herbert O. Kainzinger is a man of extremes. Simple small and small is not part of his credo, rather when tuning he usually acts according to the motto: plop instead of mess! His customers include people who like to dig a little deeper into their pockets for an exclusive bike. We were all the more excited to see the KTM RC8 R, which Kainzinger was rolling at this year’s PS Bridgestone Tuner GP.

“I was just interested in the technology,” replies Herbert O. when asked why he chose the KTM RC8 R as a tuning object. “The engine is made sensational. In addition, I have always been fascinated by the independence of KTM. ”The tuner from Hockenheim felt it was just right that a Swiss businessman was looking for just such a burner for the domestic championship. So quickly ordered the racing version “Track” of the RC8 R, which already bears all kinds of racing genes as standard: multi-adjustable footrests, crash pads, foldable hand levers, sharp brake pads, gearshift, full racing fairing, specially tuned chassis, differently programmed engine control, racing exhaust and much more. The factory mounts an Underslung system from Akrapovic on the track as standard, but the tuner replaced it with the double-pipe system from the same brand, which was newly developed for 2012.

The thunder of the racing facility knocks you out! The powerful, but not too loud, V2 hammering penetrates through the ears directly into the reward center of the brain and never lets go. This is exactly how a super sporty two-cylinder should sound!

Fantastic V2 thunder reverberates from the double pipe system.

The souped-up V2 generates a whopping 188 PS and 138 Nm. It sends its fire very evenly to the transmission, the slightly undulating power development (see diagram) can hardly be felt when driving. The propellant also masters the gentle application of gas at the exit of a curve. However, rough vibrations accompany the trip through the rev range – nothing for softie butts!

The basis of the engine tuning is the superbike kit from KTM, which hardly leaves out any component: cylinders and cylinder heads are just as much part of the scope of delivery as pistons, camshafts, valve springs and connecting rods. Price for the kit alone: just under 10,000 euros. Because of the increased compression of around 13: 1, the drive now needs fuel with at least 100 octane. Kainzinger sees little need for optimization due to the high quality of the offal. For better flow properties, he only revised the cylinder heads and their valve seats. A power commander now controls the injection.

You hardly notice the slightly undulating power development while driving. At 5000 rpm there is already 115 Nm of torque, with a maximum of 138 Nm. The engine clearly prefers the middle speed range, cheering up to the stop does not help.

The technician also worked on the chassis. He built harder springs into the fork and shock absorber and also tuned the damping to be tighter. “My customer is 1.90 meters tall with a corresponding weight,” the tuner justifies the iron setup. For the PS tester – fighting weight without equipment around 80 kilos – the vote was therefore much too tight. That could be one reason why the load in the Parabolica curve swings so strongly. This section of the Hockenheim GP circuit traditionally separates the wheat from the chassis.

The swing is so intense that the driver has to take off the gas to keep the KTM under control. The RC8 R only behaves in a somewhat civilized manner if the pilot stands in the pegs like a jockey and shifts as much weight as possible to the front of the vehicle. “The bike is designed for Most,” says Kainzinger. This could also be an explanation for the behavior in the parabolic steroids. Because the KTM superbike is known to be very sensitive to the numerous setup options that the chassis offers. To work perfectly, it must be carefully adapted to each route.

It’s different with stoppers. They work great everywhere. Pressure point, transparency, dosage, effect, stability: everything from the very best. In order for the aforementioned trio to permanently terrify the racing competition, the chassis only needs to be fit for the respective track.
