In this country, where motorcycles are now often pure hobby vehicles or lifestyle transporters with horsepower numbers well into the three-digit range, motorcycles like the new Honda CB 125 F have a real problem of acceptance. With just 10.6 hp and tires the size of better mountain bikes, the big appearance in front of the ice cream parlor is canceled, and even among the younger generation, who is the actual target group, enthusiasm for the previously rather staid appearance is limited. So why is Honda building the CB 125 the way it is?

Because it’s a damn successful motorcycle

According to Honda, over 3.4 million units have been sold since the first CB 125 appeared in 1964. Makes an average of almost 70,000 per annum. Honda plans to sell exactly one percent, namely 700 pieces, to the utility-oriented biker in Germany this year. And that brings us to the essence of the Honda CB 125 F.

In the Asian mass markets, motorcycles have to be cheap to buy and maintain, functional and reliable in order to be successful. The half-disguised predecessor Honda CBF 125 was able to score well in these chapters, but Honda saw reason for a comprehensive revision.

Ranges of a good 600 kilometers

In the newly designed tubular steel frame, wheels with a diameter of 18 instead of 17 inches rotate for better driving stability on poor roads. The air-cooled two-valve injector looks very similar to its predecessor, but now has a balancer shaft. Further detailed work should ensure even greater economy. Honda promises consumption below two liters, which should be achievable in practice. In combination with the 13-liter tank, the Honda CB 125 F enables ranges of a good 600 kilometers.

On the other hand, the performance of the Honda CB 125 F fell from 11.3 to an even more modest 10.6 hp compared to its predecessor. This is passed on to the skinny rear wheel via a five-speed gearbox that can be shifted easily but only moderately precisely. In inner-city traffic you can live with the resulting driving dynamics, provided you keep the engine bravely at speed. Outside of built-up areas it will soon be tough, because above around 70 km / h a gradient or placing your chin on the fuel filler cap is extremely helpful for further increasing speed.

The Honda CB 125 F rides almost like a bicycle

In an upright sitting position, the 130-kilogram Honda CB 125 F rides almost like the much-touted bicycle. Turning in and changing lean angles are child’s play by hand or from the chrome-plated tubular handlebar. In front of it is a completely analog cockpit, which is very easy to read and even has a gear indicator, but is unfortunately not only timeless in design. The braking system, even with a drum at the rear, is also free of electronics, there is no ABS. Apart from that, the system does its job unobtrusively, but it doesn’t have to convert too much kinetic energy into heat anyway.

Overall, Honda has managed to hide the undoubtedly existing cost pressure. All visible metal and plastic parts as well as the paintwork make a valuable impression, only the one-piece, only black painted exhaust looks really cheap. Nevertheless, the Honda CB 125 F, which is now available for 2775 euros in blue, yellow, red and white, is certainly worth considering for pragmatic motorcyclists.
