As Harley’s CEO Jochen Zeitz, when he took office at the beginning of 2020, the subject mattered “Rewire” and announces the departure into new worlds, the consistency of the Pan America 1250 as an adventure bike is unimaginable. And yet the Americans are now breaking new ground: Harley-Davidson shows the Pan America 1250. Whether the new Pan America is the GS killer that no one expected from Harley remains to be seen. The first machines have now rolled off the production line.

152 hp from 1,247 cm³

With the Pan America 1250, Harley-Davidson ventures into the segment of large travel enduros. The Americans announce it as a modern adventure tourer and a multi-tool for tough use. The heart of the Pan America 1250 is the new liquid-cooled 60-degree V2 from the Revolution Max engine family with dry sump lubrication, four-valve technology and two overhead camshafts per cylinder. The sodium-filled valves are driven by rocker arms and hydraulic valve clearance compensation. In addition, the camshafts have variable timing. The technology for this works as a decompression system at start-up.

The new Revolution Max engine with 1,252 cubic meters, 152 hp and 128 Nm. A new development and supposedly also the new backbone of H-D.

Despite the V2, Harley gave the engine a 30-degree crank pin offset, which results in the firing order of a 90-degree V2. Harley coats the cylinders with nickel and silicon carbide and manufactures the valve and primary drive covers from a magnesium alloy. The pistons are made of forged light metal, knock sensors can adapt the double ignition to gasoline with lower octane ratings. For the first time at Harley, the engine is designed as a load-bearing part. The displacement of 1,252 cubic meters results from a bore of 105 millimeters per piston, which covers a stroke of 72 millimeters. Combined with the high compression of 13: 1, this results in 152 hp at 8,750 tours and 128 Nm at 6,750 revolutions per minute. This would put the Harley between a BMW R1250 GS and the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S. sort.

Combat prices for two versions

Harley-Davidson is launching the Pan America in two versions. Even the basic version comes with a fully adjustable chassis with 191 millimeters of spring travel at the front and rear, four-piston double disc brakes from Brembo at the front with 320 discs, five driving modes, cornering ABS and lean angle-sensitive traction control. Appropriately, it rolls on cast aluminum rims with Michelin Scorcher Adventure tires in the dimensions 120/70 R19 at the front and 170/60 R17 at the rear. With a 21.2 liter tank capacity and 245 kilos ready to drive, it is available in Germany from 15,995 euros. As standard it wears black, for an extra charge of 270 euros the Pan America 1250 comes in a brown-gray paint: River Rock Gray.

Special with thick equipment

The Pan America 1250 Special rolls out of the showroom for 2,000 euros more. The chassis is getting a proper upgrade with semi-active components from Showa, which can be expanded to include an adjustable chassis height for an additional 660 euros. The system lowers the vehicle when it comes to a stop so that the feet can stand up better; after starting, it returns to the optimal driving height, depending on the load and the spring preload setting. Harley is the first motorcycle manufacturer to install the system. The pithy paintwork in Baja Orange costs 600 euros extra, two other variants in gray and green each 270 euros. Aluminum wire spoke rims for tubeless tires can be ordered on top for 500 euros. The Special continues to show off with numerous goodies and technical upgrades compared to the standard: stable engine protection made of aluminum, protective bars, a steering damper, a brake pedal that can be adjusted without tools.

The Daymaker LED headlight with cornering light function is linked to the IMU for calculating the lean angle. Depending on the measured lean angle, up to three additional LED headlights illuminate the curve radius. The high beam works adaptively – it is controlled and not just switched on or off. All these systems weigh, however: The Special weighs 12 kilos more in the basic configuration. At 258 kilos ready to drive, it is still 10 kilos lighter than a 1250 GS Adventure. Point for Harley.

Facts about the new Pan America 1250

Despite the low weight of the new Pan America 1250, some dimensions of the Harley are striking. For example, the unbelievably long caster of 157 millimeters, which goes hand in hand with a 1,585 millimeter wheelbase. This has the very highest chopper level, even if they usually don’t have 191 millimeters of spring travel available. The first trip will clarify how this geometry feels.

The new 6.8-inch TFT display in the cockpit is interesting, as Harley specifies dynamic map navigation as equipment for the Special. How off-road it is will make a difference to the competition from Munich-Spandau, Mattighofen and Bologna.

Speaking of lean angle: Harley traditionally specifies the possible lean angle for just its motorcycles. However, no series-produced motorcycle from Milwaukee has reached values like 42 degrees. MOTORRAD will measure that.

Endless equipment

Harley has built a complete world of accessories around the new Pan America 1250. Including a set of aluminum cases from SW-Motech in Germany. 120 liters of luggage fit into the set of three with a top case. Various benches with different seat heights are also in the range, as are interchangeable handlebar risers.

With case systems and countless accessories, as well as its own clothing line with Rev’It, the Pan America is fully customizable.

Three versions of the Screamin’-Eagle-Street-Canon silencer made of titanium, stainless steel and carbon are available for the best sound. Also on offer: a high-flow air filter for easier cleaning after off-road use. Supplemented by a heat shield that should keep the heat off the driver’s leg. It fits both versions of the Pan America and the original exhaust. There are two types of windscreen that can be adapted to the wind. Each called the Adventure Windshield, there is a 11.4 centimeter shorter version or a 6.4 centimeter longer version in exchange for the standard screen.

Together with the clothing specialist Rev’it, Harley-Davidson has launched two complete textile collections. The jacket and trousers of the Passage line are lightweight versions with a membrane and removable thermal lining. The Grit collection is designed for year-round use: With a removable thermal lining and membrane, these pieces can be adapted to the weather very well. Of course, both lines come with level 2 protectors, are available in women’s and men’s cuts and can be combined with matching gloves and boots.

Together with Rev’it, Harley brings two clothing collections. Here is the easy passage line.

Harley also offers two different helmets. The passage comes as a light carbon version, the grit in polycarbonate. The folding adventure helmets can be retrofitted with the Harley-Davidson boom system.

Harley-Davidson specifies the maintenance intervals as 8,000 kilometers or once a year and grants a four-year guarantee in Germany. The new Pan America 1250 will be on sale from June 2021.

Conclusion

In terms of numbers, the Pan America is probably the most extraordinary Harley to date. If the Pan America 1250 brings the performance and possibilities on the road, uh, the gravel, the cards in this segment should be reshuffled.

In terms of price, the new off-road Harley is highly attractive, as it undercuts the top dogs with lots of equipment by a few euros.

Let’s just hope Harley-Davidson actually gets the Pan America sold. Not in a figurative sense, but at the point of sale: How do I get BMW customers into a Harley shop? I am excited.
