From motorcycle club to mobility group. The largest German club celebrates its 100th birthday. date of birth

on the 24th. On May 1, 1903, 25 motorsport enthusiasts founded the German Motorcyclists’ Association (DMV), the forerunner of the General German Automobile Club, or ADAC for short. A century later, the gentlemen’s club has grown into a multi-billion dollar service company.
ADAC President Peter Meyer, in office since 2001, is driving the expansion into a mobility group. By 2010 he wants to gain another three million members and increase sales and profits with insurance and financial services. Members should soon be able to buy cars on credit at preferential conditions or receive favorable leasing rates. Since 2002, the association has also offered car liability, comprehensive and accident insurance.
The ADAC has a dual structure. As an association, it is divided into 18 regional clubs, the "Gaue". It also finances the breakdown helpers, the so-called Yellow Angels, from the contributions of its members.
Commercial activities, including car rental, travel, sales of car accessories or security training, are bundled in the ADAC Beteiligungs- und Economic Service GmbH with its 22 subsidiaries.
With a turnover of 730 million euros, the GmbH made a profit of 38.4 million euros in the 2001 financial year. The main part of the turnover comes from the euro protection letters that the ADAC offers with membership.
ROAD TO SUCCESS
In 1903, motorcyclists formed a group in Stuttgart and founded the German Motorcyclists’ Association, renamed ADAC in 1911
In 1912, the ADAC opened its first travel agency and set up the first street signs in Germany.
In 1928, the association founded the ADAC auxiliary service, which now has more than 50,000 members. In action: 34 motorcycle sidecar machines
In 1933, the ADAC was brought into line and incorporated into the National Socialist motor corps.
1946 The ADAC is re-established in the American-occupied zone.
In 1954, the first 60 yellow-painted motorbike teams of the “road patrol” roll down the autobahn. In the first three months they help 25000 times.
In 1964, the emergency call center takes its service under the number 222222 ("six times the ZWO"). The number of members increases the following year to one million.
In 1970, the ADAC own rescue helicopter "Christoph" starts for the first time. On board: pilot, paramedics, doctor and space for two injured.
In 1997, the technology center is built in Landsberg am Lech. Here the ADAC tests products from the motorcycle helmet to the new van.
In 1978, the club undertakes another step towards commercialization: Legal protection insurance AG is founded.
In 2000, Adac Travel GmbH concludes its cooperation with the travel company Dertour.
In 2002, the ADAC offers its own accident protection and car insurance, the entry into the lending business is planned.

Anything that rolls
The Automobile Club fights for the interests of motorists on the political front. The power of the Munich club in numbers:
Automobile army: With 14.6 million members and 6,700 employees, the ADAC is the largest automobile association in Europe.
Rescuers in need: In 2002, 1,715 road patrol drivers provided 2.4 million breakdown services.
Powerful: With a circulation of 13.2 million, “ADAC Motorwelt” is Europe’s most widely read magazine. The ADAC publishing house has 1300 books and map titles in its range.
Help from above: The 35 rescue helicopters flew in 2002 28400 inserts.
Economic power: The club takes in more than 700 million euros from membership fees and letters of protection.
WELL PLANNED: In 181 branches, employees issue 3 million holiday tour sets a year.
POINT OF CONTACT: 1.3 million calls for help were received at headquarters in the previous year.
