The world’s bizarre motorcycle museum
The Motorcyclepedia Museum in Newburgh, New York State, cannot be beaten for bizarre machines. Most of the movie motorcycles are here in their original form, prototypes, one-offs and crazy artifacts.

On the occasion of the presentation of their new Scorpion Trail II in New York City, the girls and boys from the tire manufacturer Pirelli came up with something very special: They showed MOTORRAD a place that gives you goosebumps and definitely has to do with motorcycle tires: just an hour away from New York York City is a huge former hardware store in the small town of Newburgh. It no longer houses consumer goods, but two-wheeler treasures: motorcycles and related artifacts that are unparalleled anywhere in the world. No one with gasoline in their blood should travel to New York without visiting the massive Motorcyclepedia Museum in the attractive Hudson Valley.

There are 450 motorcycles on 7,900 square meters. This makes Motorcyclepedia, founded in 2011, one of the largest museums in the world. The brands on display make connoisseurs sit up and be amazed: Pope, Thor, Ace, Cleveland, Reading Standard, Flying Merkel, De Dion-Bouton, Constantin et Cabannes, Lamaudière, Marsh Metz, Wagner, Pierce, Orient, Pennington, FN, Flanders, Columbia, Copeland, Steffey, Thomas, Wanderer, Emblem, Monarch and many more. In addition, a very complete collection of all Indians ever built, most Harley models including military bikes, police and special bikes for rail and snow.
Motorcycles from Hollywood movies
The machines that starred in Hollywood films create fascination above all. Like the futuristic bike from “Tron Legacy”, the martial machine from “Ghost Rider” or the choppers by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper from “Easy Rider”. The initiator and founder of the museum, Gerald A. Doering, was 84 years old when it opened in 2011. His son Ted Doering was 62 when the two were able to present the collection for the first time. All their lives they have looked for, found or built motorcycles themselves. They have crossed the line from passion for collecting to obsession.
While Gerald, who bought his first Indian back in 1947, is primarily into historical machines, his son’s love belongs to the crazy choppers from the 1960s to 1980s. Gladly completely artistically redesigned so that at some point optics won over drivability. The two flavors can coexist because there is simply everything in this collection, because the initiators, who are now supported by the state and the community, “want to be different”.

Old Doering is particularly proud of an elegantly designed Pierce from 1910, which has a four-cylinder in-line engine installed lengthways. Gerald’s mission: to bring back into the public consciousness all the long-lost, now completely forgotten, small US brands from the early days of the motorcycle. Or motorcycles with special stories: a Harley that was part of the Kennedy assassination, a machine that belonged to Charles Lindbergh.
The Motorcyclepedia also shows machines of European or Japanese production. Motorcycle enthusiasts should plan at least one day, the museum offers charms for every taste and as further highlights even the original office of Steve McQueen, some of his machines and two complete “Wall of Death” wood boilers. In addition, posters, plates, paintings, photos and clothing from more than a century of motorcycle history.

Tarmac with good grip, roller coaster-like winding streets and panoramic views sweeten the approximately four-hour tour through the Hudson Valley in New York State

Who would have thought that a visit to the Motorcyclepedia Museum in Newburgh could also be combined with a grand motorcycle tour? The round through the Bear Mountains, Hudson Highlands and other hills in the area to the right and left of the Hudson River brings a lot of driving pleasure and landscape experiences. You can surf on curvy roads with little traffic all the way up to the cliffs at the edge of the river. This offers passages in which you can not believe your eyes, so spectacular is the road carved into the shore landscape. The Hudson Coast Road can at least in parts easily compete with the Amalfi Coast or the famous coastal roads in South Africa. So if you still have time, energy and money after the spectacular museum visit, you should go to Hudson Valley Motorcycles (www.hudsonvalleymotorcycles.com) ask for a rental bike in Ossining or ask Eagle Rider for one directly from New York City (www.eaglerider.com) to rent.
