What is hissing there? Many have asked themselves this question. Usually after parking the motorcycle. As a rule, the hissing is accompanied by an unknown movement of the stationary bike: it sinks. The hissing, volatile tire pressure causes the tire to collapse. The variant that significantly accelerates the pulse is the loss of tire pressure while driving with suddenly unstable driving. In both cases, the culprit is quickly found: screws, nails or other pieces of metal have penetrated the thick tire rubber, pierced the carcass and finally the sealing layer of the tire or the tube. What to do? Patch the hose, put in the breakdown spray or somehow get it tight again with rubber sausages?
Repair is allowed at all?
Basically yes. This is regulated in Section 36 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations, the guidelines for the repair of pneumatic tires and for the assessment of tire damage are applied. These guidelines allow the maintenance, repair and the use of breakdown aids under certain conditions. But it depends on the type of damage.
In the case of motorcycle tires, repairs up to six millimeters in diameter are only permitted on the tread. However, the tire manufacturers advise against the pierced carcass and high driving speeds.
What damage can be repaired?
The guideline for assessment distinguishes two categories of motorcycle tires. On the one hand, there is superficial tire damage: minor damage that does not result in a loss of pressure. This also includes small tears or cuts that do not run over the entire circumference and from which no threads of the cord layers emerge. Aging cracks no deeper than a millimeter are also considered superficial damage. On the other hand, safety-relevant tire damage: Anything that causes a loss of pressure or changes the structure and properties of the tire. The latter includes everything that has to do with major damage to the tread. These are considered irreparable. In the end, however, the expert has the floor and examines the tire before it is repaired.

What is breakdown assistance?
The guideline understands the term breakdown assistance as temporary emergency aids that enable a trip to the workshop to change the tire. So the well-known breakdown sprays, sealing milk with compressors or the sealing cords introduced from the outside with an awl. By definition, these are not repairs and once these agents have been used, repairs are no longer permitted. FunFact: The cunning insertion of a suitable air hose into the tire is also prohibited, as the tire damage is not repaired here and can spread. Conversely, this should also mean: mending a tube is also prohibited, as the tire still has a hole.
Whether screw-in mushrooms, rubber sausages or breakdown sprays: The use of these agents excludes a subsequent repair of the tire.
What does repair mean??
The guideline to which workshops must adhere to a repair or overhaul basically means filling the hole up to the sealing layer on the inside of the tire and using a sealing patch applied from the inside. Both should finally be treated by hot or warm vulcanization; alternatively, pre-vulcanized rubber bodies, the so-called combination repair bodies, which can also be cold vulcanized, are also allowed. The most common method today. No matter how: The tire must be removed from the rim and examined by a specialist. If the tire seems repairable, holes up to a diameter of six millimeters can be patched on motorcycle tires, but only on the tread. Holes in the flank and on the bead must not be repaired.
When not to be repaired?
The so-called stab wounds from nails, screws and the like can be repaired up to a diameter of six millimeters, but only if the damage has not lasted for a very long time and the tire has not been driven for a long time with too little air pressure. The resulting flexing work can permanently damage the tire structure. These tires must also not be repaired if a puncture spray has been used: These temporary sealants cannot be completely washed out of the tire, there is a risk of the repair patches becoming detached and the high humidity of the agent can cause permanent damage. On the other hand, rubber sealing cords drawn in from the outside do not rule out subsequent repairs.
… because despite all the possibilities, the damage to the tire persists, which can impair driving safety.
What do the tire manufacturers say?
Bridgestone generally advises against repairing motorcycle tires, as further damage to the tire structure can never be ruled out.
Maxxis generally advises against repairing a damaged tire yourself. Nobody can go with “normal” Workshop equipment tells what it really looks like in a tire. Even with X-ray images of tires, not all doubts can be dispelled, especially since nobody in stores has an X-ray machine for tires. Only manufacturers or retreaders have this. If the tire is broken, loses air, no longer runs smoothly or blisters, Maxxis considers it irreparable and should therefore be replaced with a new tire.
Pirelli and Metzeler do not rule out repairs by a specialist, but recommend changing the tire, as driving with low air pressure can cause consequential damage to the tire in another, invisible place.
Continental recommends breakdown assistance only as a makeshift solution for driving to the nearest workshop to have the tire replaced there. However, Continental advises against repairs, even if there is no suspicion that the belt layers are damaged and adds that if repairs are carried out at all, then please after judgment and execution of a specialist.
Michelin advises under all circumstances to consult a specialist, as only the damage caused by driving with insufficient air pressure can correctly classify. However, it should be noted that the endlessly wound 0 ° belt of radial tires is severed by a stab injury, which is especially the case with ZR-marked tires.
What does a tire dealer say
On request from Euromaster, as a tire repair provider, you can read that here no motorcycle tires are repaired at all, as the idea of safety predominates and the high speed indices of mostly over 240 km / h exclude repairs anyway.

Who already has experience with breakdown assistance or tire repairs??
Voted 572 times
So far I have been spared a flat tire.
I noticed the loss of pressure and made it to the workshop to change tires.
I had the tire repaired.
I used a breakdown spray.
I patched the tire with the vulcanizing strips.
Conclusion
Unfortunately, a flat tire rarely catches you in the right place and never with a tire that is almost past life. The garage at home or the trusted tire dealer are usually far away. Roadside assistance is the order of the day, there are many means and they work, they should and must not be a permanent solution.
Repairing a tire is possible and not only common in cars. The manufacturers of motorcycle tires advise against this. Especially the hint that the ZR tires widely used for very high speeds experience immense damage to the carcass after a puncture should startle.
