Nine motocross boots tested

Eating kilometers on the autobahn, fun bends on dusty country roads, resting on loose ground – and then finally at your destination! The boots that can go along with it all belong to the crossover category. Nine candidates in the test.

Klaus Herder

If a boot manufacturer were to concentrate exclusively on the buyer of a BMW R 1100 GS, R 1150 GS and R 1200 GS, it would have over 88,000 potential customers in Germany alone. If you include the V-Strom, Varadero and Multistrada, which also belong to the all-rounder category, you come across a brisk six-digit number of motorcyclists who – at least in theory – need a boot that combines the comfort of a touring boot with the robustness of robust enduro bikes.

Of course, the relevant boot suppliers have long recognized the need and have models in their range that can be summarized under the wonderfully contemporary term crossover. Different approaches are followed in the construction of the “cross-over boots”. Some approach the subject from the hardcore side, and the result is a tough dog like that Gaerne G-Force. Although it offers a lot of basic stability and also decent protection potential, it is unfortunately so clunky that its suitability for everyday use falls by the wayside. Completely incomprehensible: the lack of water resistance. Other providers approach the topic from the touring boot side. But it is not enough to install a few quick-release buckles and the somewhat unmotivated distribution of protective planking. The streetfighter and the one too IXS are examples of such half-hearted solutions. The BMW boot proves that a softer solution definitely has bestseller potential. Although it lacks the basic stability of real enduro boots, it allows so much feeling for the motorcycle through that GS riders rarely get the best out of it. Combined with a high level of comfort and good workmanship, the verdict “very good” is the logical consequence.

But have implemented the crossover concept most consistently Alpinestars and especially Sidi. The two most expensive boots also offer the most, namely the best of both worlds. Anyone who goes on a big tour with these all-rounders will be able to sing the praise of the art of shoemaking at the end of the day.

Conclusion
The most expensive boots are at the top of the final bill, the cheaper ones in the lower half – the knowledge that good footwear simply costs good money is once again confirmed by this boot test. With the Sidi wins a boot that is very close to the crossover ideal. But even with the three other test participants, who were also rated “very good”, travel enduro riders, for example, cannot go wrong. With the other candidates it is important to make more or less big compromises.

Alpinestars Durban Gore-Tex.

At first glance a bit martial, but in walking and driving practice surprisingly comfortable boots with proper workmanship and satisfactory safety equipment. Its great strength is its breathability – the ideal, unfortunately expensive, footwear for long trips to hotter climates.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

BMW Santiago

BMW Santiago.

As if made for the R 1200 GS rider who seldom or never drives off-road, because the high flexibility is a blessing when surfing on country roads, but rather a disadvantage when standing in the pauses. The top processed
Treads are worth considering even for those who are not branded.

Dainese Visoke D-Wp

Dainese Visoke D-Wp.

A bit clunky – Italian chic actually looks different – but among other things. therefore very well suited for mixed on / off-road use. Gaerne G-Force

Gaerne G-Force.

Missing the topic – the G-Force is a pure off-road boot, an astonishingly comfortable one, but completely oversized for mixed use. The biggest weakness is the lack of water resistance. But if you only see asphalt as a necessary bad journey for the desert trip, you might be happy.

Provider: Buse, Telephone 02471/12690, www.buese.com;
Price: 179.95 euros;
Colors: Black, White;

plus
Easy entry; snug fit, very easy to fix; very robust and easy to use buckles; very high basic stability-
lity; proper processing; good security equipment; cheap

MOTORRAD judgment: sufficient

IXS Road II

IXS Road II.

A conventional touring boot with a light enduro look and only very poor off-road qualities. Can’t really convince in terms of handling, driving or workmanship, but at least it’s absolutely waterproof. The price-performance ratio is not entirely consistent.

Provider: IXS, Telephone 07631/18040, www.ixs.de;
Price: 199.90 euros;
Color: Black; Sizes: 39 to 50;
Material: cowhide;

Measured values *: SH 41 cm, 2300 g;
Country of manufacture: China

Good fixation; good feeling for shifting and braking; satisfactory safety equipment, good shin and ankle protection; absolutely waterproof

minus
Narrow entry, difficult exit; awkward lacing of the inner part; Buckles difficult to grip; unsatisfactory wearing comfort, lower buckle presses after a short time; strong wrinkling in a more sporty sitting position; mixed processing quality

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Pharao Enduro touring boots

Pharao Enduro touring boots.

A comfortable, sturdy and well-made boot that has little contact with the motorcycle and is not really convincing when it comes to handling – even at this low list price. But if the Pharaoh is available at a special price, he is well worth considering.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Sidi Adventure Gore-Tex

Sidi Adventure Gore-Tex.

An excellent combination of flexible touring and robust off-road boots. Sidi proves that a high level of basic stability and lavish safety equipment can certainly allow intimate contact with the machine. The price is steep, but the clear test winner is worth the money.

Streetfighter Transformer

Streetfighter Transformer.

The cheapest boot in the test isn’t cheap, it’s just cheap. Even after a short period of wearing, the testers longed to take them off. The waterproofness is one of the few pluses, but it cannot make up for the lack of fit and comfort.

Provider: Louis, Telephone 040/73419360, www.louis.de;
Price: 139.95 euros;
Color: Black;
Sizes: 41 to 47;
Material: cowhide;
Features: Drygate membrane, two aluminum buckles;
Measured values *: SH 37 cm, 2404 g;
Country of manufacture: China / Vietnam

plus
Easy entry; easy-to-use buckles; good latch contact; good shin protection; very wide Velcro on the shaft; absolutely waterproof

minus
Unsatisfactory fit causes many pressure points; moderate driving comfort (shin protection cuts in when bent slightly); Shift reinforcement much too far forward, shift lever pushes in behind it; partly bad workmanship (rivets fell off the decorative panel)

MOTORRAD judgment: sufficient

Vanucci VTB5

Motocross boots tested

mps photo studio

Vanucci VTB5.

Even when new, these boots look worn out – this is due to the too wide cut. No close contact to the machine can be established with it. It’s a shame, because handling, workmanship and water resistance are quite successful. Interesting for “broad-footed people” thanks to the special price.

Provider: Louis, Telephone 040/73419360, www.louis.de;
Price: 199.95 Eur;
Color: Black; Sizes: 41 to 47;
Material: cowhide; Features: Sympatex membrane, two plastic buckles; Measured values *: SH 39 cm, 2220 g;
Country of manufacture: Romania

plus
Very easy entry; good wearing comfort; very easy to use buckles; proper processing; absolutely waterproof

minus
Moderate fit, cut way too wide, especially in the front area; poor basic stability, especially the shaft is too flexible; offers little support and little feedback; Security equipment just average

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory
