With the XR 1200 Harley tried in 2008 to bring a completely European bike to the start and had to listen to some criticism. You listened and acted. The result is called the XR 1200X.
The question “What is a sports motorcycle?" is not always easy to answer. If you ignore the fact that it has to be a real racer or the street derivative of one. Which leads us directly into a new dilemma with the XR 1200, because it is often presented as the street version of the legendary XR 750.
But it cannot live up to this claim. Even Harley-Davidson realized that a long time ago. The basic XR 1200 in particular, designed as a real European and therefore sporty roadster, stands on somewhat shaky legs, which is why the naked bike in Milwaukee has been given a fully adjustable chassis including a new front brake for 2010.

The new XR fork is preloaded using an Allen key on the fork base.
We remember: In the PS test, the soft and poorly responding fork of the standard XR in combination with the ultra-sharp brake was noticeable. Even when the brake was only slightly pulled, it grabbed brutally.
The fork shot down at record speed and often struck through. The new fork of the X variant now makes it possible for aggressive riders to be much more committed on the wagging course. The sitting posture is still an obstacle to building a close, trust-building relationship with the front wheel, and the response behavior does not reach a top level either. But with the appropriate setup, nothing works anymore.
With the now floating disc, the brake is still a real bite, but its controllability has happily improved. The handling also seems to be optimized, but turning still requires a hard hand.

The Duo-Shocks with a reservoir at the rear have compression and rebound adjustment.
The rear can also be trimmed using the fully adjustable duo-shocks. During the test drive over quite undulating ground, these dampers also responded somewhat insensitively and shook the driver vigorously. In fast arcs, the XR 1200X tended to swing slightly, especially on small bumps. This behavior calls for a more detailed check to find out more about the setting range.

Conclusion:
The XR 1200 is definitely not one of those sluggish Harley irons. Not too narrow, but blessed with alternating curves are her thing. It can do this even better with the chassis for an extra cost of almost 1000 euros, even if the response behavior on the fork and the rear is not entirely convincing. The X is a casual, fun package – nothing more, nothing less.
