The small Janus Company from Goshen, Indiana in the USA builds new motorcycles that look very old using old technology. A new 450 with SWM engine.

  • Motors from China
  • So far only 250
  • Conclusion

The namesake of the small manufacturer is Janus, the Roman god of the beginning and the end. The famous Janus head fits perfectly on these lines: The author doesn’t know where to begin or where it will end.

It starts and ends with the price

Janus would like to have the equivalent of 11,147.96 euros for his recently leaked Halycon 450 and that could end this story again. The background to this handmade gentlemen’s motorcycle with the look of the golden 1920s and equipped with a Honda engine from China offers space for one or two additional paragraphs.

Handcrafted in Indiana

Janus builds simple, beautiful machines that are a joy to own and drive. This is how the young team from Indiana introduces itself. The Janus makers proudly tell of the loving production and relationship they have with each of their motorcycles. After this advertising block, things get interesting: Janus explains exactly where they get the components for their four models from. All optical features that make you beautiful are made in-house. Including the partially unsprung frame, the characteristic tanks, the unique front suspension, as well as the complete wiring and the exhaust system. The individual disc brakes as well as the handlebars along with the cockpit and control units come from other parts of the USA.

Motors from China

The 250 stews used come from China, as does the now leaked engine of the 450 Halycon. It’s from us SWM models with 440 cubic known and, as the Euro 5 version, is currently allowed to draw 27 hp at 5,550 rpm and 36 Nm at 4,750 rpm. Perhaps the US version will still be able to compete with 30 or more horses like in Euro 4 times.

So far only 250

So far, Janus has built three models based on the 250 stew with 14 hp. The Halycon is the most classic model, nostalgic with a rigid frame and spring saddle, as well as the long, attached tank. The single-seater can be expanded to a two-seater by means of a luggage rack and a simple seat pad or a screwed-on saddle. Possibilities that the new 450 Halycon will also offer. The other two models are called Gryfin and Phoenix 250, and although they also hang the front wheel with a swing arm, they enjoy a swing arm with stereo struts in the rear. The Gryfin is a scrambler, the Phoenix wants to be a cafe racer. It remains to be seen whether Janus will also screw the big single into the tubular frame early on.

Conclusion

The Janus Halycon is wonderfully anachronistic: The concept doesn’t fit into our motorcycle era at all and therefore it works best. Real craftsmanship with the relevant components costs and drives the price of a weak 450 in the areas of modern touring athletes with all the bells and whistles.

The old Honda single as a China license replica distorts the harmonious picture in all corners.
