Consortium for replacement batteries
Manufacturers are pooling their strengths on the way to the mass market electric two-wheeler. A new consortium is taking care of a standardized battery exchange system.

The two-wheel manufacturers Honda, Yamaha, KTM and Piaggio have signed a letter of intent to set up a consortium for replaceable batteries for motorcycles and light electric vehicles.
Define standard battery
In the context of the Paris Climate Agreement and the transition to electric mobility, the founding members of the consortium believe that the availability of a standardized replaceable battery system will both promote the widespread use of light electric vehicles and contribute to more sustainable life cycle management of batteries used in transport.
By extending ranges, shortening charging times and reducing vehicle and infrastructure costs, manufacturers will try to respond to the main concerns of customers about the future of electromobility.
More partners welcome
The aim of the consortium is to define the standardized technical specifications of the replaceable battery system for category L vehicles (motorcycles, light electric vehicles, quads and trikes). The founding members of the consortium will help shape international technical standards through close cooperation with relevant interest groups and national, European and international standardization bodies..
The consortium will start its activities in May 2021. The four founding members encourage all interested stakeholders to join the company to enrich the consortium’s expertise.
The founding members represent the brands Honda, KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas, Yamaha, Piaggio, Vespa, Moto Guzzi and Aprilia.
