Ideally, you have a knowledgeable friend close at hand who scrutinizes the long-awaited dream motorcycle with a critical distance during the on-site inspection – practically miming the advocatus diaboli. The most important part of a thorough check is a detailed look at the engine and chassis. All bearing points should be meticulously checked (steering head, wheels, swing arm). If possible, you should also look under the skin of disguised motorcycles. On the one hand, the actual state of care is usually revealed there (e.g. by tracking down hidden rust nests), on the other hand, telltale traces of changes or accidents can be uncovered.

DOT number provides information about the actual age of the tire

In the first assessment, it is also important to compare the required purchase price with the current status in terms of service and maintenance. An important topic here: the tires. Even if the profile still looks like new, the rubber quality may have suffered considerably due to long idle times or low annual mileage. A look at the so-called DOT number (four-digit, denotes the week and year of production) provides information about the actual age of the tire. In the case of rubbers that are five years or more under their belt, it is best to factor in the price for a fresh set. The condition of the brakes or the chain and the next inspection interval should be assessed equally critically. Incidentally, since many manufacturers are now making any recalls or repairs as part of regular service work, the so-called checkbook of the bike should always be checked critically. So that the dream bike doesn’t turn into a nightmare.

Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R.

Kawasaki ZRX 1200 R: from 3000 euros.

You are clearly an eighties kid, and when the radio hits rock ’n’ roll from that era, crank it up. Of course, you still vividly remember the American Superbike legend Eddie Lawson and his successes in the AMA championship. Thankfully, the right motorcycle of your dreams only looks old-school. In 2001, Kawasaki’s ZXR 1200 series appeared and replaced the 1100 predecessors. The water-cooled four-cylinder was available either naked (ZRX 1200), with a half-shell (“S”) or with bikini cladding in lime green in a retro racing look (“R”, photo). Technically, the three types are practically identical. The centerpiece is the rather rough-running Big Four with flawless power delivery: between 3000 rpm and the rated speed, there is always over 100 Nm. In 2005, the naked and half-disguised ZRX said goodbye to the Kawa range, the retro version “R” will remain on the Green team for two years longer. Around 1300 copies of the R were sold new between 2001 and 2007. Interested parties need to be patient when searching.

Plus: Stable brakes with six-piston calipers have long been regarded as the big bike reference; fully adjustable chassis; made high quality with beautiful details (aluminum swing arm with support and chain tensioning eccentric); from model year 2005 exhaust manifold made of polished stainless steel.

Minus: Difficult to find in original condition; expensive.

Data (model year 2001): Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 1165 cm³, 90 kW (122 PS) at 8500 rpm, weight 250 kg, load 180 kg, tank capacity / reserve 19/5 liters, seat height 800 mm, top speed 239 km / h, acceleration 0 –100 km / h 3.1 seconds, consumption 6.7 l / 100 km.

Aprilia SMV 750 Dorsoduro

Aprilia SMV 750 Dorsoduro: from 4000 euros.

As wildly barking single cylinders, supermotos have a very limited area of application. What if you have to go on a longer tour, unwind fast stages on the track and generally value more smoke? The class of the two-cylinder sumos offers significantly more. There are many used KTMs (around 950 Supermoto), some BMWs (HP2 Megamoto) and a few Ducatis (Hypermotard) in this category. Or the real price hit Aprilia Dorsoduro. The 750-
V-Twin was released in 2008 and cost 8,599 euros at the time. This was later followed by the ABS version (from 9299 euros) and the elegantly equipped Factory with carbon parts and adjustable fork (9999 euros). The Italo bride was configured a bit too weak for real sports fans, the low entry price could not make up for her comparatively high weight and the relatively softly tuned chassis. But if you are looking for a maneuverable everyday bike as a young used one at a bargain price, the Dorsoduro offers a dream combination.

Plus: Beautifully finished in details (e.g. gear lever that can be adjusted using an eccentric); also available in ABS version; different mappings can be set for engine tuning; used mostly in mint condition.

Minus: The flat bench offers too little comfort on long journeys; badly positioned tank ventilation.

Data (model year 2008): Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 750 cm³, 67 kW (91 PS) at 8750 rpm, weight 211 kg, payload 189 kg, tank capacity 13 liters, seat height 880 mm, top speed 200 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.9 sec, consumption 4.8 l / 100 km.

Benelli TnT 1130

jkuenstle.de

Benelli TnT 1130: from 3500 euros.

Motorcycling. That’s pure unreason. It makes a lot of noise. It stinks. And it looks nasty. If a motorcycle fulfills all of the cliches, then this one Benelli With an explosive model abbreviation on top of that. The TNT is not for quiet connoisseurs. But on the contrary. From the 3-in-1 system, the three-cylinder roars felt louder than allowed, even in its original state. In addition, it blows not a few unburned hydrocarbons out of the rear: TNT drivers can be quickly recognized by the smell of gasoline even when they are far from their motorcycles. But the purchase can also be interesting for traditionalists. Because these Benelli bikes come from the (Italian) Merloni era, before the trademark rights were acquired in 2005 by the Chinese Qianjiang Group, which produces Keeway motor scooters, among other things. In any case, TNT driving offers a high level of experience. The stiff chassis and the famous brakes are made for robust rides on the country road. The engine is correspondingly angry, but it demands speeds and a lot of switching work.

Plus: Clean, appealing chassis; powerful Brembo brake system with radial calipers; very good draft; informative cockpit with an easy-to-read tachometer.

Minus: Sluggish clutch; partly sloppily processed (including electrics); Constant speed jolts; sometimes extremely high consumption up to 9 l / 100 km.

Data (model year 2004): Water-cooled three-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 1131 cm³, 99 kW (135 PS) at 9250 / min, weight 220 kg, load 180 kg, tank capacity / reserve 16/5 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 250 km / h, acceleration 0– 100 km / h 3.3 seconds, consumption 5.6 l / 100 km.

Honda VTR 1000 SP-1

Second-hand advice dream motorcycles

Honda VTR 1000 SP-1: from 3000 euros.

There are only a few super sports bikes that still look dynamically fit and fascinating even after many years. Ducatis 916 is such a case for the title “Sexiest Superbike alive”. But Honda’s VTR also has the best chance of receiving this award. One reason is the small but important sticker on the side panel: HRC, the abbreviation for the renowned factory tuning company “Honda Racing Corporation”, which is responsible for this two-cylinder racer. On the slopes, the SP-1 set the bar very high on its debut: Superbike World Championship title with Colin Edwards. For many, however, the VTR was blessed with too many racing genes as an everyday vehicle. The 1000 V-Twin scores with high quality country roads. Especially since it can be adjusted almost ideally to your own needs with its fully adjustable chassis. After two years of construction, the replacement by the equally fascinating, more powerful SP-2 followed in 2002.

Plus: Trimmed uncompromisingly for racing in many details, but definitely suitable for everyday use; high, typical Honda quality; Engine and technology generally very suitable for cross-country skiing; In its original condition, the best potential for a youngtimer with increased value.

Minus: Offer is severely reduced by battered hobby sports VTRs.

Data (model year 2000): Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 999 cm³, 97 kW (132 PS) at 9500 rpm, weight 221 kg, tank capacity / reserve 18 / 2.5 liters, seat height 790 mm, top speed 269 km / h, acceleration 0– 100 km / h 3.2 seconds, consumption 4.7 l / 100 km.

Suzuki GSX-R 1000

fact / Joachim Schahl

Suzuki GSX-R 1000: from 2500 euros.

While some super athletes can only be found in homeopathic doses on German roads (see above), others are, so to speak, the Volkskrad of this genus. For example the GSX-R 1000 series from Suzuki. Even the oil / air-cooled predecessors were a force at the meeting point. With the 1000 series mentioned in the scene talk about Kilo-Gixxer, almost 23,000 copies of the K1 (2001) to L1 (2011) models were sold. Only then did the sales figures plummet – the bestseller is now considered a hard-to-sell grandfather clock. Used, on the other hand, the 1000 series is a popular item, and the high number of units of yore is putting pressure on prices. The 2005/2006 vintage (K5 / K6) is in good demand, because the maturity level, equipment, reliability and … sound! Above all, it is a vintage that, unlike the very early models, is not yet characterized by wild conversions or idiosyncratic special paintwork.

Plus: Great engine performance with clean response and full power delivery; K5 / K6 types with high-quality equipment package (including titanium silencer, LED rear light, integrated indicators); clear cockpit.

minus: Older types partly with maintenance backlog; Hidden fall marks (e.g. frame damage after use on the racetrack) require expert assessment.

Data (model year 2005): Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 999 cm³, 131 kW (178 hp) at 11,000 rpm, weight 200 kg, load 175 kg, tank capacity 18 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 295 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.0 seconds, consumption 5.3 l / 100 km.

KTM 1190 RC8

Second-hand advice dream motorcycles

fact / Joachim Schahl

KTM 1190 RC8: from 6000 euros.

When it debuted in 2008, the angular RC8 looked like it was from another planet. No wonder, as the builder for this genre came from a completely different planet: That the Austrian off-road forge KTM was able to put a competitive superbike on its wheels straight away, the motorcycle scene was astonishing. Because the bottom line is that the Mattighofen V2 racer implements the company slogan “Ready to Race” just as uncompromisingly as the long-legged sisters. The 1190 is considered a first-class racing motorcycle, but it also has surprisingly good everyday qualities for this type of motorcycle, which are sorely missed (wrist) by the big competitor from Bologna, for example. Nevertheless, the 1190 is and will remain an exotic car on German roads – according to the KBA inventory, there are currently almost 1000 copies on the road in Germany. In the MOTORRAD endurance test, the first series had a rather negative impact due to major damage (connecting rod bearings). Pay attention to the maintenance history!

Plus: Motor pleases with even power delivery and strong torque; handy; stable and precise chassis with very good tuning options; comfortable sitting position.

Minus: Insufficient straight-line stability at top speed; high maintenance costs (workload for inspection work).

Data (model year 2008): Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 1150 cm³, 113.8 kW (155 PS) at 10,000 rpm, weight 201 kg, payload 179 kg, tank capacity 16.5 liters, seat height 820–830 mm, top speed 280 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.0 seconds, consumption 5.5 l / 100 km.

Moto Morini Corsaro 1200

jkuenstle.de

Moto Morini Corsaro 1200: from 4000 euros.

This bike is not a recommendation for rationally calculating used buyers. Because the future of the other traditional brand from Bologna and thus also the question of value-preserving service measures or the supply of spare parts is too uncertain. From an emotional perspective, these concerns can of course be quickly wiped away. After all, no one less than Franco Lambertini, father of the 3½ series, highly praised by Morini fans, drew for the brute, extremely short-stroke engine of the Corsaro responsible. The V-Twin pulls its arms really long, but don’t worry, the fully adjustable chassis brings this burst of force safely back onto the road. Criticisms such as the poor starting behavior, the too rich tuning and the associated high consumption have not improved over the years. Rational tip: Before buying, seek out a dedicated specialist who will take care of this exotic product with passion and expertise.

Plus: Very well made in detail and equipped with high quality components (brakes, exhaust); nicely welded tubular space frame; very accessible adjustment screws for the chassis.

Minus: High fuel consumption; partly badly tuned engine.

Data (model year 2005): Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 1187 cm³, 103 kW (140 PS) at 8500 rpm, weight 220 kg, payload 165 kg, tank capacity 17 liters, seat height 830 mm, top speed 250 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.5 seconds, consumption 7.2 l / 100 km.

BMW R 1100 S BoxerCup replica

jkuenstle.de

BMW R 1100 S BoxerCup replica: from 5000 euros.

The motorcycle comes from a time when BMW was still at war with the sports field. A brand cup, held among other things in the preliminary program of the MotoGP, should strengthen the racing competence of the sports boxer. But the bare numbers speak a different language: 98 hp, 243 kilos … Let’s take the R 1100 S in the Rennerle look for what it is: as a formidable touring athlete who feels just as comfortable in the thicket of bends on the country road as in the more leisurely one Ride with a passenger and plenty of holiday luggage. From 1998 (model year 1999) the R 1100 S was officially part of the BMW range, the boxer cup edition shown here was sold as a limited special series with a total of 2350 copies in 2003 and 2004. With a revised gearbox, a new ignition system and, above all, the double ignition that eliminates the annoying constant speed jerk, this type is considered to be particularly well-engineered. In addition to the sports suspension and 5.5-inch rims, the replica has numerous carbon parts.

Plus: Second-hand offers with very extensive equipment; impressively simple chassis adjustment; very high steering precision; mostly with a checkbook.

Minus: Vibrations in the handlebar ends are annoying on long tours; partly quite high oil consumption (0.5 l / 1000 km).

Data (model year 2003): Air / oil-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke boxer engine, 1085 cm³, 72 kW (98 PS) at 7500 rpm, weight 243 kg, load 207 kg, tank capacity 18 liters, seat height 830 mm, top speed 226 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.7 seconds, consumption 4.4 l / 100 km.

Ducati Monster S4R / RS

jkuenstle.de

Ducati Monster S4R / RS: from 4000 euros.

The monsters from Bologna are now available in many facets: traditionally air-cooled for classic enthusiasts, with small engines from 600 cubic meters and up for beginners or as S4R or RS with brute power. The latter is a case for the connoisseur and connoisseur. He knows that the organ donation is the Testastretta engine from the Superbike 999. And he knows that the RS abbreviation stands for the chassis components from the Swedish specialist Ohlins, which meant that the purchase price rose from 11,995 to 14,756 euros at the time (2005). The difference of almost 3,000 euros has meanwhile been leveled out, and losses have to be accepted when driving, both in the standard version and in the Ohlins dress. Pay attention to the timing belt change!

Plus: Superior engine with great performance characteristics and a wide range of revs; stable brakes; clean and pleasing processing.

Minus: Chassis not harmoniously coordinated (soft front, taut rear); Suspension strut difficult to access.

Data (model year 2006): Water-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 997 cm³, 89 kW (121 PS) at 9500 rpm, weight 206 kg, payload 184 kg, tank capacity 15 liters, seat height 830 mm, top speed 245 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.4 sec, consumption 4.7 l / 100 km.

MV Agusta F4 1000

jkuenstle.de

MV Agusta F4 1000: from 6000 euros.

The 1000 MV, like the 750 sister or the Brutale series, is exactly the type of motorcycle that you go to after work with a glass of beer in the garage to just look and indulge … In comparison, of course, many speak rational Reasons against buying an F4 1000: Japanese superbikes were vastly superior to the Italo section in terms of driveability at the time, and two major damage (to the engine and frame) in the
MOTORRAD tests did not create a solid foundation of trust. Emotionally, however, these facts are quickly off the table. And if you exercise a little prudence when buying, and rightly so: The techno sculptures by the recently deceased designer Massimo Tamburini have the best facilities to gain in value as cult bikes in the hands of knowledgeable collectors. Well-maintained used vehicles that have not been maltreated on the racetrack provide the best basis for this.

Plus: Already as a series bike prepared in many details for serious sport use noble tool kit; very good brakes; Gearbox precise and easy to shift.

Minus: Motor with a bit too rough smoothness makes driving difficult; very large turning circle; high consumption; Mirror with very limited rear view; Adjustment screws difficult to reach.

Data (model year 2004): Water-cooled four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 998 cm³, 122 kW (166 hp) at 11,750 rpm, weight 217 kg, payload 123 kg, tank capacity 21 liters, seat height 820 mm, top speed 301 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.3 seconds, consumption 5.9 l / 100 km.

Triumph Thunderbird Sport

Second-hand advice dream motorcycles

fact / Joachim Schahl

Triumph Thunderbird Sport: from 4000 euros.

Cafe Racer, retro classic …: The Thunderbird Putting sport in a suitable drawer is not that easy. It’s much easier to just like them. Its shape is based on the classic forms of the 1960s, the engine is a classic element of the Neo-Triumph era from Hinckley: a bearish three-cylinder with a rich sound from the 3-in-2 exhaust system. Compared to the standard Thunderbird, this version is rightly called “Sport”. With its fully adjustable and responsive front fork, a taut suspension strut and the double-disc brake system at the front, nothing stands in the way of a more committed country road ride. The chassis impresses with its agility and handiness, the brakes anchor with plenty of vehemence. The officially stated 78 PS indicate British reluctance, in tests the triplet also easily lifted 85 PS on the role. Accordingly, the T-Bird is anything but weak-chested. And for those who are lazy about shifting gears, the 84 Nm maximum torque is already available at 2500 rpm. This Triumph is a motorcycle for all the senses.

Plus: Fully adjustable and stable chassis; powerful motor with great sound; Second-hand offers with an above-average high maintenance condition.

Minus: Seat padded too soft and handlebars too weakly cranked, offering a little too little comfort on long journeys; expensive.

Data (model year 1997): Water-cooled three-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, 885 cm³, 57 kW (78 PS) at 8300 rpm, weight 244 kg, load 157 kg, tank capacity 15 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 199 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 4.3 seconds, consumption 5.1 l / 100 km.

Yamaha MT-01

There is no substitute for displacement. Unless through more displacement. When in 2005 the MT-01 appears, it causes frowns in the German performance society: 90 hp for 267 kilos, not including the driver, can that be enough? It can. Mainly because this unusual motorcycle concept scores with extraordinary values. At a modest 1200 rpm, the fat V-Twin already has a torque of a full 100 Newton meters. The maximum of 150 Nm is already reached at 3750 rpm. How does that feel? Imagine you engage the clutch, turn the gas slightly and a wrecking ball crashes into your rear. This is not a Munchhausen story, this is the full life that an MT-01 offers. The whole thing is somewhat exclusive. The MT-01 with the engine from the Yamaha cruiser Road Star Warrior remained in the range until 2012 and only sold just under 3,500 times. Lover-tended offers at first hand!

Plus: Top processed; above-average maintenance condition; very effective braking system; reliable technology; best investments for a collector’s item with added value.

Minus: Carefully check converted machines (exhaust, rear, handlebars) (entries or reports).

Data (model year 2005): Air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 1670 cm³, 66 kW (90 PS) at 4750 rpm, weight 267 kg, payload 194 kg, tank capacity 15 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 210 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.7 sec, consumption 5.6 l / 100 km.

Harley-Davidson Fat Boy

Second-hand advice dream motorcycles

Harley-Davidson Fat Boy: from 7,000 euros.

A dream bike overview without heavy metal from Milwaukee? That will not do. But which ones take from the diversity: the legendary Sportster series with a high distribution and a good density of offers? The practical, travel-ready Road King, which has proven to be almost indestructible in the MOTORRAD endurance test? A real street bob chopper? We’ll take the bike, which finally made it into the motorcycle olympic as a film star. After all, the real Terminator alias Arnold Schwarzenegger took her place. How far the cinema is from real life, however, becomes clear when looking at the key data of the big block: The first Fat Boy generation officially had to make do with 56 hp, the second was able to call up 64 hp. This makes the Harley anything but a blockbuster in the current power cruiser league. After all, the slightly undersized braking system manages to hit the streets-
to bring the tanker to a standstill again. The dynamics of the Harley move in completely different spheres. Because when you press the start button, time and space start moving. So if there is the dream bike that has become a machine, it is the Fat Boy from Wisconsin / USA.

Plus: Homogeneous power delivery; last gear with overdrive character; minimal depreciation.

Minus: Brake system with very poor efficiency; cumbersome start procedure; Side stand difficult to reach; very high price level.

Data (model year 2003): Air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 1449 cm³, 47 kW (64 PS) at 5400 rpm, weight 326 kg, payload 200 kg, tank capacity 18.9 liters, seat height 645 mm, top speed 173 km / h, acceleration 0– 100 km / h 5.4 seconds, consumption 5.4 l / 100 km.

Moto Guzzi V11 Sport

Moto Guzzi V11 Sport: from 4000 euros.

And our dream tour continues – from Milwaukee now to Mandello on Lake Como. Bikes from this motorcycle manufacturer also kept rolling onto the street, which made the eyes of the beholder look so famous. The very old irons like a Le Mans anyway, but also the new models in a wonderful way preserve the rustic charm that a Guzzi simply has to have. The V11 series appeared in 1999 and produced a multitude of model variants over the years up to 2006: as a classic naked bike, as shown here. Or with a tight handlebar cover as “Sport Ballabio” or “Cafe Sport”. In the Italian tricolor dress with elegant Ohlins chassis as “Coppa Italia”. Or, following on from big names, as “Le Mans” with a classic half-shell. The V-Twin is a poem in all versions: easy-turning, full pressure, well-coordinated injection.

Plus: High entertainment value thanks to the characterful V-engine with a phenomenal sound; stable braking system; clean, easy-care cardan.

minus: Paint problems with some types from model year 2002; Pillion comfort; partly accumulation of transmission problems.

Data (model year 2001): Air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 1064 cm³, 67 kW (91 PS) at 7800 rpm, weight 246 kg, payload 214 kg, tank capacity 22 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 214 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.9 sec, consumption 6.2 l / 100 km.

Buell XB9 / XB12S / R

Second-hand advice dream motorcycles

Gargolov

Buell XB9 / XB12S / R: from 4500 euros.

The guest appearance of the fascinating Buell motorcycles was comparatively short. In 1983, Erik Buell began to put Harley engines more or less by hand in sporty, crisp chassis before Harley-Davidson even in 1998 took over the majority of the company shares. In 2009 the factory stopped building Buell bikes. The most interesting series for collectors: the XB series with aluminum bridge frames from 2002. The combination of modern chassis technology and radical geometry with the original V2 from Harley’s Sportster series scored not only on the dynamic range. Buell went otherwise very unusual ways. The cavities in the aluminum profile frame served as a fuel tank. Depending on the version, they held up to 16.7 liters of fuel. The oil for the dry sump lubrication is stored in the aluminum swing arm. Thanks to the manageable modular system, a large number of models could be realized – three main lines: Firebolt, Lightning and Ulysses in two displacement variants with 984 and 1203 cm³. Connoisseurs use the big engine.

Plus: Fully adjustable chassis with easily accessible spring elements; low-maintenance toothed belt ensures an almost optimal load change behavior; cheap maintenance costs.

Minus: Constant travel jerks in the lower partial load range; relatively unwieldy; Braking stability rather poor.

Data (XB12S, model year 2005): Air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 1203 cm³, 75 kW (101 hp) at 6600 rpm, weight 209 kg, payload 176 kg, tank capacity 14 liters, seat height 810 mm, top speed 217 km / h, acceleration 0-100 km / h 3.9 sec, consumption 4.4 l / 100 km.
