Used advice BMW G 650
Xchallenge, Xmoto and Xcountry

The attempt to put three sharper sisters to the side of the nice but somewhat staid BMW F 650 GS failed. That makes the used buyer happy.

Until autumn 2006, BMW’s single-cylinder appearance was a rather conservative one and liked to roll in tow with the big GS boxers: the F 650 GS, often equipped with a lowering kit and then steered by Mutti, those with a hollow back and a somewhat nervous look none really made a confident figure. Cool was somehow different, until then cool mostly came from KTM from Austria. But then BMW brought the issues of hard enduro and supermoto to the g point. The Xcountry joined the Xchallenge, which is extremely long-legged and with large tires, and the Xmoto, which was designed as a wild fun bike. She gave the scrambler, which is literally translated as “climber”, but better translated as “touring motorcycle”. A nice, light motorcycle for every day, that can take a dirt road under the moderately profiled studded tires and that does not overwhelm anyone. The three G models have a common technical basis; the engine and frame are largely identical. Spring elements, wheels, brakes, various add-on parts and of course the packaging make the difference. Every G-model comes from the Aprilia plant in Scorzè in northern Italy. Initially, the slightly modified F 650 engine from Rotax from Austria was installed. From September 2007, the Xcountry received an externally and structurally identical (but not identical!) Engine from Loncin from China. That didn’t detract from the good reliability – on the contrary. The modular concept was clever, but it didn’t really work. Calling the G models flops might be a bit too tough. But to talk about bestsellers would be even worse. The Xchallenge sat between all chairs: too high for recreational enduro riders, not suitable for touring, with too little range and then still too expensive. However, in series production it is again too heavy for real competition use. The Xmoto remained largely unknown and its list price was a deterrent. The Xcountry was initially too high and too expensive, at the time of the price reduction it was actually already considered burned. The China issue didn’t make things any better in terms of image. But as is often the case with supposed failures: As used vehicles, the G-models are already well on their way to becoming enthusiasts. They are still cheap, the famous engine and their driving fun potential make them worth buying.

BMW and premium quality? Forget it! The processing of the G-models is at best on the average Japanese level, but often also below. Fortunately, this does not apply to the engine, which is – apart from occasional clutch problems – a very steadfast journeyman. But the trappings require careful inspection during the inspection: the paint on the plastic parts tends to flake off. If plastics and elastics have suffered even more due to excessive driving enthusiasm, it gets really expensive, because BMW demands real moon prices for the replacement. Loose baffles in the exhaust, rust on all corners and edges (especially on screws and axles), chafed oil and fuel lines, rubbing brake discs, howling brake pads, cracking steering head bearings and failing batteries – that and a lot more can be. But it doesn’t have to, because the processing quality is quite unstable, and many quirks have been fixed on the guarantee or goodwill path. Be careful with the kilometer information: the speedometer unit is often leaky and on many machines is no longer the original.

The big sell-out is finally over. Around a year ago, Xchallenge daily admissions with zero kilometers were still available for less than 6,000 euros, the bargain hunter now has to spend at least 800 euros more. Particularly noticeable: the Xchallenge offer has become surprisingly small in the last year. The Xmoto is now being offered much more frequently, the Supermoto is still a potential grandfather clock. According to the new list price, the most expensive G-model usually costs significantly less in second-hand practice than its comparable sister models. Almost new, the Xmoto is still available for less than six million, decent used ones, often even with ABS, cost from 4,300 euros. ABS-free Xchallenge with light off-road battle marks are available for 4700 euros, standard offers with ABS are around 800 to 1000 euros higher. The Xcountry is traded from 4500 euros, for the lowered 2009 models at least 5100 euros are due.
