Smart in the hotel lobby: Buse bags with a suitcase function. However, the construction is a bit shaky when fully loaded.

The Vanucci scope of delivery includes waterproof inner bags. They offer good protection, but are difficult to pack.

5/28
The ultra-compact and sufficiently stiff bags from Saddlemen fit almost every motorcycle. But: They hardly hold luggage.

6/28
Sufficiently large outer pockets like the Shad Zulupack are practical. Replacement gloves, for example, are quickly at hand.

Slim line: The Hein Gericke bags harmonize with many machines. Expandable in width, they offer good storage space.

Waterproof tarpaulin and an efficient roll closure: Enduristan’s soft luggage is well equipped for any weather.

If you don’t get the hang of it – with Giant Loop the zipper gets stuck due to extreme bulging due to the design.

The soft, waterproof Givi bags hold a lot of luggage, but the simple handles cut into the hand when they are heavy.

Sophisticated system at Held: solid carrying handle and effective, easy-to-use storage space expansion with a zip.

No fear of contact with Ortlieb: Foamed, solid material on the inside gives the soft bags a good fit.

The slim Saddlemen XL Sport Saddlebags are quick to install on many machines, but are more like make-up cases. They are more suitable for excursions than for larger tours.

The Bagster Cruise offer a lot of storage space and, above all, a sophisticated system with high variability. Go well with sports touring machines, fully suitable for vacation.

Buse’s huge saddlebags with wheels and an integrated telescopic rod to pull behind are most likely to win over die-hard hotel tourists. Quality: rather mediocre.

The flat and solid Dane Anholt can be used in a variety of ways and apparently harmonize well with older sports tourers and all-rounders à la Suzuki Bandit.

20/28
In terms of volume, the Givi WP405 compete with suitcases. A good choice for enduro bikes with an already installed carrier system in order to be able to fix the soft luggage better.

21/28
The Enduristan Monsoon 2 like to make friends with off-road machines and are designed for the rough. High material quality and good workmanship speak for it.

Goes well with different motorcycles and offers a lot of space. But: Packing and unpacking quickly becomes a fiddly act with the Giant Loop because of the one-compartment strategy.

Cleanly processed, inexpensive – great! A good compromise between a compact design and easy-to-use storage space. Depending on the motorcycle, however, a drive-through width of up to one meter (MOTORRAD purchase tip).

The compact and neatly crafted Held Arvo is a great way to go on a short tour with an overnight stay, as there is enough storage space for it. The price is fair.

The cheapest saddlebags in this comparison. However, the Modeka Regular also look the cheapest. External dimensions and packing volume are well coordinated.

26/28
Waterproof construction, enough storage space, clever features. Suitable for many types of machines – the very practical Ortlieb Speedbags are worth their high price.

Soft luggage as an alternative
If you believe the catalog texts, unlike model-specific luggage systems, universal soft luggage can simply be thrown over, lashed, and off you go on a long tour. The practice looks different, because the special pockets do not harmonize well with many current machine types. If luggage and motorcycle fit together and nothing wobbles or slips, nothing stands in the way of a partnership. Then soft luggage is a good alternative.
Thorsten Dentges
07/03/2014
On paper it says: “Saddlebags that can be easily attached to the bike (…) optimally designed for the touring sport and naked bikes of the current generation.” But think about it. Unfortunately, what the advertising text promises looks different in reality. Are the Yamaha MT-07 and MT-09, Honda CB 650 F and Fireblade born in 2010 or a 2013 KTM 1190 Adventure just exceptional motorcycles that are so strangely shaped that the advertised universal pannier is simply not tight and secure? is lashed? Hardly likely. In the comparison of 14 panniers presented here, problems frequently occurred when attaching the supposedly universal luggage systems.

There were around 25 different types of motorcycles in the motorbike fleet, from the cutting-edge MT-07 to the oldie water buffalo. But only very few machines could be equipped with one of the soft luggage systems by simply throwing them over and lashing them down without stress. Above all, sporty machines with a steeply rising, narrow rear end are not very “receptive” when they are to be paired with panniers. The luggage system itself can hardly be scolded for it, just because radically styled machines such as an MV Agusta Rivale can lash at most a pack of speeds.
We do not recommend spontaneous purchases
But it is annoying for the buyer when he is misled. Statements made by vendors, dealers and sellers when researching this article are indicative. “Yeah, no, well, uh”, someone rightly stutters, “universal actually just means that the bags should fit individual motorcycles.” You have to look carefully to see whether the system also fits your own machine . Another explains: “No, we don’t have a list of motorcycles that our bags will fit on. But customers who absolutely want our bags often make great individual mounts for their motorcycle! “
Well, if you take the term “universal” according to Duden, it means “comprehensive, wide-ranging”. Do you mean extra-meter-long straps to secure the bags so that they don’t get tangled up in the bike at high speed on the motorway? Supplier Louis (from whose catalog text was quoted) at least has special spacers in its range. For example also for the MT-07? Nothing, so smeared. Universal in connection with soft luggage means nothing more than “not model-specific”. And for prospective buyers, it means that they should make their way to the retailer with the machine and the most important pieces of luggage – because without a test pack and trip, you absolutely have to advise against making an impulse purchase.

Soft luggage has its advantages
However, if the system is compatible with the motorcycle, soft luggage offers advantages. For example, a lower risk of injury in the event of a fall – the reason why endurance travelers like to combine pannier racks with soft luggage. Then the price: good solutions can be found for less than 100 euros, individual cases are usually more expensive. Finally, weight and attachment. Large and heavy case systems are hardly recommended for sporty bikes and light mid-range machines. MOTORRAD is therefore introducing a wide variety of throw bags, which are definitely worth trying on.

For this comparison of panniers, MOTORRAD has put together representative equipment for a weekend tour.
For this comparison of panniers, MOTORRAD has put together representative equipment for a weekend tour. Here is the packing list: sneakers, underwear and functional underwear, two T-shirts, jeans, sweater, softshell jacket, first aid kit, spare motorcycle gloves, chain spray, tools, summer sleeping bag, travel guide. This “standard luggage” weighs exactly ten kilos. You can start with such equipment, but it is best to make your own list of items that are urgently needed (flashlight, digital camera, stove, tablet PC, etc.).
Heavy packaged goods such as tools should be stored at the bottom with a favorable center of gravity, light items such as T-shirts at the top. Tents and sleeping mats usually neither fit in panniers nor in suitcases and are usually stowed differently in practice or lashed across the bags on the pillion seat or luggage rack.
Weather protection: Even if almost all panniers have at least one rain cover in the scope of delivery, experience has shown that water seeps through seams and zips over the long term. Bags with a roll-top closure and waterproof outer material promise reasonably good protection. But even then, it is advisable to pack sensitive items of luggage such as electronic devices or important documents in tight plastic bags to be on the safe side.
On the subject of machine protection: the bags with their fabric or other outer materials are often in contact with painted parts of the motorcycle. During the journey, the different surfaces rub against each other due to fine vibrations and oscillations, with the result that the machine is quickly spoiled by soft luggage (slight scratches, resulting in pale paintwork in the long term). This can be remedied by transparent adhesive films that are available from specialist retailers.
MOTORCYCLE conclusion
If you don’t want to install an extra carrier system, only dimensionally stable and compact bags that are comparatively flat are possible (Dane, Hein Gericke, Polo, Modeka, Saddlemen). Otherwise, the bags will not be tight enough at the rear and will wobble alarmingly during the journey. The disadvantage, however, is their capacity (25 to 40 liters).
Mini suitcases such as those from saddlemen only hold a few items that could easily be stored in a tank bag or daypack. The extended, wide bags from Hein Gericke made a particularly good impression, but they cleverly provide every cubic centimeter of packing volume and are therefore fully suitable for the weekend. Versions that are easier to swallow, such as the systems from Bagster, Buse, Held and Vanucci, which offer at least 50 liters of storage space, often only fit older sports touring bikes (long, wide rear ends) and are great for motorcycles with carrier systems. If carriers are available, we recommend the best weather protection tarpaulin bags from Enduristan, Givi, Giant Loop, Ortlieb and Shad (storage space up to 60 liters), which were originally developed for motorcycle adventurers.
