Let’s not kid ourselves: An ECE-compatible motorcycle helmet is available as a spring bargain on the promotional tables of the food discounters for less than 50 euros. The big motorcycle chains lure with their own brand helmets for just under 100 euros. In order to do justice to the mere protective function, this issue in the double-digit euro range could be sufficient.
But now you have to add your demands as an experienced kilometer eater on a Yamaha Fazer, Suzuki Bandit or Honda CBF. In other words, on bikes that are just as suitable for everyday mule work as they are for exciting holiday tours to the south, through the Alps or to the North Cape. You are familiar with adverse weather conditions and have really come to appreciate a fog-free Pinlock inner visor. An easy-to-use sun visor has become just as important to some.

Helmets in the price range from 149 to 250 euros
And at some point you will have sweat on your forehead – be it after wild cornering or hot coastal road cruising with high traffic density and equally high outside temperatures. The helmet should also offer a skin-friendly cooling lining and effective ventilation.
Regardless of what is expected of a motorcycle helmet anyway: a crisp, but also comfortable fit, easy-to-use chin strap fastener, tightly closing visor with a draft-free interior.
In short: the helmet should be an all-rounder – in car language it would be advertised as “Golf Class”. In order to have these few extra wishes in the helmet, the wallet must of course be opened a little wider, but the additional expenses remain manageable. In this test, we specified a price window of 149 to 250 euros for the mid-range helmets – based on the basic model of the series. It is clear that some people who do not want to be out and about in matt black, silver or gray metallic like most of the German helmet wearers have to add another 20 to 40 euros for the corresponding decor version, depending on the provider. But these additional costs only benefit the appearance, nothing changes in the functionality of the helmet.
With twelve participants, the test field is not only good, but also interesting. Big helmet manufacturers like Caberg, HJC, Nolan or Shark send their (entry-level) models into the race. Other providers such as the large shop chains and mail order companies Detlev Louis and Polo contribute helmets from their own brands (Probiker, Nexo) from their portfolio, which are bought from (mostly Asian) suppliers.
Particularly noticeable: three helmet brands in this test (LS2, Nexo, Rocc) are almost identical except for minimal differences in the equipment, i.e. they come from the same manufacturer who, based on our knowledge, manufactures in China. But that doesn’t initially reduce the quality of the three helmets.

Pinlock visor included?
Much more interesting, on the other hand, is which product manager at the German distributor did the best job. In other words, through special requirements, for example in the choice of the lining material, a different arrangement of the air inlets or a new design of the control elements, the practical benefits could be significantly improved.
Certain standards run through the entire field of participants. A lining that can be completely removed for cleaning is now part of the basic equipment of higher quality motorcycle helmets. On the other hand, one is undecided when it comes to the design of the visor: in order to guarantee a fog-free view, many rely on the Pinlock inner visor, but not everyone installs it immediately, they have simply prepared the visor accordingly. Here there are additional costs of around 30 euros. Incidentally, this is the branch HJC With a flush-mounted Pinlock visor that covers almost the entire visible surface, it stands out from the competition.
Finally, there is the exciting question of which multitool for the head has the edge in the special MOTORRAD shock absorption test.
Impact absorption test at TuV Rheinland
Without the ECE test R 22.05, which is mandatory for motorcycle helmets, nothing works in the MOTORRAD helmet test either. Because the helmets only make it into the editorial team’s test selection when they have passed the shock absorption that is uniformly regulated across Europe. However, a mundane re-measurement of the ECE values is now superfluous. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the helmet manufacturers observe themselves closely.
Peter Schaudt, helmet expert at TuV Rheinland: “As soon as a provider with new models appears on the market, we receive them from competitors to check the ECE values.” On the other hand, in the opinion of MOTORRAD, the ECE only sets a minimum requirement for motorcycle helmets Are defined. On the one hand, this is due to the sometimes absurd test specifications, in which the drop tests are carried out with helmets frozen to minus 20 degrees. In addition, the points of impact are precisely defined in the European standard. Which in turn encourages some helmet providers to reinforce the test points accordingly. A procedure that is within the legal framework, but which makes critics scoff that this method can even be used to knit a bobble hat to make it ECE-compatible.

Practical test procedure from MOTORRAD
In 2009, MOTORRAD therefore sat down at the table with TuV expert Schaudt and accident researcher and biomechanic Florian Schueler (now University of Freiburg) to develop a practical test procedure for helmets. For three years now, the “MOTORCYCLE helmet standard” has proven itself in numerous comparative tests. Central point: the helmet continues to fall from a height of around three meters on the test stand of TuV Rheinland, but not on the ECE edge anvil, but on a real guardrail carrier (“Sigma post”), which, according to Florian Schueler, is often tragic in accidents Role. The helmets are also tested at room temperature; the impact on the left and right side occurs at both low and high speed.
Herder
Crime scene in Cologne: On the drop test stand, the helmets hit a sigma post with the test head.
MOTORRAD editor Klaus Herder said: “After all, the damping structure must work reliably even at slower speeds and should not – as with the well-known ball game – pass the forces through unfiltered.” According to ECE, an acceleration value of 275 g is permissible when impacting the test anvil. The HIC value is calculated from the g value and other parameters (including the duration of the force applied). The “Head Injury Criterion” is considered by doctors and biomechanics as an informative value for making statements about possible brain and skull injuries. The ECE allows a maximum HIC value of 2400. An abstract number, but above all far beyond good and bad. The MOTORRAD expert crew agrees: “In the MOTORRAD test, HIC 1000 should be feasible!” For some manufacturers this means after this test: There is still a lot to be done in terms of accident prevention!

Conclusion
With the Nexx, there is a solid surprise winner, which almost consistently gets top marks in practice and also in the laboratory and is completely convincing – even without a sun visor.
The HJC is closely followed by the best helmet with a sun visor and, at the same time, the best buy. The Shark, which is also very good in practice, scores a few points in weight and in the shock absorption test, but is definitely worth considering.
Until IXS there is a solid midfield that you can hardly go wrong with. On the other hand, the three last placed drop significantly, have serious weaknesses in the fit and save the verdict “satisfactory” through the shock absorption..
This is how MOTORRAD tests
Motorcycle helmets are supposed to save lives. Which is why the shock absorption test, which is carried out together with the helmet experts in Germany at TuV Rheinland (www.tuv.com), is a central element of the MOTORRAD helmet test. In the “Passive Safety” chapter, the most important thing is excellent HIC values, which – in the truest sense of the word – can be vital for the helmet wearer.
Herder
Many heads, one opinion: fitting problems usually run through many sizes.
On the other hand, there is of course “active safety”, which is why every helmet in different sizes is put to the test by as many test heads from the editorial team as possible: If the helmet sits comfortably and is free of pressure points, if the field of vision is correct, the chin strap can be used without it Loss of comfort can be safely closed? During the driving tests, aerodynamics and acoustics are assessed at changing speeds. If you want to be safe on the road, you should keep a cool head. Therefore, the focus is also on the operation and the efficiency of the helmet ventilation.
Noticed positively and negatively
Caberg ego
Plus: Good fit, snug fit, no pressure points, comfortable lining; successful ratchet closure; good aerodynamics, is absolutely neutral; relatively low noise level; extremely good ventilation on the top of the head; practical visor locking, large field of view, very easy visor change; Sun visor easy to use; good suitability for glasses; satisfactory shock absorption values.
Minus: Narrow entry and exit; Chinstrap hinged a little far back (can press on the larynx if necessary); Chin part ventilation slider is very difficult to use, chin ventilation practically ineffective; The lower edge of the visor is still somewhat in the field of vision when the visor is completely open.
Givi 40.2 GT
Plus: Sun visor easy to use, but a bit too short; Chin part ventilation works (air may flow directly onto the eyes, however); practical visor ventilation position; very easy visor change (photo); still satisfactory shock absorption values.
Minus: Unsatisfactory fit, sits unbalanced, sometimes presses on forehead and temple; chinstrap too soft, difficult to thread and hinged far too far back; Ventilation at the top of the head barely noticeable; moderate aerodynamics, becomes very restless from 140 km / h, vibrates and wanders, restlessness even when looking sideways; high noise level, rumbling from the speed of a country road; Visor latching too soft, no visor safety device when completely closed, somewhat restricted field of vision to the side; hardly suitable for glasses.
Hero Brave
Plus: Comfortable entry and exit; tighter but still comfortable fit, comfortable lining, hardly any pressure points (possibly only minimally on the temple); decent aerodynamics (only minimal, hardly annoying vibrations over 160 km / h); Visor snaps well and closes tightly, practical ventilation position; Sun visor easy to use and correctly sized; satisfactory suitability for glasses; satisfactory shock absorption values; attractive price.
Minus: Chinstrap a bit far back; Visor lock can hardly be operated while driving; Chin section and upper head ventilation practically ineffective; quite high noise level in all speed ranges; Changing the visor a bit fiddly.
HJC IS-17
Plus: Excellent fit, tight fit, no pressure points; well balanced, overall good aerodynamics (only minimal impulse when looking sideways); very low noise level; easy-to-use and effective ventilation on the top of the head; good visor locking with exemplary locking, large field of vision, very easy visor change; Sun visor very easy to use and with a practical two-stage position; good suitability for glasses; very good shock absorption values.
Minus: Very narrow entry and exit; Chin part ventilation hardly noticeable; evaporates a little when new.
IXS HX 510
Plus: Relatively easy entry and exit; good fit, no pressure points; well positioned chinstrap and fastener; Visor with reliable locking, large field of vision and practical ventilation position, very easy visor change; Sun visor easy to use; attractive price.
Minus: Very sensitive to cross winds (looking sideways); Chin section and upper head ventilation with sliders that are too small and only weak function; high noise level from the start; Visor catch somewhat slack; only conditionally suitable for glasses (sun visor may be too tight); Sun visor may be a little too long (touches nose); exudes extremely unpleasant when new; moderate shock absorption values.
LS2 FF 396
Plus: Neat fit, relatively tight fit; well balanced, overall good aerodynamics (only slight restlessness over 160 km / h); effective ventilation of the head; Visor closes tightly and can be reliably locked; easy change of visor; good suitability for glasses.
Minus: Narrow entry and exit; Chin part ventilation without effect; high noise level, strong wind noises even from country road speed; Visor locking can only be set in three stages and is absolutely unrealistic, relatively narrow field of view; Sun visor operation very fiddly and difficult with thick gloves; unsatisfactory shock absorption values.

Plus: Neat fit, relatively tight fit; well balanced, overall good aerodynamics (only slight restlessness over 160 km / h); effective ventilation of the head; easy change of visor; good suitability for glasses (but only without the huge air deflector)
Minus: Narrow entry and exit; Chin part ventilation without effect; high noise level, strong wind noises even from country road speed; Visor operation from the closed position only possible with a lot of force, visor locking only in three stages and absolutely unrealistic, relatively narrow field of vision; Sun visor operation a bit fiddly and difficult with thick gloves; moderate shock absorption value.
Nexx XR1.R
Plus: Very easy entry and exit; very good fit, tight fit, very comfortable, pleasant lining; excellently balanced, very light to wear; impeccable aerodynamics; still satisfactory noise level; Effective upper head ventilation that is easy to use and effective despite the small lever; fully closing visor with practical ventilation position, extremely large field of vision, easy visor change; very good suitability for glasses; very good shock absorption values.
Minus: No sun visor; Chin part ventilation practically ineffective; Visor locking somewhat indifferent; big jump between size L and XL; ambitious price (from 4/2013).
Nolan N86
Plus: Neat fit, very tight fit in the cheek and chin area, possibly only minimal pressure on the temples, comfortable lining; very well positioned chinstrap and fastener; easy-to-use and effective ventilation on the top of the head; Visor locking and ventilation position practical; Sun visor easy to use; Bluetooth preparation; satisfactory suitability for glasses; satisfactory shock absorption values.
Minus: Extremely narrow entry and exit; Chin part ventilation without effect; slight aerodynamic weaknesses: some restlessness when driving straight ahead and very high speed, slight impulse when looking sideways; relatively high noise level; The visor is difficult to open from the closed position and it is awkward.
Probiker RSX5
Plus: Practical visor ventilation position; very easy visor change; easy sun visor operation with large lever; satisfactory suitability for glasses; satisfactory shock absorption values; price.
Minus: Extremely narrow entry and exit; Chinstrap and fastener mounted extremely far back; unsatisfactory fit, not a full, but much too undefined fit, possibly pressure points on forehead and back of the head, uncomfortable, very synthetic lining; Chin section and upper head ventilation practically ineffective; strong aerodynamic weaknesses: vibrates and wanders from country road speed, hardly permanently drivable above 180 km / h; extremely high noise level, whistling from low speed.
Rocc 520/521/522/523
Plus: Visor closes tightly and can be reliably locked, easy visor change; good suitability for glasses; attractive price.
Minus: Very narrow entry and exit; unsatisfactory fit, no homogeneous fit, possibly partial pressure points; Chin part and upper head ventilation without effect; Aerodynamic weaknesses: restlessness from 120 km / h, wanders, has buoyancy, impulse when looking sideways; high noise level, strong wind noises even from country road speed; Visor lock only in three stages and absolutely unrealistic, relatively narrow field of view; Sun visor operation very fiddly and difficult to do with thicker gloves; moderate shock absorption values.
Shark S 900 C
Plus: Comfortable entry and exit; very good fit, tight but comfortable fit, pleasant lining; still satisfactory aerodynamics (exception: from 120 km / h possibly vibrations), no hiking, no buoyancy; satisfactory noise level, wind noise present, but no rumbling or whistling; good ventilation on the top of the head and satisfactory chin section, helmet pleasantly ventilated; practical visor locking and ventilation position, extremely easy visor change; Sun visor easy to use; satisfactory suitability for glasses.
Minus: Sun visor may skin on nose; Cheek pad pump hardly noticeable and superfluous; moderate shock absorption values.
