It’s like sliced bread

Sold new over 20,000 times, but the Yamaha YZF-R6 has been new to dealers for some time. Second hand, however, the 600 is like sliced bread. Rightly.

Yamaha YZF-R6

A tragedy: some dealers, probably with their backs against the wall, are offering brand new R6s at prices below ten kilo euros (list price: over 12 500 euros) – and still sit on them. But if you consider that in the previous year only a good 250 units of the 600 series were sold across Germany, the need to sell this motorcycle for the price makes sense, especially since the then newly renovated, 127 hp and ultra-light super sports machine weighing just 190 kilograms was still in 2006 went away in such numbers every month. And in the first two sales years 1999 and 2000, the R6 was a bestseller with almost 3,000 new machines sold.

So why is the star of yore bobbing around like that? Possible answers: 600s are out, 600s are too expensive, 600s can no longer stink against the strong 1000s. There is a tinge of truth in all of these explanations, but the second-hand market shows with the example of the YZF-R6 impressive that things are different.

Wonderful radical play equipment for 5000 euros

Because second-hand 600s are by no means out, especially younger audiences are looking for them (also in a throttled version; by the way, 48 HP kits are available from Alpha Technik, phone 08036/300720, www.alphatechnik.de, for around 100 euros). Used R6s are not offered cheaply, but with a use of around 5000 euros you get a wonderfully radical play device at hand (at least from year of construction 2003) that inspires both sports-loving beginners and old racing foxes. By the way, they cope much better with the lively carelessness of such a machine than with the brute force of a 1000 and are therefore often faster on the road. The now really cheap carburetor models (1999 to 2002) are still in a great mood. No tragedy with the R6 – at least not second-hand.

“If the thick indicators and the serial number plate holder are still on, great!”, Reports a professional buyer. Because then the rest of the machine is probably original. The R6 is usually converted: levers, windshield, exhaust, etc. No problem, as long as the parts come from well-known manufacturers such as Rizoma, Akrapovic or Leovince and have an approval. Since the R6 is also often chased around the circuit, questionable and non-road-compliant race parts are not uncommon – so be careful and look twice.

The so far youngest type in the R6 club has been on the market since 2010.

Most dealers have already checked off the “Carburettor R6” chapter. There is too much junk on the way, according to experts. Among other things, imported second-hand goods from Italy, which although attracting low prices around 2000 euros, are often not very trustworthy.

Interview with Uwe Seitz about the R-6 Cup

Uwe Seitz (43, colleague from the sister magazine “PS”) can be seen on the left in the picture.

the Yamaha R6 Cup is one of the oldest and most popular brand cups in Germany. Up to 40 permanent registrations per year, an international starting field and an exemplary organization within the framework of the IDM. Uwe Seitz (43, left in the picture) from the sister magazine “PS” was a starter himself. He is convinced of the cup and machine and gives interested parties the best tips.

How do you become an R6 Cup driver?
Seitz: By registering, for example at www.yamaha-cup.de, showing a B license from the German Motorsport Federation (DMSB) and purchasing a cup package (a good 17,000 euros for 2013). In addition to an optimally constructed machine, this includes a race kit with all conversion parts, as well as driver equipment, spare parts service, data recording, entry fees, training courses and courses. Incidentally, the winner of a competition bagged 250 euros in prize money.

You can also start with a used machine?
Seitz: No, that is not possible. The race set is only sold to registered drivers through German authorized dealers, and if a driver does not start, he has to make an additional payment for the discounted parts. There are also strict bindings for the tires, so that all drivers use the same rubbers. So the conditions are strict, because the idea is that every year with absolute equal opportunities with each
best material, so with the current R6 is started.

And the other way around: If you want to move a former Cup R6 on the road, what should you watch out for??
Seitz: It is important that all the necessary parts for road approval are included. For the Cup, standard parts such as passenger footrests, indicators and headlights are of course removed, the entire fairing and the seat for racing are clearly different and not street-compliant – and I wouldn’t like to be caught with the roaring race pot.

A used Cup-R6 is also worth it for hobby racers if they only want to take part in racing training occasionally?
Seitz: Sure, a second-hand complete conversion is a convenient solution because all the necessary measures such as secured screws etc. have already been taken and the kit parts are really great. It is important to check how often the cup driver crossed the finish line and how often he landed in the gravel trap. Because a battered Cup-R6 can turn into a dime grave for the amateur racing driver. But there are still good used deals – I think around 10,000 euros for a good bike with all the trimmings is realistic.

Lots of tinkered machines

Low-priced used machines are generally traded heavily by private customers, and there are also a lot of tinkered machines on offer. It is often young beginners with no technical knowledge who fall on the nose with such offers and want to make up for their mistakes by reselling them quickly. So be careful when it says: “Not ready to drive at the moment” or something similar. For decent original specimens of the carburetor version, you should expect from 2500 euros and up.

Injection models from 2003 in a reasonable condition are easier to get hold of – as long as you have at least 3,500 euros in your pocket and can live with higher mileage of around 30,000 kilometers. Flawless, first-hand machines with less than 15,000 kilometers start at 4,500 euros. There is very strong demand for the type RJ111 (from 2006), which is good to get hold of from 5500 euros. However, there are also very opulent price claims of over 8,000 euros, in some cases for machines that are more than five years old. Often a little overpriced, especially since new machines are sold for less than 10,000 euros because the 600 new vehicle market is currently idle. R6s less than three years old are poorly in stock and are therefore rarely available as used machines.

Availability on the market: very high

Be careful with foreign used imports

Other problem cases: foreign used imports. In the case of cheap offers – often completely destroyed hobby racing equipment – there are often hidden defects such as cracks in the frame, sometimes even essential parts such as the alternator are missing. So check the origin in the papers, if in doubt, better hands off! Overall, however, the 600 series is considered to be very solid – tested used vehicles from reputable dealers usually give no cause for concern.
