Once again, the weather on Thursday leads to the final cancellation of the second supersport race.
On Friday the time had come, the premier class was on. The senior TT and the weather gods had an understanding, and the island shone in the sunshine.
It started with the electric motorcycles, with a two-hour delay because parts of the route were still damp.
The two Japanese Mugen factory motorcycles dominated here and gave the popular TV star Guy Martin an easy second place and thus his only podium place this year. The winner was New Zealander Bruce Anstey, who stood in for the injured John McGuinness. Third was Daley Mathison, from the University of Nottingham. But overall it has to be said that the emission-free class with its starting field of only 8 motorcycles (!) Met with little interest.
This was followed by the second sidecar race of this year’s TT. The brothers Ben and Tom Birchall dominated the race from the start and won it with ease. Second place went to John Holden, almost half a minute behind & Lee Cain. Even further back in third place were Conrad Harrison, Dean Harrison’s father, and Andrew Winkle. The German Mike Roscher with his “Lubricant Max”, Ben Hughes, took an impressive 13th place.
And then the time had finally come, the Pokerstar Senior TT was on. This six-lap race crowns the racing week and every driver dreams of winning it once. Once again everyone was waiting for the duel between Dunlop and Hutchinson.
Honda had withdrawn from the start with their new Fireblade and the entire appearance of Honda can probably be seen as a disgrace. Officially, there was talk of insufficient training laps, but in reality it is probably the electronics problems that Honda has not yet got under control.
Norton and his driver, the Australian David Johnson, had the honor of opening the race. After the first lap, Peter Hickman was in the lead, closely followed by Ian Hutchinson. In the following round, the two fought a duel with alternating leadership. Michael Dunlop was beaten in 5th place, more than 6 seconds behind! Then the message came from the bungalow, “Ian Hutchinson is missing” and shortly thereafter the race was per “Red flag” stopped.
After anxious minutes it was certain that Hutchy had crashed at the 27th Milestone. After further anxiety, it was finally clear that he was conscious and not life-threateningly injured! The result of the fall was a fracture of the thigh on his left leg, which had already been badly damaged in the fall in 2010. All in all, he may crash after this one “a pretty lucky man” being.
After the restart, Michael Dunlop took the lead straight away. He had benefited from the cancellation of the race and the team was able to make the appropriate improvements to his motorcycle. In places two to five were Peter Hickman, Bruce Anstey, Dean Harrison and Michael Rutter after the first round. Finally, Michael Dunlop made it on his new GSX-R1000 and gave Suzuki 1st place and thus his 15th TT victory.
His fifth podium place in a week was achieved by Peter Hickman in second place. Dean Harrison on Kawaski was third.
Manxman Dean Kneen, BMW in the Penz13 team came in 12th. The team around Ricko Penzkofer had certainly hoped for another podium after the 3rd podium in the Superstock Bikes.
The Austrian Horst Saiger took 18th place, he too had benefited from the break in the race, because he had crashed on the first lap at Gooseneck and was thus able to start again. Joshua Brookes’ and David (Davo) Johnson’s two Norten bikes took excellent sixth and seventh places.
This is the end of a beautiful and at the same time emotional TT 2017.
June 9, 2017: Supersport, sidecar and Superstock
Heavy rains are causing delays in the Tourist Trophy. On Monday, the race in the super sports class took place two hours late. After Ian Hutchinson won the Superbike TT, interest focused again on the duel between him and Michael Dunlop.
At the beginning of the race, the Englishman James Hillier was able to take the lead; Dunlop caught up at halftime and was finally able to take a dominant win. James Hillier came in second, Peter Hickmann third. Ian Hutchinson took fifth place, which was certainly disappointing for him. After his fall in the Superbike race on Sunday, Guy Martin was unable to compete.
The brothers Tom and Ben Birchall won the subsequent race of the teams; With 117.1 miles per hour they set a new lap record. Mike Roscher from Germany only achieved 19th place with his co-pilot Ben Hughes.
Due to the weather, the race and training laps scheduled for Tuesday had to be canceled. The races could continue on Wednesday.
Ian Hutchinson clinched victory in the Quantum Superstock TT Race on Wednesday. Horst Saiger from Austria reached 10th place and once again demonstrated his strength as the best private driver.
The subsequent Bennett’s Lightweight Race was won by Michael Rutter; for Rutter, who has been taking part in the Tourist Trophy since 1994, this represents the 5th TT victory. Martin Jessopp and Peter Hickman were also on the podium. With four podium places in four races, Hickmann delivers a remarkable record at this year’s Tourist Trophy.
There were two serious accidents on Wednesday. The drivers Jochem van den Hoek from Holland and Alan Bonner from Ireland were killed here. The day before, the British Davey Lambert had succumbed to his injuries. This means that the number of fatal accidents, even for the Tourist Trophy, which is considered the most dangerous motorcycle race in the world, is above average.
Due to renewed rainfall, no races could be run on Thursday.
June 6, 2017: End of the rainy season
Due to the bad weather conditions, there were further delays in the schedule in the second half of the week. The planned practice rounds on Thursday and Friday were canceled. The entire program for the current week had to be changed. Days free of racing or training, as is usual, are no longer planned.
The superbike and sidecar race scheduled for Saturday has been postponed in favor of training. Despite the bright sunshine, there were three long interruptions. Lee Johnston crashed spectacularly at Greeba, but got off relatively lightly. Rico Penzkofer’s Penz13 team, which was able to achieve first place in the Superstock qualification on Wednesday, was also affected: Danny Webb fell at Laurel Bank – he did not suffer any major damage either. Bjorn Gunnarsson, the Swede who rides in the same team as Julian Trummer, was also affected by a fall. Like all other falls that led to interruptions, this one was also relatively mild.
The starting flag for the first race of this year’s TT fell punctually at 2 p.m. on Sunday: the Superbike race. It was opened by the Norton driver David “Davo” Johnson. Ian followed “Hutchy” Hutchinson with starting number 4 and Michael Dunlop with starting number 6. The duel between the two favorites was eagerly awaited. But it did not get to that. The 13-time TT winner Dunlop dropped out in the third lap due to a technical defect.
Nevertheless, the race did not lose any of its tension. A duel broke out between “Hutchy”, Peter Hickman, James Hillier and Dean Harrison. Hutchinson could only narrowly win this on his Tyco-BMW. He took his 15th TT victory and moved to fourth place on the list of winners in the history of the race, ahead of Mike Hailwood, who won the Tourist Trophy a total of 14 times.
Dan Kneen from the Penn13 team won an excellent 5th place. Horst Saiger from Lichtenstein was the first private rider to finish 11th, his best result in a superbike race to date.
Guy Martin caused terrible news when he fell at Doran’s Bend. Fortunately, except for a bruise on his arm, he was uninjured. For Martin, who had declared his road racer career over after an accident in 2015, this year’s Tourist Trophy marks the return to work. In the subsequent interview, Martin explained that the Honda does not like him and John McGuinness. Because of a fall, the 23-time Tourist Trophy winner cannot take part in this year’s race.
May 31, 2017: First trainings
The waiting is over. After Saturday and Monday training had to be canceled due to bad weather, the time had come on Tuesday at 6:20 p.m. local time: In its 110th year, the Tourist Trophy could officially begin.
The newcomers in the solo class and sidecar started first. The expected duel between Ian Hutchinson and Michael Dunlop was already evident in the first training session. In both the Superbike and Supersport classes, Ian Hutchinson was ahead of Michael Dunlop after training.
The Penz13 team of Rico Penzkofer from Germany took the fantastic first place in the Superstock class with Dean Kneen and his BMW.
The 44-year-old veteran Michael Rutter dominated the lightweight class.
Host Saiger placed 17th in Supersports and 16th in Superstocks.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go so well for his compatriot Julian Trummer, he had to throw in the towel on the first lap due to electronic problems. He was really looking forward to getting back on his bike after a long wait.
Manxman Dave Molyneux and his co-driver Daniel Sayle dominated the sidecar once again.
May 15, 2017: preliminary report
A new big adventure will begin in a few days: the Tourist Trophy 2017 on the Isle of Man.
Unfortunately, John McGuinness, 23-time TT winner, fanatic and one of the favorites, cannot start. He fell badly last weekend on the NorthWest 200.
So there are many indications of a great duel: Michael Dunlop, who has 13 TT victories and holds the lap record (average speed: 133.962 mph / 215,591 km / h), against 14-time TT winner Ian Hutchinson. Hutchinson starts on Tyco-BMW, Dunlop on the new Bennetts-Suzuki in the Big Bikes on the Isle of Man.
Other drivers also want to have a say in the Tourist Trophy. Guy Martin’s re-entry is a sensation: after his accident at the 2015 Ulster GP, he declared his road racing career over. The charismatic Brit could not resist the offer from Honda – with the prospect of winning the TT victory that has been longed for for years. To date he has been on the podium 16 times, but never at the top.
Other hot favorites for the top places are New Zealander Bruce Anstey on his Honda RC213V-S, Conor Cummins (Honda), Dean Harrison (Kawasaki), Peter Hickman (BMW), James Hillier (Kawasaki), Gary Johnson (Suzuki), Lee Johnston (Honda), Ivan Lintin (Kawasaki) and Michael Rutter (BMW).
The German-speaking area is represented on the Isle of Man by the Austrians Horst Saiger (Kawasaki) and Rico, who live in Liechtenstein “Penz” Penzkofer. In his team “Penz13” start the Manxman Dan Kneen, the English Danny Webb and the Italian Alessandro Polita.
The 26-year-old Julian Trummer from southern Styria starts as a newcomer at the TT, who finished second in the Newcomer A-Class at the Manx Grand Prix last year. Trummer enters the super sport class with the number 62 on a Honda CBR 600 RR in the TC Racing / DP Coldplaning Team.
The Australian David “Davo” Johnston starts in the Big Bikes with starting number 1 on the beautiful Norton. For the British, who are in love with tradition, this is a special highlight of the Tourist Trophy. He is supported by the British Superbike champion Josh Brookes on the second factory Norton.
The team races are a fixture on the Isle of Man. The Birchall brothers, who have won four races in the past three years, have great chances of winning.
Other teams to watch out for are Dave Molyneux (17 TT wins) and his co-driver Dan Sayle, John Holden / Lee Kain, Conrad Harrison / Andy Winkle, Peter Founds / Jevan Walmsley, Alan Founds / Jake Lowther and the 5-time world champion Tim Reeves / Mark Wilkes in Klaus’ Honda team “Gap” Klaffenbock. The Austrian has won the TT three times himself, was World Team Champion in 2001 and now lives mostly on the Isle of Man.
