Paths in the north

Anyone who has decided on a Scandinavian vacation is faced with a choice: Finnish lakes, Norwegian drama or Swedish idyll? Or would you prefer Danish beaches plus ice cream in Iceland?

Northern Europe offers motorcycle travelers half a continent of the most varied of landscapes and opportunities. Depending on the schedule and budget, completely different route combinations are possible when choosing the ferry ports.

DENMARK
The first stopover for many travelers. The gentle landscapes and idyllic villages of the two largest parts of the country, Jutland and Zealand, have more potential than mere transit status. Especially the long beaches on the North Sea and the Baltic Sea offer wonderful opportunities for water rates ?? and can sometimes even be used by bike. In addition, Denmark is practically the bridgehead to the north, with the departure and arrival ports of many ferries going to Iceland, Norway or Sweden.

ICELAND
The journey from Hanstholm in Denmark alone costs a full four days. Because the ferry connections require a kind of compulsory stay on the Danish Faroe Islands halfway in order to give them a few pieces of the tourist cake. The way back takes two more days. So if you want to go to the wild island, which is closer to Greenland than Norway, you should plan several weeks of vacation. And be prepared for the fact that only the 1400 kilometer long ring road around the island is paved and that the average summer temperature does not exceed 11 degrees. There is pure nature for that. Nowhere else in Europe do volcanoes boil so unabashedly next to the largest glaciers, geysers and hot sulfur springs boil next to mighty waterfalls. And fewer people live. Statistically 2.8 per square kilometer, actually 60 percent in the greater Reykjavik area. Good preparation is therefore essential for the island on the Arctic Circle.

More than just driving. Norway has interesting alternatives with post ships.

NORWAY
Scarcely less daring in terms of landscape, the country with Europe’s longest coastline can claim the top spot in Scandinavia. 21,000 kilometers between Oslo and Kirkenes form one of Norway’s greatest attractions.
Cut up by the steadily storming North Atlantic, fjords extending hundreds of kilometers into the land have formed, which especially in the southern half compete with mighty, glaciated mountain ranges.
Big advantage: The top regions in the south are comparatively easy to reach! And then, like legend, the North Cape, the northernmost point of the continent, still beckons. In previous years it was more of a tough endurance test on the E 6, the only connection road to the north, which is contaminated by mobile homes and radar traps, and the route has been interestingly supplemented by Reichsstrabe 17 between Trondheim and the Lofoten for some time. With the help of many small ferry passages, the RV 17 overcomes the rugged coast of Central Norway in a picturesque way. After that, Plan B can be ignited and the rest of the route to Cape ?? or to one of 36 other ports ?? be covered by post ship on the HurtigRoute. The old line of tradition, created in 1893 to supply the inaccessible coastal towns, is increasingly opening up to tourist interests. and the loading hatches, in addition to their regular cargo, also to a limited extent for vehicles.

Lsnd of 1000 lakes, huts and trees. Finland’s ambience is calm.

FINLAND
Arriving at the northern end, the way back can be sighted via Sweden or Finland and in Lapland the arctic north beyond the Arctic Circle can be penetrated. Either on a south course through Sweden (page 94) or further east between thousands of Finnish lakes and the Russian border, the only real barrier in the north. Because long before the Central Europeans, the Scandinavians had abolished their barriers in the 80s and ensured free transitions. When it comes to currency issues, however, the paths are still individual. While Finland is affiliated with the euro group, the rest of them look after their crowns. Incidentally, just like his royal family. Otherwise, the information section of the Sweden report can be used for many practical travel issues with slight modifications. Financially there is a certain east-west divide that marks Finland as an inexpensive country in the north. In terms of landscape, it is the other way around, so that some recommend starting a tour in eastern Helsinki in favor of a dramaturgical increase.
