What is the point of a perfectly tuned chassis without clever rubbers? Even. Motorcycle tires are and will remain the number one tuning measure. Not only for optimal driving pleasure, but also to be able to master critical situations safely. Of course, ABS is part of the basic equipment of almost every new motorcycle. But our tire tests show that, depending on the tires, the braking distances on the same motorcycle are very different. A look at the last touring tire test, in which a Yamaha FJR 1300 A on wet tires is a gap of over seven meters between the best and the worst tires – more than a van is long! And mind you, all six test pairs were the top models from the respective manufacturers!

A comparison with a well-hung predecessor would have resulted in even more dramatic fluctuations in this test scenario. Which is why we are again looking forward to this year’s MOTORRAD tire test with excitement: From MOTORRAD issue 11/2016 it starts with enduro tires for big travel enduros à la Multistrada, GS, 1190 and 1290 Adventure.
On the following pages, we have already compiled all of the findings on the 2016 tire year.

Touring tires
markus-jahn.com
Touring tires are the all-rounder among motorcycle tires.
They are the all-rounders among motorcycle tires. On the one hand, they have to have sporty genes for a brisk alpine lap or the best time on the home track. On the other hand, as an endurance runner, it is important to cover several thousand kilometers without lasting loss of profile. And of course: You can drive in wind and weather, which is why touring fans also value good wet performance. For the 2016 season, Conti, Dunlop and Metzeler launched these new rubbers in the tourist class.
Continental Road Attack 2 Evo GT: In the 2015 tire test that MOTORRAD carried out on Yamaha’s touring flagship FJR 1300 A, Conti sent the aging Road Attack 2 GT into the race with a heavy heart. No problem on the country road: even after 4,000 kilometers, it still showed top values. But in the pure wear evaluation as well as in wet conditions, the GT tire slipped backwards. Twice last place – so the end result could no longer be saved. Things can now get better with the EVO GT, which should shine with a new mixture, especially in the rain.
Conclusion: Contis have always impressed us with their extreme handiness. This character will also distinguish the Road Attack 2 EVO GT. But whether he can drive away from the competition in the wet? This question remains exciting!
Dunlop Roadsmart III: How much development work actually goes into a touring tire, we have in the article “Tire development” illustrated in more detail using the example of the new Dunlop Roadsmart III. Here is the starting point again: In 2015, the predecessor was not (any more) easy. Last place in the country road / motorway classification, penultimate in rain, in wear with fourth place somehow right in the middle. Lots of construction sites that should now be processed in the new Roadsmart III.
Conclusion: With the latest new enduro releases, the TR91 and Trailsmart, Dunlop has really turned the field around. That’s why our test prognosis for the touring tire Roadsmart III is: a hot contender for the podium!
Metzeler Roadtec 01: The Roadtec 01 heralds a new era for the traditional Munich brand. Gone are the days of the Z typology, the last representative of which, the Z8 Interact, was able to clinch overall victory on Yamaha’s FJR 1300 in the 2015 touring tire test. Country roads, autobahns, wet roads, mileage – the Z8 was a benchmark in every chapter. A solid base on which the new generation can saddle up. With its distinctive tread design, the Roadtec 01 initially lacks any relationship to the Z8.
Conclusion: The Z8 Interact impressed with its balance. Even if this was at the top of the Metzeler developers’ specifications when developing the Roadtec 01, it will be a tough year for the competition.
The competition in the 2015 test
- Bridgestone Battlax T 30 Evo
MOTORCYCLE test result: Bridgestone’s T 30 Evo is an inconspicuous all-rounder that will eat up kilometers. This goes well with its first-class stability when fully loaded. In terms of agility and wet performance, it’s more of a second choice. - Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT
MOTORRAD test result: Michelin’s GT version of the Road 4 made it to second place overall. But the GT will not convince country road fans. Rather all-weather riders who also value mileage. - Pirelli Angel GT
MOTORRAD test result: The sum of the individual results resulted in second place in the 2015 final balance for the Pirelli Angel GT. A first-class choice for sporty touring fans who don’t care about tire wear.
Sports tires
markus-jahn.com
Sports tires – this is the premier class of motorcycle tires. A lot got moving again in 2016.
Also in the premier class of motorcycle tires a lot got moving again in 2016. With Bridgestone, Conti and Pirelli, three well-known manufacturers have thoroughly revised their sports tires. In the past, this genre has been fine-tuned more and more towards suitability for everyday use. Not radically tailored to the racetrack – every premium brand has another so-called hypersport, i.e. racing tire, ready. These sports tires, on the other hand, should also prove themselves in the rain and through their mileage.
Bridgestone S21: For a long time, the Japanese brand has shown relentless toughness in this category. In other words: the sports tires from Bridgestone were designed for maximum stability at high speed. With the result that agility and wet performance fell by the wayside. The BT16 Pro heralded the turnaround a few years ago, which then led to the new S-Class. The S20 was the first to convince in the MOTORRAD tests, liked cornering orgies and was anything but afraid of water. Its drawback: a very low mileage. Which is why the Japanese launched the S20 Evo as the successor. In the last big comparison including wear evaluation, the Evo was just behind the two test winner tires of Metzeler and Michelin claim. The newly designed S21 is now aiming for victory?
Conclusion: In our first tests, the S21 was particularly convincing in a sporty pace: Precise, neutral, stable – with these properties, it will appeal to drivers who are ambitious in racing in particular. When it is wet, however, it stays behind the S20 Evo – you have to like that.
Continental Sport Attack 3: Conti and curves, this connection has always worked very well in our tests. In the handling rating, the Hanoverians set the bar very high and always impressively show the competition where the hammer hangs. Apparently, however, it hardly seems to rain in Lower Saxony (as in Hesse, where the development department is located). Because Contis have never really liked wet roads. Which is why the Sport Attack 2 also ended the test in penultimate place in MOTORRAD’s last major sports tire comparison. The predecessor of the Sport Attack 3 also buckled when it came to measuring wear. This should now have increased significantly in these two chapters. When it comes to wet grip, the developers speak of a 20 percent improvement in performance – thanks to a modified profile design and rubber compound with a high silica content.
Conclusion: The first trips with the Sport Attack 3 prove that this Conti has little in common with its predecessor. Thanks to the high grip and great feedback, you can master even very wet passages in a relaxed manner with the threesome. But: The number two was able to handle and aim a little better!
Pirelli Diablo Rosso III: Above all, a sports tire has to be very sporty! This is how Pirelli’s motto can be summed up. This was proven time and again in our tests by the fact that the Italo rubbers, which were always very sporty – but which are now only baked in Germany or China – took the unchallenged pole position in a racetrack comparison. Then where was it traditionally? In the everyday chapters! Rainy turns on the home track, cross-country skiing skills – here the Pirellis usually wave the red flag. In 2014, we let its more sharply tuned sister model Diablo Rosso Corsa run for the then very graying Rosso II. But even he could not save the honor and ended up in fifth place. In 2016 Pirelli attacked with the Rosso III and now wants to collect points, especially in the everyday rating.
Conclusion: The first driving test with the Rosso III gives confidence: it builds up strong grip much earlier than its predecessor, which has a positive effect in everyday use. At the same time, its hot grip has not decreased – that is an important message for race track fans. Open question: the wetness …

This is how MOTORRAD tests
The tire test is one of the most complex tests in everyday editorial work at MOTORRAD. Especially if the wear analysis is on the plan for one category. The functional tests, which are carried out on wet and dry roads, deal with these points:
- Steering precision: Test in passages of different speeds with complicated curve radii. Provides information on whether the motorcycle is following the desired course or whether significant line corrections are required.
- Handiness: Required steering force to tilt the machine or to keep it in line in alternating curves.
- Cornering stability: Stability in (alternating) curves and on bumps. Is tested solo and with a pillion passenger in a large lean angle when accelerating, in which the tires can literally rock up.
- Straight ahead: High speed on the motorway. Does the motorcycle remain stable on course or interfere with commuting??
- Liability in an inclined position: Lateral guidance in maximum inclination on wet and dry asphalt. A tightrope walk that is only possible on a closed route.
- Adhesion when accelerating: Lateral guidance and power transmission in corners at different speeds. Is tested in wet and dry conditions.
- Borderline behavior: Controllability of the tire at the limit of grip. The test is carried out on both wet and dry tracks.
- Erection moment: When braking in an inclined position, the motorcycle straightens up differently depending on the deceleration and tire contour. This reaction must be compensated by the driver with a counterforce (pressure) on the inside of the handlebar end.
