Not even half a liter displacement, but already four cylinders – the little speedsters usually have the image of weak-chested barrel organs. There are beautiful models with the finest technology, which are always serious athletes or naked bikes.

There is no substitute for displacement, except … “We all know this wisdom. Which is true on the one hand, and yet also not. Who can not only win something from the ultimate torque bang, but also from filigree technology and unbound-
The joy of revving, paired with smooth running and turbine sound, is also fascinated by small four-cylinder engines. In a displacement league that was otherwise reserved for the single-cylinder pots or at most for the twins.
If we take a quick look back, the four-cylinder made its motorcycle debut very early on. The Belgian company FN (Fabrique Nationale), originally a weapons manufacturer, had already offered a bike with a four-horsepower, longitudinally installed four-cylinder and cardan drive in 1904. This had a displacement of 362 cm³
and therefore fits well into the limit of 400 cm³, which we want to apply here when we speak of “small” four-cylinders. The main focus should be on bikes from the recent past, which can still be found at least occasionally in sales advertisements or on the road.

Moto Guzzi and Benelli under one company roof and brought the two-wheeled world various almost identical models with two different brand logos. As early as 1973, the Italians offered the Moto Guzzi 350 GTS with a newly developed, short-stroke four-cylinder. The 31 hp engine (with horizontally split engine-gearbox) was also used in the Benelli 350 RS and 354/354 Sport II. Guzzi had increased this to 400 cm³ as early as 1975, but with the 254 model (see page 14) at the 1975 Milan trade fair, the smallest four-cylinder was also presented.

Kawasaki Z 400 J (derived from the Z 500) and Yamaha XJ 400 (sister model of the XJ 550, both derived from the XJ 650 and both now with a chain instead of a cardan shaft) the light of day. While the XJ 400 never officially came to Germany, Kawasaki offered the Z 400 J here from 1980 for 5420 marks. With the 27 HP for Germany (open 43 HP) the heavy Kawa did not tear up any trees.
With the uncastrated 42 hp of its four-valve engine, however, the GSX 400 F was allowed to compete in 1981, Suzuki’s answer to the 400 four-cylinder shaft. The successful 750 and 1100 Katana models designed by Target-Design prompted the Suzuki chief stylist to create an exciting mini-interpretation of the Katana idea himself with the 400 series. A shrink version in the “real” Katana styling was only available in 1991 with the 250, a year later also as the 400, both with water-cooled motors.
