Sachsenring Classic: Anyone who strolled through the paddock in mid-May and saw the oversupply of historical items could justifiably be amazed. Regardless of whether it was two-wheelers or four-wheeled racers, two- or four-stroke vehicles, pre-war or post-turnaround vehicles – everything was gathered.

To roar with them through the fascinating meandering curves of the Sachsenring and later to chat with them about old and new times – that was just as much fun for the boss as the MOTORRAD heroes, who were able to talk to the pro superbikers in peace.

No wonder with around 750 participants, who were divided into 18 different classes and started in front of over 15,000 spectators this weekend. There would definitely have been more fans if Sunday hadn’t completely fallen into the water.

Among those who shouldn’t regret their visit: Ten MOTORCYCLE heroes including companions who not only won tickets but also a very personal meeting with the ex-champions of Pro Superbike. From Ernst Gschwender to Christer Lindholm: Not all, but very many of the old guard came to be at the revival. After all, it was the Pro Superbike that contested the first race at the new Sachsenring in 1996. And which even now, around 20 years later, knew how to impress again.
Classic editor-in-chief Michael Pfeiffer cavorted among the old warhorses, who on a recently acquired Suzuki GSX-R 750 from 1986 couldn’t resist the temptation to start with his idols of yore. Pfeiffer didn’t care that he couldn’t do anything against the still existing class of former masters or against the technical superiority of their former operational equipment. Speeding through the fascinating winding curves of the Sachsenring together with them and later chatting with them about old and new times – that was just as much fun for the boss as the MOTORRAD heroes, who were able to talk to the Pro Superbikers in peace.
The old men can still do it
fact
Across all years: The Pro Superbike field made no claim to historical accuracy.
In general: Even though almost everything that ever made the racetrack unsafe was represented, from racing machines built up to 1955 to the Eastern classics to historic motorcycle racing with 50 or 80 cubic centimeters, the Pro Superbike was undoubtedly the crowd puller. From early in the morning to late in the evening, the audience crowded into the stars’ boxes, and drivers like Jochen Schmid, Edwin Weibel, Peter Rubatto and Ernst Gschwender probably signed more autographs than they ever did when they were active. And when the Sachsenring threatened to sink in the continuous rain on Sunday, practically nothing changed because in pits 1 and 2 there was not only a dry place, but also a lot to experience.
But not all preferred a roof over their heads for one or the other round in the continuous rain. Peter Rubatto on his unforgettable Bimota-Yamaha in the Hein Gericke design and Michael Galinski on his Yamaha OW-01 were not frightened. Both showed that they still really enjoy driving today. The same also applied to the starters in the other 17 classes. The Sachsenring Classic calls for a repetition.
