Even on the narrow, loamy trails between the trees and on furrowed steep slopes, the new K60 kept what their rough profile promises. In the same way, trips through sand or coarse rubble, provided you have the appropriate driving technique, can be managed stress-free with the Ranger.

Driving report Heidenau K60 Ranger
New cleats from Heidenau
The K60 Scout is one of the most popular compromises that long-distance travelers pull on their bikes. The new K60 Ranger is supposed to take hold where the scout gets stuck.

With the manufacturer’s information “30 percent road and 70 percent terrain” the area of application of the Ranger is already described quite well. For comparison: With the K60 Scout, this ratio is around 60 percent road and 40 percent terrain. This conceptually moves the new K60 Ranger into the area of well-known and proven knobby tires, such as the veteran Continental TKC 80 or the Michelin Anakee Wild presented in 2016, which also do a lot off-road, but still function reasonably well on the road.
The new K60 Ranger
The K60 Ranger is also particularly intended for medium and heavy travel enduros, the dimensions presented cover the entire genre-typical range with 21 or 19 inches at the front and 18 or 17 inches at the rear. While the cross-country skier K60 Scout has a center bar on the rear tire, depending on the format, the profile of the K60 Ranger only differs in size-dependent nuances. The developers paid special attention to the profile, especially the transition between the profile base and the profile blocks. This, like the small crossbars between the middle and outer blocks, is intended to increase stability. The independent profile is also the result of a two-year development phase in which around 250,000 test kilometers were unwound.
Heidenau
The first contact
For the first presentation, Heidenau invited to a test drive on the grounds of the Enduro Action Team in Meltewitz. Here the tire was able to impressively demonstrate its wide range of uses. On BMW R 1250 GS it went on small country roads, cobblestones and dirt roads with coarse gravel. But mainly we moved in the nearby enduro area. With the dry gravel and sand tracks, the knobby tires were almost under-challenged, but the rain of the past few days left enough puddles and mud holes to be able to test the tires even in demanding passages. Even on the narrow, loamy trails between the trees and on furrowed steep slopes, the new K60 kept what their rough profile promises. In the same way, trips through sand or coarse rubble, provided you have the appropriate driving technique, can be managed stress-free with the Ranger. Which quickly made it clear that with these tires, too, the driver would be the limiting factor in most cases. There may be more suitable material for deep mud, extreme inclines or competition, but rally or cross tires cannot even begin to offer the safety or range that these gross stollers provide.

The Heidenau on the street
And thus to the second category, which is more important or less important depending on the perspective: the performance on paved paths. You quickly get used to the typical, somewhat heavier turn-in behavior, but the tires actually roll into the lean position without suddenly collapsing and give you enough confidence for longer connection stages. Due to their design, studded tires are a bit louder than smoother treads, and the Ranger is no exception. Still, there was no swaying or major unrest in the chassis. When it rains at the latest, it is always exciting with studded tires, in the case of the K60 Ranger we unfortunately had to rely on the statements of the technicians due to the weather: The high silica content should not impair driving safety in wet conditions. An area in which at least the K60 Scout has a good reputation. Further tests and customer experience will have to show how the new tire performs under different conditions and especially in comparison to the competition.
The dimensions of the Heidenau K60 Ranger
Heidenau offers the new K60 Ranger in nine common dimensions. The three sizes for use on the front wheel are:
- 110/80 B 19
- 120/70 B 19
- 90 / 90-21
These dimensions are available for the rear wheel:
- 130 / 80-17
- 140 / 80-17
- 150/70 B 17
- 170/60 B 17
- 140/80 -18
- 150/70 B 17
Mileage decreases
But it is already clear that the Ranger cannot achieve the almost legendary five-digit mileage of the Scout. The developers estimate that the tunnels should last between 3000 and 6000 kilometers, depending on the motorcycle and rider. This means that the tire is absolutely in the range of what you can expect from a 30/70 tire. The tire plant in Heidenau will start accepting orders from August 2021, but delivery is only planned for the first quarter of 2022. In terms of price, the tires should be a little lower than the K 60 Scout. The production takes place exclusively in Germany.

What brand of tires do you drive?
Voted 1873 times
Pirelli, what else.
Metzeler, of course.
Always Michelin.
Conti, that fits.
Dunlop, are the best
Avon, they’re good.
Bridgestone, it couldn’t be better.
Vredestein, something new.
Maxxis, they are great.
Kenda, great off-road skins
Heidenau, they take me everywhere
Mitas, they convince me.
Conclusion
With the K60 Ranger, the German manufacturer closes the gap between the K60 Scout and the competitive knobby tires. In the first contact, the ranger was able to convince across the board and is recommended for trips with a high proportion of off-road vehicles. Or for everyone who wants to ride a tire on their travel enduro that is just as versatile as the motorcycle.
