KTM used the home GP in Austria to announce some strategic changes for the future. In addition to separating from MotoGP works driver Johann Zarco, the Austrians have announced their departure from Moto2. From 2020 there will be no more KTM motorcycles in Moto2. The own Moto2 chassis also pulls KTM back at the end of the season. The collaboration with Aki Ajo should also continue in the future. How things will continue with the Tech3 customer team is still open. The drivers currently under contract are also likely to face an uncertain future.

After all, KTM boss Stefan Pierer mentioned in the course of the race weekend in Austria that he thinks Jorge Martin is big, and that he should also start for Aki Ajo in the coming season. Otherwise, the Finnish team should serve as a transition station to MotoGP. Most recently, for example, Miguel Oliveira made the leap into Moto2. Successful Moto3 riders who are under contract with KTM should therefore continue to have the opportunity to gain a foothold in Moto2 thanks to the continued cooperation with Ajo.

Focus on MotoGP and Moto3

In the future, KTM would like to focus even more on MotoGP and Moto3. The Austrians want to get involved in MotoGP as successfully as possible until at least 2026. To this end, the contract with Dorna, which was still valid for two years, was extended for another five years.

In addition, one would like to establish the subsidiary Husqvarna in Moto3. Accordingly, from 2020 onwards, besides KTM motorcycles, bikes with Husqvarna branding will also be launched. According to their own statements, there will be its own Husqvarna team with two drivers. In addition, they want to put their own bike on the wheels and not just a KTM motorcycle in Husqvarna paintwork. Husqvarna competed in Moto3 in the 2014 and 2015 seasons. At that time, however, the Moto3 Husqvarnas were technically based on the KTM bikes. Now the Austrians want to position Husqvarna technically as a separate brand in Moto3.

Conclusion

KTM served talented riders in Moto2 as a springboard for advancement into MotoGP. Most recently, Miguel Oliveira made it to the premier class. Now KTM is withdrawing from Moto2 to focus on MotoGP and Moto3. It will be exciting to see whether the strategy works.
