Insect removers and paint polishes for motorcycles in the test
16 insect removers and paint polishes in the test
Wrong cleaning products, bad consequences
Bring the motorcycle to a shine? Watch out! Wrong cleaning products can have bad consequences. Ten insect removers and six paint polishes have to show what they can do in the MOTORRAD test.

Actually, the orgy of motorcycle cleaning has never been as easy as it is today. The detergent industry has really turned up in the last few years: every year it mixes powerful universal weapons that only have to be fired at the motorcycle using the integrated spray gun. Then an espresso waiting time is usually enough, rinse off, done. Is it really that simple? The answer is definitely in radio Yerevan format: In principle, yes, but … Before a new cleaner is ready for the market, heads smoke in the manufacturers’ chemical laboratories. Getting something really clean isn’t the real art. The secret is to make it absolutely user-friendly – one could better say: foolproof.

Let’s take a look at a modern motorcycle. For the trusted chemist, the sheer horror: painted sheet metal, brushed aluminum, carbon parts, various types of rubber, various plastics – whether colored, clear polished or painted. Now Mr. Weibkittel could do his job quite easily and add umpteen exclusion notices to the label of his cleaner in the small print. What would the result be? Nobody reads it. And if it does, it will still be done wrong. It is therefore important for the manufacturer to reduce the potential risk of interactions as much as possible. In addition, it should of course also be environmentally friendly – so that neither mum’s front yard is mysteriously lost nor the cleaning master’s skin suddenly shows strange stains.
Really read the label!
Before we get to work on the following pages with the tested cleaners and polishes, a few basic points on the subject of “caring for your motorcycle properly”. First priority: REALLY READ THE LABEL! Of course, there is usually a “universal” or “simple application” in large letters on the container. Nevertheless, the small print reveals that the mixture should not be used in the blazing sun or on hot paintwork. There is also information on the exposure times. If the product contains a high proportion of solvents, there is a risk of so-called stress corrosion cracking. Polycarbonate, which is used for windshields or indicator glasses, for example, is particularly susceptible. Anyone who works with a lot of (clear!) Water ensures that the care products applied are rinsed off with as little residue as possible. From that point of view it all sounds very simple, doesn’t it?
The greatest foster sins
That’ll go away again! Mom’s consolation from childhood may still have worked with an open knee. But anyone who messes with the motorcycle cleaning service risks scuffs and scratches that will hurt forever. It starts with a harmless wash: Wrong brush or sponge (keyword: Glitzi), and rough scratches adorn painted surfaces, clear windshields or bare metal. Even for little money there are washing gloves or microfiber sponges (e.g. Nigrin or Sonax, around 6 euros), which, with the long pile side, can be used particularly gently on lacquered surfaces. Also wrong: the “everything in the bucket” strategy. It looks like the water, cleaner and sponge always end up in the same bucket. Of course, more and more of the washed-off dirt, which then sticks to the sponge like sandpaper. Effect as above: scratches!
Suggestion: a second bucket with clear water to rinse out. Before starting the finish, you should really be sure which surfaces are being treated. Much of what looks identical on a motorcycle is often made of different materials. For example, finely shining mirror or turn signal housings – is it actually chromed metal or is it more like veneered plastic? Anyone who goes to work with a metal polish without a thorough examination will quickly go to the bottom with plastic! While clouds or streaks of polish on paintwork can be laboriously worked out again, you don’t have to make any efforts on solid-colored plastic parts (e.g. fairing keel, fenders or rear wheel cover). These spots remain! Which is why saturated polishing cloths should not be used on paints or plastics (risk of scratching or staining).
Finally, the question: polishing cotton, terry towel or T-shirt for the fine work? Neither: The best results can be achieved with microfiber cloths or polishing fleece specially structured for vehicle care (e.g. for Polo or Louis between five and seven euros).
This is how MOTORRAD tests
It is often said that the original Swabians like to clean meticulously. Which may have the consequence that the cleaning professionals are sitting at the gates of Stuttgart – the Karcher company from Winnenden. In the laboratory (certified according to DIN / ISO 9001/14 000, of course), graduate chemist Frank Ritscher is the ruler of various high-tech devices with which even the most mysterious miracle cure can be broken down into its (possibly profane) components. The method of assessing the cleaning performance by means of a precisely defined test dirt application or the efficiency of polishes by measuring the degree of gloss is also incorruptible. Together with our sister magazine auto motor und sport, all test products were purchased from specialist retailers and web shops in order to then examine their effectiveness in laboratory and practical tests.

No question – the fly cemetery, which covers the motorcycle front and usually also the helmet after a summer trip, should be cleaned down again as soon as possible. Because the mixture of protein and chitin can literally burn itself into the clear coat. Of course, every experienced motorcyclist has already been able to successfully fight the fly front with some household or secret remedies – with plenty of water, enough soaking time, with kitchen or hand towels (no newspaper, it usually leaves stains!) And a few drops of washing up liquid can usually produce good results achieve. Special insect sponges also help against the glut of insects – but some specimens can leave unsightly scratches.
What can cleaners specially designed for removing insects do better? Ideally, the soiled surfaces are easier to clean, as they neither attack the different surfaces and materials (paint, rubber, polycarbonate) nor the skin (e.g. corrosive effect due to an excessively high pH value). Incidentally, no test participant fails at the latter point. Basically, however, all cleaning agents must be rinsed off thoroughly with plenty of water after the prescribed exposure time and washing in order to avoid visible damage to the material (e.g. stress cracks, embrittlement).
Conclusion
Wipe & path? It doesn’t work 100 percent with any means. Michelin’s insect remover creates the best effect, closely followed by the inexpensive Sonax insect star. Dr. Wack is easy to apply and scores with its high yield.

After a thorough motorcycle wash, let’s get to the freestyle, the fine paintwork polish. The range of products is huge in specialist shops or on various home shopping channels, which is why we have concentrated in this test on the agents that, according to the label, have a sealing effect. In other words: The paint should shine again in the eye of the beholder in one operation. At the same time, these two-in-one polishes promise through z. B. waxy substances that the shine lasts longer, water rolls off more easily and new dirt is more difficult to adhere.
In the first step, the polishes must show whether they can conjure up a new shine on the garage at all. When applying to old, weathered paintwork, it’s time to get down to business: work on for 30 seconds, then polish off. Basically, this exercise is about smoothing the paint and filling in the smallest of indentations. The decisive factor here is the grain size of the abrasive bodies contained in the agents. What does the trained eye say after the first action? All the same! Or not? A clear case, a gloss level measuring device must provide certainty here.
The products from Sonax, Nanoplast and MacBrite now shine at the top. But that’s not all. Crucial question: How long does the paint keep shining? In order to simulate a constant “load”, we mark certain paint surfaces on a car with a colored pencil and then seal them with the polish. Then it goes to the car wash. Here a master craftsman looks stupid out of the laundry. The nanoplastic marking is gone after just one pass, MacBrite manages two more passes. The results of Sonax, Liqui Moly and Dr. Wack: The paint seal was only cracked after eight wash loads.
Conclusion
Shine for as long as possible: In the test, Sonax coped with this job best. But that costs: You pay almost 15 euros for the 500 ml bottle. Those who use Liqui Moly, on the other hand, shine at the checkout: great finish at half the price! Just behind the doctor from Ingolstadt: Wack is productive, but the most expensive drug in the test.
