Presentation of the BMW R 1200 RT and R 1200 ST
Drums
The Bavarian boxers strike a double blow: First, the new R 1200 RT appears, the production version of which can now be presented to the public. The R 1200 ST is to follow later, following in the footsteps of the aging RS.
Admittedly, photos of new machines from Munich came more than once, which at first caused complete irritation. Just think of the 1100 GS with the duck’s bill. Shocking! But the GS became an absolute hit, and it wasn’t just in this case that it was
Success for the Munich designers right.
Another unusual example from recent times: the naked K 1200 R, also not mainstream, the regular customers reacted confused. Seen in this way, the new one works R. 1200 RT almost conventional, but formally ties it without all-
too hard surprise elements to the function-oriented design of the previous model. On the other hand, it was clear that this was not a superficial facelift. Because the successor to the RT should receive the new 1200 engine and the chassis technology of the current R 1200 GS.
The new one therefore has more pressure, 16 percent more power than the old RT
state the Bavarians. That means 110 instead of the previous 95 hp and thus around ten hp more than the GS. Is achieved
the power boost, among other things, by a gentle increase in the nominal speed of 500 / min, which in turn is due to aerodynamically favorable intake routes, a new exhaust system and modified cam profiles. The RT-Boxer reaches its zenith at 7500 revolutions, at 8000 rpm it is finally over. The technicians also increased the compression ratio to one to twelve using higher pistons, which is a brave figure with a bore of 101 millimeters. They want to keep the combustion under control through the latest engine management with knock control and separate lambda sensors. Prook despite increased performance-
BMW complains about 0.7 liters less fuel consumption at a constant speed of 120 km / h. However, the more powerful engine now prefers 98-octane Super Plus, if necessary, with a slight reduction in power, you can be satisfied with super or even regular gasoline.
When it comes to the chassis, the RT does not differ in principle from the GS. At
the load-bearing engine-gearbox unit is screwed on to a framework in a half-timbered construction, which of course is more generous in accordance with the voluminous »body«. The spring elements are also known. The proven works at the front
Telelever with 35 millimeter stanchions and now 120 millimeter stroke, the rear the compact Paralever with slight modifications for the wider tire and 135 millimeters of travel. For the first time, an electronically adjustable chassis (ESA) is available as special equipment for the Boxer series, as is already available for the K. This allows the damping to be varied while driving at the push of a button on the handlebar. If that works as well as in the four-cylinder, it could
it will be an interesting option, especially for touring riders who are traveling with different loads.
There is also news to report from the stoppers. With the RT, the Bavarians rely on the fully integral ABS as standard on the partially integral ABS, and continue to use the brake booster, which is controversial because of its abrupt onset. A slightly smaller disc at the rear and stiffer brake calipers at the front, like steel-sheathed brake lines, are part of the fine-tuning of the deceleration system.
The entire electrical system works like
in the GS based on a CAN bus (Controller Area Network). The increased use of electronics need not worry tourists, so far electronics have shown
no failure symptoms in the R 1200 GS. An immobilizer is integrated. The instrument panel denotes god-
Praise classic simplicity, between easy-to-read round instruments there is an information flat screen with all the important control displays. On request, BMW offers an on-board computer that includes an oil level warning. Two simultaneously burning H7 low beam lamps in free-form reflectors create good visibility at night, with the central light for the high beam in between.
The mighty casing should offer excellent wind and weather protection and integrate the passengers in an optimal way. As before, the window can be adjusted electrically by 140 millimeters. The driver’s seat can also be adjusted, although not electrically. And for whom the two levels are not
enough, that can have a lower seat
order. BMW promises ready to drive for
the 1200 RT without the standard case 259 kilograms, that’s 20 kilograms less than the old RT.
A whole block of special equipment and accessories is available for individual upgrading, ranging from CD radio to navigation system to white indicators. Interesting extras such as the ESA chassis, top case or radio /
Navi can, however, drive the costs up significantly. Even the purchase price of 15,100 euros is not exactly a bargain offer, but it is realistically calculated in relation to the previous model, which is around 500 euros cheaper. The new R 1200 RT will be available from dealers by the end of January.
There are still no details of the second innovation from Bavaria, the R 1200 ST
known. But also the sports tourer
won’t be long in coming
let’s talk about April next year. In the case of the ST, the Bavarian designers are taking a bolder path,
at least in terms of the front view. The two central headlights are enthroned high above two air shafts. The instruments are not in disguise,
but mounted on the upper triple clamp so that it rotates with it, an unusual solution. In the rear area, on the other hand, the sports tourer is drawn much more conventionally.
Designated successor to the RS, the ST is designed as a classic sports tourer. The base should be the same as for the
RT, so the engine also with the
said 110 hp come. This means that the ST is certainly sufficiently motorized compared to a Honda VTR 1000 or a 1000 MZ, but remains among the front runners in its class like the one recently
124 strengthened Suzuki SV 1000. Whereby the
The last few horsepower are not the issue for the sports tourers in contrast to the super sports category.
Driving characteristics such as handling are of greater importance. And in this regard, the new one should be vastly superior to its predecessor, not least because of its lower weight. It is rumored that the tank is less than 230 kilograms, a good 15 kilograms less than the RS. The chassis is based on the familiar elements, even if the visually revised Telelever looks almost like an upside-down fork at first glance.
And the rest of the boxer program? The roadster obviously remains untouched for the time being. During the cruiser that
R 1200 C, just retired, the R 1100 S has to toil for at least another year. A successor
is undoubtedly to be expected, much sportier and certainly even stronger than that
two current new releases, but definitely not before 2006.
