 45 convinces with very good adhesion.
The Hyosung had to serve for that too, time and time again. Because when it comes to seating comfort, she doesn’t have to hide from any big ones. Long pilots in particular will find the right ergonomics and the right seating position quickly. The handlebar stubs are easy to hand and the pegs can be adjusted in several positions ?? Incidentally, another novelty in the eight-liter class. Just like the large 17-liter tank, which enables considerable ranges. Despite the constant turning off, the GT 125 R consumed a moderate 3.7 liters per 100 kilometers on average. And once the engine has warmed up properly, it willingly takes up the gas at almost 7000 tours, and you can move forward faster when you start the traffic light.
The Hyosung trumps when it comes to handling. The only requirement: you part with the Shinko series tires in good time. The tires, which some colleagues referred to as “wooden tires”, still showed hardly any signs of wear after almost 6000 kilometers, but turned out to be unpredictable, especially when wet. Fortunately, fleet manager Gerry Wagner had some understanding and donated Bridgestone BT 45 with better adhesion.
The front 110 / 70-17 rubber guides the 125cc in a sturdy, albeit non-adjustable, upside-down fork. A central spring strut with adjustable bias and deflection works on the hindquarters. The Hyosung works quite handy in curves and reacts almost over-sensitively to the slightest steering impulse in an inclined position. However, you can only get an adequate delay out of the double-piston floating caliper on the front wheel with some effort.
The brakes are also the ones that visibly have to pay tribute to the 12,500-kilometer endurance test. Both brake discs have worn in unevenly, the front one is only 0.3 millimeters from the wear limit. After the total loss in the meantime, the engine did not suffer any further from the extreme stress. Except for the rear piston, which shows slight traces of running and significant heat discoloration, all parts are in largely perfect condition. The only thing that is noticeable is the bearing of the oil pump shaft, which has left slight scuffing marks in the housing. The cause is likely to be minor contamination in conjunction with material defects, which are also responsible for the pitting marks on the gear wheel pairs for the second and fifth gear.
Other things are more annoying. For example, that the bench seat sagged after the endurance test and the bracket for the exhaust collector broke out. In addition, the fork has lost all damping and the shock absorber is completely overdamped in the rebound stage. With a new price of at least 4170 euros plus additional costs, you should be able to expect more quality. But if everything had been perfect, what should the MOTORRAD editors have been talking about in the corridors?
Hyosung comments …

Tester Georg Jelicic (r.) Discusses with Hyosung representatives Wolfgang Heidler and Jorg Muller (l.).
… to the rotating outer rings of the ball bearings of the camshaft bearings.
After clarifying the facts with the manufacturer, the rotation of the roller bearing outer rings in the bearing seat is considered to be harmless. However, the tolerances are checked.
… to the heat discolouration and light running marks on the rear cylinder.
Since the rear cylinder has a slightly higher operating temperature due to its arrangement, the different discolorations and the slight running marks can be explained. The further function is not restricted by this.
… to the eruptions of material on the gear wheels of the second and fifth gears.
Our warranty data do not show any abnormalities with regard to a malfunction of the gear unit due to surface damage to the gear wheels. We have informed the manufacturer. In the future, Hyosung will improve the surface of the gears in terms of material and hardening. Should there be isolated cases with increased running noises, these will be handled in an accommodating manner.
… to the broken bracket of the exhaust manifold.
From the 07 model series, greater attention is paid to ensuring that the exhaust manifold is free of tension during assembly in the factory. Whether a reinforcement of the material (retaining strap) is necessary is checked in Korea.
… for slight wear on the shift fork.
The slight tracks on the shift fork are harmless after consultation with the factory and based on our experience. We do not see any restriction of further trouble-free function.
… the scuff marks on the bearing of the oil pump shaft in the oil pump housing.
We suspect that the slight running marks were caused by machining residues in the area of the oil pump shaft bearings. This did not affect the delivery rate. Hyosung will carry out an intensified incoming goods inspection of this supplier part.
.. for series tires.
The factory-fitted Shinko brand tires are designed to be durable. Have the Bridgestone you assembled ?? admitted ?? a better grip. We will speak to Hyosung to see if we can get a different brand of tires from the factory.
… to the fork that lost its damping during the test.
We check whether a regular change of the fork oil is integrated into the inspection plans and whether a different type of fork oil should be used or the oil fill quantity should be changed by the factory.
