This is how a wheelie works
Jahn
Always keep your right foot over the brake pedal when doing a wheelie.
The most important thing when wheeling is our lifeline, the foot brake. So always, always, always keep your right foot over the brake pedal. Wheelies work best with torque and not with peak power, because the engine reacts more gently to gas commands at the lower speeds. For most machines, a starting speed of between 30 and 50 km / h in first gear is ideal. Now bend your upper body slightly forward, staying relaxed. Then take off the gas completely, the fork compresses a little. Now slowly accelerate and pull lightly (!) On the handlebars. The rebound fork supports an emerging front wheel. If it shoots into the sky too abruptly, step on the footbrake. It is best to practice the trick with the foot brake so that the reflex is in place in the event of a fall. In addition, with a little practice, you can balance the machine nicely on the rear wheel with the interplay of gas and brakes.
If the front does not rise, go back to point two and start the process with a little more gas or a stronger pull on the handlebars. If that doesn’t work either, use the clutch. You drive at the said speed again, take your foot off the gas and pull the clutch. Now step on the gas again, the engine revs up. Now engage the clutch quickly. But be careful: if the speed is too high, there is a risk of a backward somersault. On the other hand, if the speed drops too much, the front wheel stays on the ground.
Basically, it is better to accelerate a few times too little than once too much! The right dose between gas, clutch and pulling the handlebars requires a little practice. If the front wheel climbs in a controlled manner, hold the throttle position until the front wheel drops again. The first “Schnapperle” is done. Now practice this process vigorously until you get a feel for the unicycle dance. In order to turn the “snapperle” into a real wheelie, and for as long as possible, wheelie pilots have to control the stunt using the throttle grip. The steeper the bike, the longer the nose stays up. Wheelies work best close to the tipping point. This is the zero position where the bike is perfectly balanced on the rear wheel. The further you open the gas, the steeper or faster the wheelie will be. To end the stunt, slowly close the throttle to make the landing as soft as possible and to protect the steering head bearing. Wheelies are best practiced uphill to minimize the likelihood of rollover backwards.
That’s how a stoppie works
Jahn
In contrast to the wheelie, with a stoppie you are absolutely powerless if the tipping point is exceeded!
Stoppies are basically reverse wheelies. Some professionals therefore also call this stunt nose wheelie. The problems: You can’t control this stunt with the accelerator, and the lifeline “footbrake” also falls flat. Before the stoppie pilot starts the exercise, he must ensure that the surface is level and clean. On cool days, the front tire also needs some hard braking to build up grip. Then deactivate the system on ABS bikes, ideally using the corresponding switch. If not available, pull the fuse or unscrew the sensor on the wheel rim.
The first thing the stoppie pilot has to do is develop a feel for the front brake. To do this, you accelerate to around 30 to 40 km / h in first gear and stretch your arms wide. Then disengage and pull lightly on the brake lever so that the pads are in contact with the discs. Now gently increase the brake pressure so that the tire can mesh with the asphalt. This also gives our personal central computer more time to distinguish a rising rear from a blocking front wheel. Now pull a little harder and at the same time shift your body weight towards the front to put more pressure on the front wheel. The arms remain almost straight. If the rear wheel lifts slightly, the first (mini) stoppie is done! Repeat this game until you get a feel for the rising tail. If the front wheel locks, quickly release the brake! Then repeat the exercise with a little less brake pressure.
As with all tricky maneuvers, you have to slowly approach stoppies. This increases concentration, sharpens the senses and increases reflexes. The fine art is to balance the bike close to the tipping point. But be careful: In contrast to wheelies, you are absolutely powerless if this point is exceeded! To a certain extent, you can prevent a rollover forwards by shifting your weight further back when the machine is climbing too steeply. Tip: Stoppies work best downhill because, firstly, the rear wheel lifts off more easily and, secondly, if there is a danger of a somersault, the bike picks up speed again as soon as the pilot releases the brake. This sinks the stern subito back to the ground.
We come to the “real” stoppies with higher speed, in which experienced pilots easily balance 50 meters on the front wheel at a correspondingly high starting speed. For beginners, four or five meters are a real achievement. To do this, accelerate to around 70 km / h. Now gently apply the brake as usual and load the front wheel by shifting your weight and applying the appropriate brake pressure until the rear lifts off. Now vary the pressure so that the bike neither does the forward somersault nor does the rear bang back on the ground.
This is how a donut works
Jahn
In contrast to the circular burnout, the donut is carried out completely while driving
The supreme discipline of making fun is the black rubber ring, also known as the donut. Please do not confuse this with the circular burnout that village youths love to burn into the asphalt on remote streets. The subtle difference between circular burnouts and donuts is easy to explain, but made difficult: With burnout, the pilot stands on the ground, blocks the front wheel with the brake and turns the bike once around this fixed point with the rotating rear wheel – and the ring is done. The donut, on the other hand, is completely moving, i.e. in a permanent slide.
Let’s start with the hardware. The more tail-heavy the machine (extreme example: chopper), the less suitable it is for donut baking. Reason: You don’t get the necessary pressure on the front wheel. Hypersport tires are also unsuitable, at least for beginners, because these rubbers build up too much grip when they get hot. Older touring tires, on the other hand, are perfect for burning. Ideal: put on a rubber with a lot of grip at the front and one with little grip at the back. A high rear tire pressure (around five bar) also simplifies the show.
And this is how it works: In first gear, roll at walking pace, stand loosely in the notches and lean over the tank. Now the rear wheel is put into slip by several actions taking place at the same time: Pull the front brake to put pressure on the front wheel and relieve the rear wheel. At the same time, disengage the clutch and carefully engage it again (let the clutch slip a bit), accelerate and continue to brake at the same time. This is the critical moment because if the front tire does not build up enough grip or there is too little pressure on the front, the front wheel locks – risk of falling! In this case, release the brake immediately, take off the gas and try the whole thing again with more weight on the front wheel and a little more speed. It is also possible to put one leg on the floor when the machine is at a standstill. Then let the rear wheel spin, carefully get on and release the brake so that the load rolls off slowly.
Once you’ve done that, first drive straight ahead at walking pace for a while to get a feel for the motorcycle. Then initiate the turning movement with a steering impulse and simultaneous pressure on the leg. At first you should choose a large radius, this simplifies the action. The fine art of circular baking consists in controlling the rotation and drawing ever tighter circles. When the rear wheel rotates, the temperature of the rubber rises, giving it too much grip. If there is too much grip, increase the speed a little or stop the exercise and let the rubber cool down. Incorrect shifting of weight can also result in too much grip at the rear. Therefore, you should always make sure to keep your upper body above the tank. The iron rule also applies to donuts: I burn where I look!

There are professionals and “wannabes”. The latter usually fail due to physics, see crash photos. In the interview, Chris “Pfiff” Pfeiffer gives insights into the stunt scene.
Red Bull Content Pool
With four titles each in the World Championships and four European Championships, the German Chris Pfeiffer is the most successful stunt riding pilot in the last ten years.
What is the correct name of the sport: Freestyle? Stunt riding? Motorcycle acrobatics?
Stunt riding. The guys and gals who run it are called stunters. We active people don’t like the term very much because we don’t do film stunts or anything like that. A few years ago I wanted to introduce the term “street bike freestyle”, but that didn’t catch on.
In 2010 you took part in a competition for the last time. Why not since then?
Unlike in the past, such competitions no longer have a rating. There is also no association that coordinates and organizes the whole thing. The competitions, which are mostly organized from Poland, are mainly young drivers who want to become known and want to make a name for themselves.
Who invented stunt riding? And when?
People who perform tricks have been around forever. But at the beginning of the nineties, the Brazilian AC Farias took the basically wild spectacle to a new level. This also made the sport interesting for the general public. Personally, I’ve performed in 93 countries so far. I also drove shows in Formula 1 or the “Race of Champions”. Therefore I was able to contribute to the reputation of the sport.
How is the stunt riding scene developing in general??
New, increasingly attractive tricks and good young drivers keep the scene extremely lively. The level is particularly high in France. Fortunately, public interest is also growing steadily.
Which of your colleagues do you rate the most?
As I said, there are a lot of excellent drivers. One of my favorites is currently the Pole Rafal Pasierbek alias Stunter 13.
How is stunt riding organized? Is there a central organ??
Unfortunately, no. Many stunters exchange information via Facebook, but ultimately everyone does their own thing. It is therefore difficult for outsiders to get information such as event dates.

Stunt legend Evel Knievel
As a stunt driver in the original sense, Robert Craig “Evel” Knievel thrilled the masses between 1965 and 1975. He became famous mainly because of his insane jumps, in which he was repeatedly seriously injured – a total of 38 times. The most violent take-off happened when trying to jump over the fountain of the “Caesars Palace” in Las Vegas. 40 broken bones and 29 days in a coma were the result. When he tried to jump over 13 buses in London, he crashed again. He announced his resignation during the event.
