Two liter thick tuning engine with TÜV approval
Harley-Davidson Screamin ‘Eagle Street Glide put to the test
At the Harley dealer Bertl’s in Bamberg, there is the Screamin ‘Eagle tuning engine, which is almost two liters with TÜV approval. Read here what he does with a Street Glide.
Can you do that again? ”Photographer Jorg Kunstle excitedly muddles the stepladder out of the car, puts it on the street and begs for repetition. But sure, what don’t you do for a photo? I turn the Street Glide, chug back, and stand in position. Tension. Legs on the floor. Take a deep breath. Pull the clutch, click into gear. Bend forward slightly. Finished. Look over shoulder. Kunstle nods, everything is okay. Open the throttle, engage. The engine roars from its jeckill & Hyde silencers, and the rear tire whimpers, smears an angry autograph on the asphalt, catapults the 385 kilogram weight S.treet Glide spinning towards the horizon. With this inconspicuous tourer you can surprise everyone at the traffic lights, I think.
A few days earlier, test driver Georg Jelicic was also surprised: The tuned Street Glide completed the acceleration measurement from zero to 100 km / h in just 3.8 seconds, making it the second fastest Harley ever measured by MOTORRAD. Only the 60 kilogram lighter V-Rod Muscle was two tenths faster up to 100 km / h. By the way, a standard Street Glide needs 5.2 seconds for this acceleration. Just as surprised as Georg Jelicic was measurement technician Christian Vetter, who put the tuned Street Glide on the dynamometer: Bertl’s Baby pushed 123 hp at 6100 / min and 171 Newton meters of torque at 3800 / min. To put that into perspective: A Yamaha Vmax – not a child of sadness either – generates just 165 Newton meters of torque. The measured values alone would be worth reporting. But the real novelty is the fact that this engine, which has been available in the USA since summer 2010, can now also be legally driven in Germany.

Harley-Davidson Screamin ‘Eagle Street Glide put to the test
Speed up! Burnout with the Harley.
Back on the road. The photo production is in the can. Now it’s time to drive. In contrast to the Twin Cam 103 engine with 1690 cc that normally drives the Street Glide, the tuning engine doesn‘t like chugging around just above idle speed and sometimes chokes. The 120R engine is not recommended for those who love this extremely low-speed, tractor-like experience. When pulling through measurements in the last gear, the tuning engine does a little worse than its serial counterpart. The 120R engine only pushes excessively above 2000 rpm, and things really take off from 3500 rpm. It feels like a turbo is kicking in. The racing clutch installed as part of the tuning measures requires a well-trained left forearm compared to the series clutch. In order to get the extra power safely to the ground, Bertl’s mechanics installed a chassis from Wilbers. It is intended to curb the soft momentum of the touring bike as much as possible.
This also works to a certain extent. However, when the Street Glide is confronted with bumps or longitudinal grooves beyond 170 km / h, even the stiffer spring elements cannot control the life of the chassis. It wobbles and shakes. A touring Harley is not a sports motorcycle.
Despite this little faux pas: The two-liter engine is a lot of fun and especially on the country road or when driving on passes it can bring its full potential. However, the fun is not cheap: just for the bare 120R engine you have to put 6800 euros on the table. With all additional attachments, TÜV registration and working hours, a round sum of 10,000 euros can quickly come together. American exclusivity has never been cheap.
