When it is deadly heat, in the urban jungle and when we are sneaking out, we sometimes wear a more casual outfit. But when it matters, we only use one-piece leather. It makes you feel good and protects your bones better than any other motorcycle clothing in the event of an impact. But what exactly is important? Which station wagon can convince? Which less? And why?

Great 3D lining with button placket for the in-house back protector.

Great leather suit with a very neat fit for off-the-shelf goods. Like the other Italian women made of cowhide, Atem also pampers you with real feel-good leather. In addition, the high-quality 3D lining ensures first-class circulation. However, the lining is a bit sloppy attached with Velcro. A back protector is missing, the residual strength values are only average.

Top: neatly embedded caps.

The Laguna Seca P. Estiva leaves a mixed picture. On the plus side, there is a great leather, the good fit and a very solid workmanship. The weak point traditionally consists of the protectors. Too small on shoulders and elbows, and the residual strength values are the highest in the test field. It’s a shame, because Dainese enjoys an international reputation, not least because of his involvement in MotoGP.

Instead of proper hip protectors, there is only foam.

Thanks to bespoke manufacture, it has an excellent fit, with only the calves being a bit tight. The women are the only leather suit that does not offer hip protectors. On the other hand, the residual force values of the other elements are the best in the test – respect! The non-breathable, self-absorbing and carelessly attached inner lining does not do the suit justice. Slight weaknesses in workmanship and features.

100 percent kangaroo is only available from Gimoto.

Like women, Gimoto only offers made-to-measure products. The fit is perfect except for the thighs that are a little too wide. However, the knee protectors are a bit loose and can turn away in an emergency. The residual force values correspond to the average. The bottom line is that the Racer-R is a very neat leather one-piece and comes in second. At just over 1500 euros, the most expensive in the test.

Stabilizes the seat of the knee protector: leather strips against stretch (arrow).

Best protector equipment, great residual strength values: In terms of passive safety, the Slade is unbeatable in this test field and gets almost the full number of points. The leather suit revealed slight weaknesses in the fit, with which the testers got along differently – best try it out yourself or have it made to measure. Decent workmanship, good equipment, test victory!

The hard shell protectors lined with foam are great.

There is no back protector, but the rest of the elements are complete and of sufficient size. The residual force values are also okay with the Revit Replica One Piece. The cut was generally quite wide, and the leather one-piece offers little legroom. The manufacturer was certain that the inexpensive station wagon would do better than some of its more expensive colleagues. He should be right, 5th place.

Make an impression: interchangeable elbow sliders.

Protectors that are too small on the shoulders and elbows and a shoulder protector that is a little too far back throw the Spidi Replica Piloti Wind Pro back. The residual strength values are average. A no-go with the otherwise very acceptable fit are the tight forearms. When the zippers are closed, they press uncomfortably. Legroom is also minimally restricted. On the plus side are the fabulous leather and top workmanship.

It is best to check the leather suit in the riding position on the bike: does it offer sufficient freedom of movement? Does it wrinkle? Aren’t your arms and legs too long? Are there protectors at all critical points (shoulder, elbow, hip, back, rump and knee)? Do joint protectors enclose elbows and knees completely and cannot be turned away? Does the back protector extend to the rump? One-pieces that initially fit a little too tightly widen.

Evaluation and judgment

Seven motorcycle leather one-pieces in the test

mps photo studio

Rating of the leather one-piece.

* The number, size and fit were assessed. Missing protectors: 4 points deduction per part of the body; incorrectly fitting protectors: 2 points deduction per part of the body; Protectors that are too small: 2 points deduction per part of the body ** Leather, stretch, inner pockets, neoprene inlays (“material”), as well as caps, back humps, perforations and areas of leather lined with foam (“equipment)” *** 85 – 80 points = very good, 79-75 points = very good to good, 74-70 points = good, 69-65 points = good to satisfactory, 64-60 points = satisfactory, 59-55 points = satisfactory to sufficient, 54-50 points = sufficient, 49 – 45 points = sufficient to unsatisfactory, 44 – 40 points = unsatisfactory, 39 – 35 points = unsatisfactory to unsatisfactory, below 35 points = unsatisfactory

verdict

One of the cheapest one-piece leather suits makes the race: The Held Slade shines with excellent protective properties and nowhere is a real weakness. With a few points difference, Gimoto and Alpinestars follow. Both combinations do very well, but are significantly higher in price. The Gimoto shines with customization, the Alpinestars counters with slightly better equipment. The skins of Damen and Revit occupy midfield. Advantage women: Made to measure, best residual strength values. Dainese, and especially Spidi, are a little beaten. Both shoulder and elbow protectors are too small, and the Dainese’s residual strength values are poor. The Spidi’s sleeves were much too tight.

Protector test

Seven motorcycle leather one-pieces in the test

mps photo studio

Test stand for the impact test

The photo makes it clear that we tested the protectors on the test bench this time, including the leather above and any caps. Reason: These elements provide additional protection in the event of a fall. We carried out the impact test at 23 degrees room temperature at the Swabian company SAS-TEC. We loaded the corresponding places with an impact energy of 50 joules, which corresponds to a fall height of 1.02 meters with a weight of 5 kilograms. We also took a close look at the size of the protectors, the quality of the materials, the general workmanship and the features. We tested fit and comfort during dry runs in the editorial office and during many fast laps on a race training course in Hockenheim. The organizer Ducati 4U provided us with a place for this at short notice. At this point, a big thank you to everyone who participated in this test.

Seven motorcycle leather one-pieces in the test

mps photo studio

We determined the residual force values of the protectors.

* Residual force values in kN (kilonewtons) ** The residual force values were added and then divided by the number of protectors tested. Below 7 kN = 20 points, 7.0 to 7.99 kN = 19 points, 8.0 to 8.99 kN = 18 points, 9.0 to 9.99 kN = 17 points, 10.0 to 10.99 kN = 16 points, 11.0 to 11.99 kN = 15 points, 12.0 to 12.99 kN = 14 points, 13.0 to 13.99 kN = 13 points, 14.0 to 14.99 kN = 12 points, 15.0 to 15.99 kN = 11 points, 16.0 to 16.99 kN = 10 points, 17.0 to 17.99 kN = 9 points, 18.0 to 18.99 kN = 8 points , 19.0 to 19.99 kN = 7 points, etc..

Leather one-piece between 1000 and 1500

Seven one-piece leather suits in the price range between 1000 and 1500 euros compete in this test. This puts them between the cheap products and the absolute upper class, for which a few more hundreds are due. If you use an airbag station wagon, you are only involved if you are three grand or more. In addition to the established brands (Alpinestars, Dainese, Held, Revit, Spidi), this time with Gimoto and Damen, two lesser-known manufacturers also sent their products into the race. The former is based in Italy, the latter in the Netherlands.

Advantage Gimoto: The southerners work in Germany with a base dealer, so short distances are guaranteed. Damen, on the other hand, only sells its goods from Holland, which, however, went very well in this test. All candidates have to prove themselves in five categories, which we describe in more detail in the individual sections.

Fit, cut and comfort

Ironically, the two exotic products offer customization as standard. Gimoto takes measurements in its branch in Trier or, alternatively, sends instructions for self-measurement including a form to the customer. Damen misses its customers in Assen and Breda (both NL). If you live too far away, you enter the dimensions yourself in a prefabricated data sheet, as with Gimoto. We tried that with both brands, and the leather suits fit perfectly except for the little things. More information and all relevant data can be found with the respective products.

The cheaper leather one-pieces from Dainese, Held and Spidi offer custom-made items for an extra charge. Because of the short lead time and the summer vacation at the time of the test, these manufacturers were understandably only able to deliver off-the-shelf goods (size 52). The suits from Alpinestars and Revit are not available as a tailor-made combination for money or good words. We also take them to our breasts in size 52.

Bar goods require a willingness to compromise

In principle, off-the-shelf goods require a willingness to compromise. Most of the leather suits are cut so that they fit as many customers as possible. The author (1.76 meters, 72 kilos) liked the “Atem” from Alpinestars and the “Laguna Seca P. Estiva” from Dainese. Except for a little too wide upper arms and thighs as well as airy buttocks (Alpinestars) and the Dainese who wrinkles on the knee protectors, the one-pieces fit perfectly. The longer co-tester (1.82 meters, 78 kilos), on the other hand, is particularly well-suited to the “Replica One Piece” from Revit. However, the leather for hanging-off offers comparatively little legroom and is otherwise cut quite wide.

The Spidi (“Replica Piloti Wind Pro”) is at least tighter on the upper body, but is a bit short on the forearms and, above all, too tight. When the zips are closed, the arms hurt after a short time – an absolute no-go! In addition, the Italian doesn’t quite offer the legroom of the best.

What does this chapter tell us at the end? One-piece leather suits with different cuts and individual body proportions often impair the optimal fit of bar goods. If you don’t want to do without the proverbial second skin, there is no avoiding a made-to-measure leather suit. What you should generally pay attention to when buying, is in the purchase advice.

Seat and dimensions of the protectors

It is up to them in the worst-case scenario. Protectors absorb the energy in the event of an impact, which ideally keeps the bones intact. We therefore award almost half of the maximum points that can be achieved for this criterion. What is important? On the one hand, the completeness: Are there protectors in the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, back and rump? Except for the “Slade” from Held, which is exemplary in this regard, none of them offer solid all-round protection. All other manufacturers do without a back protector in their products and charge this important element extra – incomprehensible in this price range. In addition, the ladies “Racing Suit D2” is the only one that does not offer hip protectors. We punish missing protectors with a point deduction.

In addition to the number of protectors, their fit and size are also decisive. Dainese and Spidi process elements that are too small on the shoulders and elbows, which also costs meters. The good news: With all other leather suits and body parts, the fit and size are exemplary. Exceptions are the Spidi, whose shoulder protectors are a little too far back. And with the Gimoto, the knee protectors can twist in extreme cases.

Protectors in the impact test

As usual, we also subject the protectors to an impact test. Deviating from the standard for joint protectors (EN 1621-1: 2012), we leave the elements in the leather suit and check them including the leather layer above and any additional cover caps, the so-called caps. Reason: In the event of a fall, the pilot also lands on these additional layers. The blow on the caps runs in the middle, so with maximum protection. Since every fall is different, the residual force values can be higher in an emergency. The test bench attests that the station wagons have significantly lower values compared to earlier tests, which is positive. Nevertheless, there are still major differences between the individual manufacturers. The hero Slade emerged from the protectors chapter as the clear front runner.

Material and equipment

In the category “Material and equipment” we paid attention to the quality of the processed materials such as leather, inner lining, stretch inserts and neoprene (example: cuffs). We also checked the equipment of the one-piece: inside pockets, caps, back humps, perforations, foam elements incorporated under the leather. Why foam? Because softly lined leather withstands slipping on asphalt longer than leather that is not lined. We also paid attention to other details. So the front zipper of the hero could be a little longer, which would make the small business on the Pipibox easier. Great, on the other hand: the Velcro inlays on the knee pads have practical loops, which greatly simplifies changing them. The Laguna Seca by Dainese also offers a special treat. Additional zippers on the calves allow the pilot to use the station wagon like Rossi & Co. can also be worn over boots – cool! The downside: If you fall, you run the risk of getting caught.

All manufacturers shine when it comes to leather. High-quality material in sufficient strength and a high quality impression ennoble the test subjects. The hides of Alpinestars, Dainese and Spidi appear particularly supple and pleasant. Apparently, Italian cattle feel particularly comfortable in their skin. In addition, real geniuses apparently give the leather its ultimate perfection in the tanneries.

Gimoto is the only one in the test to use only kangaroo leather. As it is particularly hard-wearing, the “Racer-R” only needs 0.9 millimeters of leather. The competition mainly works with cowhide and thicknesses between 1.1 and 1.3 millimeters. There are no downward outliers in this chapter. Only the Racing Suit D2 (women) has some feathers, mainly because of its non-breathable, absorbent inner lining. And the Spidi has comparatively few leather passages underlaid with foam. We remember: Underlaid leather is more abrasion-resistant. The Italian’s inner pocket is also noticeable without any closure. If you are not careful, you will quickly lose your cell phone, keys or wallet. The competition is clearly doing better. The queen of the inside pockets is the breath of Alpinestars. It has two pockets, one is even waterproof.

Processing of the leather one-piece

To the chapter “processing” include the quality of the seams, the dimensions of the zippers and the overall impression of the leather one-piece. Here, too, nobody fails, on the contrary. All one-pieces are processed very neatly. Only the women’s sleeve zips are out of the ordinary: How long do the puny zippers last? In the case of the Revit, the Velcro at the bottom of the leg was also a bit short, large-area overlapping nil. And with the Slade by Held, the knee caps are a little too high, those on the shoulder a touch too far back. We really like the leather insert between the knee protector and the stretch. The narrow band stabilizes the seat of the protector and guarantees its bomb-proof hold. The Dainese caps integrated into the leather are also wonderful. Slip pads cannot harm the seamless system. Also commendable: the foam-lined Revit caps. As a result, the edges do not press so hard on the leather and the parts of the body below during a take-off.

Weight of the one-piece leather suits

For some stokers, every gram counts, true to the motto: When the bike and station wagon are nice and light, I don’t have to lose any weight myself. Two arguments pulverize this attitude: 1.) Those who like to drive a lot and need a certain level of fitness. And that’s only available up to a certain ratio of body size to body mass. 2.) At 4.9 kilos (the lightest: Gimoto and Spidi) and 5.8 kilos (the heaviest: Held), our test combinations are barely a kilo apart. If you only pay attention to weight when buying a leather one-piece, you do the bill without the landlord. Because only a good overall package dresses the connoisseur. With or without a departure.
